The adjective vociferous (vo-SIFF-er-uss) contains the stem voc, voice, and ous, full of. From the Latin vociferari. Vociferous refers to shouting that is so loud it is deafening. A clamor can be vociferous, but in a clamor, people tend to be insisting on something, whereas in being vociferous, they may not be. In Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage, we read that “Loud and vociferous congratulations were showered upon the maiden.”
