Title:

Post-occupancy evaluation of undergraduate hostel facilities in UiTM Shah Alam

Overview of the title:

Hostels are one of the facilities that accommodate students in UiTM, it is necessary to have the best facilities management. This is important to gives a conducive environment to the students. The physical environment of universities should be catered for, since academic productivity to large extent depends on the available facilities and supporting services. The state of the physical assets of higher institutions is an indicator of strategic facilities management.

POE as defined by Baird (2001) is “a generic term for various general programs, procedures and specific techniques for the assessment of existing buildings and facilities’. POE assesses how well buildings match users’ needs and identifies ways to improve building design, performance and fitness for purpose. It involves the systematic evaluation of opinion about buildings in use, from the viewpoint of the people who use them.

Globally, many POE studies have been conducted, with a large number of benefits gained. Previous studies on POEs on university buildings in general have shown that POEs should be an integral part of any construction or remodeling project (Horgen and Sheridan, 1996). Studies specifically on student hostel buildings in Saudi Arabia include that carried out by Hassanain (2007) using an indicative assessment of the existing indoor environmental qualities (i.e. thermal, acoustic, visual comfort and indoor air quality) at the campus of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Past maintenance work orders for the building evaluated in this study were analyzed to identify frequent and major areas of complaint and discomfort for the occupants. A user satisfaction survey was developed to obtain the students’ qualitative feedback on their experience with the designed indoor environment. The study found that the student residents were satisfied with the five main performance categories identified (see also Hassanain, 2008).

Aim:

To study the post-occupancy evaluation of undergraduate hostel facilities in UiTM Shah Alam.

Objectives:

The objectives of this study are:

1. To identify the undergraduate hostel facilities provided in UiTM Shah Alam.2. To study the undergraduate hostel facilities management in UiTM Shah Alam.3. To investigate the issues arise in the maintenance of the undergraduate hostel facilities.4. To analysis the post-occupancy evaluation of undergraduate hostel facilities in UiTM Shah Alam.

Problem statement:

Little research has been done on POE in Nigeria, especially with reference to hostels for postgraduate students. This is so despite the fact that many public institutions now adopt FM and student hostels are particularly problematic and often a cause for unrest. The study evaluated the performance of a new postgraduate hostel building as a step towards enhancing functionality and environmental friendliness (Adewunmi et al., 2009).

Students are the users of the hostels. The issue is whether they are comfortable or uncomfortable with hostel facilities provided to them. There are a few problems in the facilities of the hostels that is mainly plumbing. The tap for the basin leaks for a few times and have to wait for the plumber for a long time. The public washer machine always broke down and always need for maintenance. In addition, it was observed that there is no ramp or entrance for physically challenged students. This should have been considered in the design of the building and should be taken care of. Furthermore, there are problems in terms of fire safety in a few hostels that is the sprinkler and smoke detector was not present.

Besides, this research will also investigate the difference in the satisfaction levels of students living in hostels within the campus and those living in hostels outside the campus. Satisfaction with fees, distance from university facilities, room safety, room size, hostel security, and hostel facilities are the most important factors which predict undergraduate students’ satisfaction with their hostel.

Their perception towards hostel facilities is necessary as this can help in the improvement in the hostel facilities and management.

Scope of the study:

The study will be on post-occupancy evaluation of undergraduate hostel facilities in UiTM Shah Alam.

Methodology:

Primary data

Interview

1. The survey and subsequent interviews are intended to obtain information from the facilities department. The interview is mainly on facilities provided in UiTM Shah Alam hostel and the hostel facilities management in UiTM Shah Alam.

Questionnaire

2. The survey is through self-administered questionnaires in which users of the building were asked to report on their perceptions and experience of the hostel facility.

Secondary data

Literature review

The data were obtained from the literature review based on books, articles, journals and internet sources to know all about facilities management.

Tentative chapter headings:

Chapter 1: introduction

This chapter one provides background information. This chapter also elaborates on the problem statement. It further highlights on the aims and objectives of the study as well as a brief on the research methods and the scope of the study.

Chapter 2: literature review

The second chapter reviews on definition of the facilities management.

Chapter 3: research methodology

This chapter provides information about the methods and procedure used to achieve the objective. This chapter provides background information of research methodologies and justification for the research method implemented for this research.

Chapter 4: analysis and findings

This chapter presents the data collected from the literature review of previous studies and the findings from the interviews.

Chapter 5: conclusions and recommendations

This is the conclusion chapter of the dissertation. It provides summary of the major findings and make recommendations to the facilities and facilities management for UiTM Shah Alam hostel.
