In the fertile valleys at the base of the Cascade Mountains in Northwest USA there are expansive fields of lush green mint. The rich volcanic soil and pure glacial water provide the ideal climatic conditions for prolific plant growth and Cascade Pacific Essential Oils has established itself as a leading producer of top quality peppermint essential oil in the region.

Sydney Essential Oil Co. is proud to represent them as a key distribution partner in Australia, New Zealand and Asian regions.

Peppermint OriginsWith its clean, menthol scent and sweet, fresh flavour, Mentha piperita has been a prevalent plant species throughout history.

The botanical name is said to have derived from Greek mythology, where “Minthe” was a beautiful nymph and the love interest of the god Hades. She was turned into a plant by jealous Queen Persephone, whereby Hades gave her a sweet scent so that she would be appreciated by man. It is this plant that was accordingly given the name Mentha.

Originating in the Mediterranean, the widespread popularity of the plant has seen it used in a multitude of applications. Egyptians utilised peppermint to soothe upset stomachs, nausea and other digestive complaints. During the Middle Ages it was a popular herbal remedy for polishing teeth. It was also used by cheese makers to deter rodents from taking up residence in storerooms. By the early 1700’s it was listed in the London Pharmacopoeia and was used to treat all manner of ailments including sores, colds and headaches. As demand increased, cultivation of the plant grew significantly.

The introduction of the species to North America by European settlers saw it being grown commercially by the end on the 1700’s. Today Peppermint has become a strong commodity for the country.

Cascade Pacific Essential Oils The Cascade Mountains extend across Washington and Oregon in the Pacific Northwest. The major mountain range is renowned >

Clockwise from top: Peppermint is rotated with crops such as potatoes, onions, sweet corn, carrots, wheat and barley to maintain excellent soil health and naturally repel pests. Deposited in rows, after being cut, the peppermint hay is ready to be steam distilled. The Cascade Pacific Essential Oils facility houses some of the largest distillation units in the world. Stored in a climate-controlled warehouse, Peppermint Yakima oil is available with stable supply and consistent pricing. Unique irrigation systems deliver just the right amount of nutrients to the plants whilst minimising carbon emissions.

for offering highly fertile valleys in which agriculture thrives, and it is in this region that we find the home of Cascade Pacific Essential Oils.

Cascade Pacific Essential Oils has grown to become one of the highest quality producers of Peppermint Yakima essential oil and employs many technologically advanced practices in order to achieve a sustainable business model.

Recognition of the region’s excellent growing capabilities has ensured success and provides the company with the ability to produce outstanding supply consistency whilst also maintaining areas in which native wildlife can still flourish.

Peppermint Farming & Oil ProductionPeppermint is a perennial plant that produces no seed. It is planted in rows with state-certified, disease-free root stock or underground runners from existing plants. These plants take approximately two years to reach their full maturity and form a solid peppermint meadow. The species requires an adequate water supply in order to grow, along with the right amount of sunlight and in this particularly well irrigated region, peppermint has found the perfect growing environment.

Glacial water from the Cascade Mountains is utilised in a modern, efficient irrigation system that delivers the perfect amount of water and crop nutrients to the plantations. The system ensures water conservation is a primary focus and effectively manages the precious resource. Cascade Pacific Essential Oils also employs a state of the art global positioning system that guides tractors to decrease fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

Their integrated pest management program is a sensitive approach to pest and disease control and ensures the impact on the environment is minimal. Rotation with crops that naturally repel harmful pests, planting pest and disease-free root stock and using natural predators to reduce pest populations all combine to result in a sustainable prevention program. >

Clockwise from top: Environmental conditions are excellent for farming. Mineral rich volcanic soil and consistent water supply ensure continued agricultural success. The sweet, vibrant

aroma is popular in many industries such as dental care, confectionary, pharmaceutical and cosmetics. The bright green leaves and lateral branches are mechanically harvested

from July through to September. The state of the art laboratory ensures the quality of their essential oil is maintained at the highest levels.

harvest

10

The mechanical harvesting season runs from July through to the end of September and in this time there are 3 separate harvests. The initial double cut occurs in July, there is a secondary single cut in August, and in September the final double cut takes place.

The harvested leaves and lateral branches are collected and processed through the advanced distillation facility. There are several steam boilers in which the peppermint “hay” is distilled with Cascade Mountains water to produce the exceptionally high quality essential oil.

Popular Peppermint ApplicationsToday, Peppermint oil is an extremely popular ingredient in many different industries, from oral or dental care to confectionary, cosmetic and personal care, fragrance and flavours and even pharmaceutical products, there is an ever-present demand for the oil.

In cosmetic applications, peppermint is an excellent cooling ingredient. It helps relieve the itch and sting of sunburn and can help reduce redness or inflammation. It is also effective as a cleansing oil as it can assist in removing blackheads whilst softening the skin.

In haircare it balances oily hair conditions and soothes the scalp. It also offers capillary constriction properties that are useful in after shave products.

Massage oil blends also enjoy extra benefits when they include peppermint, especially for feet, as the oil can offer relief from muscular aches and pain, and help eliminate odour.

Aromatherapeutically it is recognised for its ability to relax the digestive system. Many ailments such as nausea, constipation and even flatulence can be alleviated through the use of peppermint. It is also a common choice for natural remedies that help relieve headaches as the cooling action is said to ease tension from the mind. 1

Peppermint Yakima oil is ideal for use in gel cleansing products as it purifies the skin and helps remove congestion.

When it comes to formulation development, it is important to find an ingredient that differentiates your product from your competitors. The introduction of CO2 extracts to the Sydney Essential Oil Co. product portfolio allows you to select one of these highly active oils to enhance your finished product and to amplify your cosmetic results.

What is CO2 Extraction?Carbon dioxide extraction is a gentle, non-toxic process that leaves no solvent residue and allows for high levels of the naturally occurring bioactive constituents to remain intact within the resulting oil. The extraction process involves accurately controlled pressure to ensure the carbon dioxide maintains a supercritical state. As the supercritical carbon dioxide exhibits both liquid and gaseous properties it effectively penetrates the plant material to produce a pure extract rich in natural elements. The temperature during this process does not exceed 40°C. This means the oil retains all the natural waxes and resins that would otherwise be molecularly altered through other methods such as steam distillation. >

(BuLgaria) – rOse harvest 2013

This year’s Bulgarian rose harvest was

significantly shorter than expected.

There was an unusual occurrence

where all flowers from the different

growing regions blossomed at the same

time. Rather than a succession of harvests

starting in the Plovdiv region following

through to Karlovo and the Kazanlak

regions, all 3 areas were in bloom at once.

This has been attributed to the warmer

weather experienced at the end of April

and throughout all of May.

There was also little to no rain through

the harvest season and this impacted the

amount of oil retained in the petals and

subsequently has led to lower production

yields. If you need to secure supply, please

contact us with your forward orders to

ensure sufficient material is reserved.

– MaCaDaMia harvest 2013

In January the initial forecast for the

2013 Macadamia harvest was looking

good as the Serendip Organics orchards

were supporting a bumper crop.

Unfortunately by February devastating

weather conditions hit the major

Macadamia growing region of Australia.

Floods, storms, tropical cyclones and

tornadoes were extremely destructive

throughout Serendip Organics plantations.

This has caused a supply shortage of

Macadamia oil that will be felt across the

market until the 2014 harvest begins.

If you need to secure supply, please

contact us with your forward orders to

ensure sufficient material is reserved.

– LiMe harvest 2013

During the months of July and August,

the lime growing region of Colima

Mexico has experienced much cooler

weather than normal and this delayed

the ripening of the Citrus aurantifolia

fruit, and subsequent picking and

processing. Whilst the season is

now underway, new season’s oil will

be available a little later than usual.
