A fire that claimed the lives of two hasleft three children orphaned and an-other twowithout a home of their own.

The Fredericks family has lost everythingin a blaze that engulfed their family homeon Sunday 12 July.Simone Fredericks was at home when the

fire started.She explains that everything happened

very quickly.

“Webraaied for lunch andmade potjiekos.I rememberat 17:00 Iwas sweeping thekitch-en and then went to the room. A short whilelater I heard the electricity box trip andwentto see what happened. That is when I sawthe black smoke coming from the frontroom,” she says.The 25-year-old then rushed to get the

1-year-old and 5-year-old children out of thehouse.She then returned to get her mother out

of the house.The mother, Elizabeth, says she had in-

haled smoke and was rushed to hospital.Her son, Ricardo (38), and his girlfriend,

Chantelle Lucas (39), were trapped insidethe house.Neighbours grabbed their hosepipes and

tried to extinguish the blaze and assist thecouple, but they were too late.“There was nothing anyone could do for

them because the fire was burning too hot,”Simone says.She says the rescue services were quick

to respond to their call but the fire had al-ready spread through the ceiling, destroying

all their belongings.The fire had reportedly started in the front

room where the couple had been sleeping.Police confirm that an inquest docket has

been opened for investigation. The cause ofthe fire has not yet been determined.The couple’s two children, their aunt and

grandmother did not sustain any injuries.The couple’s eldest daughter was not at

the home when the blaze started.“Everything happened so quickly,” Simo-

They are staying with Elizabeth’s sisterCathlin Fransman while the children are inthe care of their aunt until the home can berepaired.

Thereafter Elizabeth says she will requestcustody of the children.

The City of Cape Town has been notifiedof the blaze. Work to rebuild the home willsoon begin.

The family is still in need of basics suchas baby formula, beds, furniture, applian-ces, nappies and other necessities to get backon their feet.

The family has also asked for assistancein sending the 10-year-old child back toschool with a school uniform and stationery.

The little girl is at Merrydale Primary

School.All goods new and second hand are wel-

Family fears thatthey will be nextSAMANTHA LEE

He is only 10 years old and he fears forhis life after the brutal killing of his

father and two other men.“I don’t want him to get bail. If he gets

out, he will kill me,” he tells People’sPost.

He says this of the man accused of kill-ing three of his family members on 12February.

Houwa Abdi, the widow of one of thevictims, says theman accused of murderis well-known to the family.

“We don’t want him to get bail,” shesays with the help of a translator.

She explains that the man currentlybehind bars was arrested on the sameday as the murders took place.

Muhamud Abdi Gorane, a familymember, explains the events.

“Here is where he was killed,” hepoints out the window.

He explains that the accused shot theonemanand thenwalkedaround the cor-ner where he shot the other two.

They all died at the scene and the man

was arrested.The police investigation is continuing.

The motive is unknown at this stage.“I feel like he is targeting our family

but I don’t know why. He killed my hus-band and two other family members andI fear we will be next,” she says.

Another family member says that themanwas heard by 11 other people sayingthat he would kill the rest of the family.

“We want him to sit in jail for 20 to 25years for what he has done,” she says.

The family now anxiously await thehearing.

The family has already collected signa-tures from the local Somalian communi-ty to present to the court but they arenow calling on the support of the broadercommunity.

Jasmine Harris of the Town Centresubforum says she will help in facilitat-ing the petition process and will havethem at her shop (Jasmine’s Takeaways)in Town Centre.

The accused is expected to appear incourt on Wednesday next week for hisbail hearing. The family hopes to presentthe signed petitions on that day.

Cops dismissed for briberySAMANTHA LEE

Two Mitchell’s Plain police station officershave been dismissed following a disciplina-ry hearing on corruption charges.

The two constables were arrested at thestation in February and have been on sus-pension until their dismissal now. Theyhave also appeared in court on charges ofcorruption and bribery (“Corrupt cops sus-pended”, People’s Post, 10 March).

According to a source close to the investi-gation, it all started when a warrant officerat Lentegeur police station received astrange call from a suspect who was at theback of a police van.

The officer who arrested the corrupt po-licemen confirms this.

“A suspect calledme and explained the sit-uation. He was left at the back of the vanwith his cellphone and was told to call his‘people’ for money,” he says.

According to the officer, the constableshadasked the suspect howmuchhewaswill-ing to pay for his release.

According to the suspect, the two officershad searched his home following a tip-offthat drugs were being kept on the premises.

He was not home at the time and drugswere foundburied in the garden of theman’sBitou Street home.

The man’s wife called him to come home,where the two constables arrested him.

The warrant officer says when the man

was meant to call his “people” for briberymoney he called Lentegeur police station in-stead.

“I tried to stall them and get a Section 252clearance, but I was too late. They took theman home and he offered them R500, whichthey refused. He then offered them R1000,which they accepted. Because I did not getthe 252 in time, the man paid them from hisown money,” the source says.

A “Section 252” is a warrant to perform anundercover operation.

When the man returned home he phonedthe officer, stating he had paid the two con-stables in R20 and R10 notes.

When the warrant officer went to checkthe log it was found that the drugs had beenhanded in and signed by one of the officers.

The two were called in as they were aboutto leave the station. When asked to emptytheir pockets, a roll of R10 and R20 notes wasfound on one of the officers.

The officers, aged 29 and 33, have sincebeen dismissed from the police.

Major-general Abraham Goss says the in-ternal disciplinary hearing is complete, butthe criminal case is still under investiga-tion. “Wewant this to serveas a strongwarn-ing to the other officers, that corruptionwillnot be tolerated,” he says.

Two Sentinel St homes raided for drugs, ammunition

The police in Mitchell’s Plain are keepinga stern approach to drugs and gangsterismin the area, leading to several arrests.Police spokesperson Sergeant Jerome

Voegt says the success is only achievedthrough a good relationship with the com-munity.On Wednesday 15 July at 20:15 the Mitch-

ell’s Plain crime prevention unit searcheda house in Sentinel Street, Tafelsig after re-ceiving information that drugs were storedat the house. During the search the officersfound a large quantity of drugs hidden in-side the house.These consisted of 42 dagga stoppe, 42

mandrax tablets, 80mandraxhalf tablets, 98

small packets of tik, 2 scales and R1824 incash.Two suspects, aged 31 and 50 years, were

arrested and have appeared in court on re-lated charges.Police officers also received a tip-off on

Friday last week. They followed up on theinformation that ammunition was beingstored at a wendy house in Sentinel Street,Tafelsig.They searched the wendy house and

found 36 live 9mm rounds of ammunitionhidden inside.A 29-year-old manwas arrested for illegal

possession of ammunition and has ap-peared in court on related charges.

Voegt says the accident took place inSpine Road on Thursday at about 21:30.“The 56-year-old woman was crossing

Portland High School pupilswalked in to a cleaner school

when the new school term startedyesterday after a Mandela Dayproject saw 19 classrooms repaint-ed.The paintwork was organised by

local councillor Eddie Andrewsand his youth mentorship pro-gramme participants.These Decisions Affect Destinies

(DAD) ambassadors, a few parents,staff members and pupils of theschool, as well as the First West-ridgeScouts and representatives of

the City of Cape Town nature con-servation department, all lent ahand to the Mandela Day initia-tive.The DAD ambassadors also pre-

pared a short presentation onwhatformer president Nelson Mandelameant to them.The 19 classrooms had their

walls painted and floors swept.Andrews also vowed that this

would not be the end of their in-volvement with the school. He saidthe ambassadors had identifiedseveral other matters that neededattention.Theywoulddedicate twodays of the school holidays inOcto-ber to address these.

The provincial government wants tohonour the legacy of former presidentNelsonMandela bydeveloping a tourismroute which traces his journey in theprovince.Alan Winde, provincial minister of

economic opportunities, says it is part ofa series of heritage tourism proposals toboost the province’s growth.The proposal comes from South Afri-

can Tourism’s mobile app, which isbased on a map of Madiba-inspired tour-ism attractions.“Themapwas launched last year to en-

courage local and international touriststo walk in the footsteps of Madiba. Wehope these initiatives will offer an au-thentic experience to visitors, allowingthem to experience a piece of the West-ern Cape’s rich cultural heritage,” hesays.The proposal is to develop signage for

the Madiba route, which will highlightculturally significant sites in the prov-ince, Winde explains.“It is our goal to develop clear signage

for the Madiba route so tourists are ableto easily navigate to the different sites.We will work with local and nationaltourism authorities to market the route.At this stage this is a proposal, and wewill engage the relevant stakeholders.Collaboration with key roleplayers iskey to ensure the project’s success,” hesays.The proposedMandela journey will be

made up of Robben Island, Pollsmoorprison, Drakenstein correctional servi-ces, City Hall and Parliament.Theproposalwill be included in the ac-

tion plan aimed at growing the tourismindustry. It will be submitted for approv-al next month.“We can increase the economic contri-

bution of the tourism sector by up toR28bn from R17bn. It could add up to100 000 formal jobs. Currently, 204 000residents are formally employed in thetourism sector. To achieve these goals,the private and public sector have to col-laborate and jointly invest in a set of fo-cused, specific projects.”

Officers from the Mitchell’s Plain policestation were on a routine crime preventionpatrol in Westridge, says police spokesper-son Sergeant Jerome Voegt, when they sawthe teenager looking “suspicious”.

“On Monday 13 July at 13:00 the officerswere executing a routine vehicle patrol onthe corner of De Duin and Silvermynstreets when they noticed a suspicious-looking person standing on the street cor-ner. Officers then managed to apprehendthe suspect as he was walking down thestreet and they found in his possession a9mm pistol and ammunition,” he says.

A lot went into seeing the resi-dents of the Beaconvale Frail

Care Centre smile in a two-day cel-ebration this past weekend.Sponsors from all over the Cape

came on board to bring some joy tothe residents as part of MandelaDay celebrations on both Fridayand Saturday.Sponsors included the SA Navy,

Prasa, Jet Mart Town Centre, Pickn Pay Promenade, Mitchell’s Plainhospital, Edgars, Shoprite and thedepartment of home affairs.Moses Tabo, Navy Executive Of-

ficer of Simonsberg, says their in-volvement with the centre is not aone-day event.“We have been involvedwith the

centre for the past five years, as-sisting with maintenance andpainting.“Our flag officers encouraged us

to go out and we decided to comeand spend our 67minutes here,” hesays.Other officers also visited other

areas to address various needs aspart of Mandela Day, Tabo says.

A new technology rolled out in ambulan-ces across the city ismaking emergency

medics a target for crime.This as three sources in the industry,who

do not want to be identified as they are notcontractually permitted to speak to the me-dia, claim that robberies and attacks havespiked over the last few months, especiallyin areas such as Mitchell’s Plain, Manen-berg, Hanover Park and Khayelitsha.They believe the spike coincides with the

installation of tablet devices in ambulan-ces, which linkmedics to the call centre andprovide directions to the emergency.Somemedicswho have been held up have

even been asked to hand over the “tablets”,sources say.

Useless outside ambulancesThe tablets, according to a sourcewith in-

dustry knowledge, have been installed in away that makes them “impossible to re-move” from the ambulances.The tablets are also locked and will only

work on the health department’s system,and are useless for any other user.The installation of the devices, referred

to as MDTs, cost about R300m, the sourcesays.Medics have reportedly raised their con-

cerns with management, but have received

no reaction.They are now calling for immediate ac-

tion to be taken, to inform the communitythat the devices are not removable and arenot useable outside the ambulance.Sources say the device, which ismounted

above the dashboard, is clearly visible atnight.The system also updates continuously,

and can be heard beeping from outside theambulance.They say in some areas, medics even

choose touseambulances inwhich thedevi-ces have not yet been installed or switch itoff.They say no education has taken place in

communties to inform the general public ofthe function of the MDT devices.

Added pressureThe increase in attacks has left medics

fearful, a source confirms, with many al-ready expected to attend to patients in areasthey feel are unsafe or where gang violenceis prevalent.“We already have the pressure of having

to respond to as many calls as possible. It’snow becoming just a job and we are losingour passion,” he says.The department of health refused to con-

firm the existance of the MDT devices, say-ing to do so could make ambulances moreof a target.They declined to comment further.

We hear of people taking the law into their own handsto deal with criminals, more often these days.Andwhile not only the hardened criminals, but also the

petty thieves are “punished for their crimes” by ordinarymembers of the community fed up by a “lack of policeaction”, very often vigilante justice becomes more thanjust a “simple hiding”.Recently, a suspectedmurderer paidwith his livewhen

residents of Kalkfontein decided to take the law into theirown hands.The reason? The community “distrusts” the police.

Theyalso complain about the lackof policing in their areaas is the case with other crime ridden areas across theCape.In a separate incident earlier thisweek, nine foreigners

and a South African were robbed at the bottom of Lion’sHead in Cape Town.When the victims chased the criminals after the rob-

bery, one called the SouthAfrican emergency number 112– without success.He phoned his mother, who tried phoning the 112 emer-

gency number as well as 10111 for over 20 minutes. Whenshe finally got through to the Cape Town Central policestation, the police officer on the phone did not knowwhere Lion’s Head is. The victims gave up after waitingon help to arrive for 35.Although the above incidents are not related , there is

an agreement: the police were conspicuous in their ab-sence.Such clumsy action (or rather a lack of any action) is

a blot on the name of our sergeants.The longer this poor service continues, the more the

community will continue to take the law into their ownhands – in itself a frightening and unacceptable idea!

Look out for morel mush-roomI’m a Rondebosch-based mushroomforager and fungi researcher in need ofsome knowledge and/or advice fromFish Hoek residents who may havespotted an extremely rare mushroomgrowing in the valley.The morel mushroom is highly

sought-after for its excellent taste and isextremely rare to find in Cape Town.Research has led me to believe that

Fish Hoek was once a hotspot forforaging wild morels, but this is goingback over 50 years.

The morel is brown-yellow, shaped likea small conical brain and usually popsup in spring when the ground warmsup, at least in the northern hemisphereit does.They have been known to pop up after

fires and are believed to be mycorrhizal,meaning that they grow under certaintrees – in this case oak, ash, elm andapple orchards.I am curious as to whether they are

still around.Finding one, or a patch of them, would

be quite a discovery.Any information about these mush-

rooms and their last seen location wouldbe highly appreciated.I wish to find them and collect sam-

ples, as to preserve their spores forfuture propagation around the city.Eating them is undoubtedly a bonus!Please email me at [email protected] if

Cry of desperationBy the time this article is published,another two coffins would have beencarried by bereaved family members toour local cemetery.Another two young lives cut off in the

prime of their youth.More tears, more heartache and more

uncertainty of what to expect next.As a community we are desperate –

desperate to see the end of this senselessbloodshed, desperate to be freed from thisevil that seems to overwhelm everythingin its wake.These are not words of despair, but

words of desperation. In spite of all ourefforts we humanly endeavour to do tomake our community a better place, theauthorities still ignore or choose tooverlook what is happening.As community leaders, organizations,

structures and churches we are doing ourlevel best but the reality is that we arenot the authorities. We are not the police,social development, court or the govern-ment.As long as basic services are not

delivered within the reach of the commu-nity, desperate times will prevail.I hope out of our desperation this time

round we will keep those who areresponsible to render these services,accountable and that if they don’t weshall collectively deal with the matter.

for a special once-off performance onSat-urday 1 August.They’ll be performing in Kat Gilardi’s

Divas one night only, a cabaret show ofdrag queens lip-synching.The annual charity concert is the

brainchild of Kat, who grew up inMitch-ell’s Plain and now lives in RondeboschEast.“I won Miss Gay Western Cape in 2010

and as the titleholder you have to comeup with a fundraising or awareness con-cept,” she explains. Considering therewere already many pageants on offer,Kat decided to do something she enjoyed.

Creativity“Cabaret or lip-synching deserves the

respect of an art form as it was notviewed like that.”Kat explains that there’s a lot of effort,

energy and creativity that goes into pre-paring a song to perform.She decided to create a concert to

showcase Cape Town’s talent on onestage to raise funds and educate localcommunities.“Wearenot just boys ormen indresses

but men with talent and creativity withamazing personalities and good souls.”Funds raised at the concert will go to

The City of Cape Town will give a total ofR2m to community organisations that helpresidents.

Community organisations working inthe City’s areas of focus can apply for a por-tion of the funding now. The policy allowsfor funding to be made available to exter-nal organisations to help deliver servicesin the City’s area of responsibility, to ena-ble community development.

Ready for actionThe City has an established grant-in-aid

policy, but this is the first time that the so-cial development and early childhood de-velopment directorate is disbursing thefunds.

“Our directorate is only a few years oldand so until now our focus has been on get-ting our internal policies, process and pro-grammes up and running,” said SuzetteLittle, mayoral committee member for so-cial development and early childhood de-velopment. “We are now in a better posi-tion to build partnerships with communityorganisations working in the social devel-

opment sector for the benefit of our resi-dents.”

ApplicationsCommunity organisations working in

the areas of early childhood development,street people, substance abuse, youth de-velopment, vulnerable groups and povertyalleviation can apply for funding.

The minimum amount per project isR100 000 and the applications need to in-clude a description of the project and abusiness plan.

“We are bound by legislation to do prop-er checks and balances and to ensure thatthe funds are spent wisely.

“I am excited about the prospect of em-powering organisations to help us changethe social fabric in our communities wherethe need is greatest,” adds Little.

The Western Province CricketClub Badgers (WPCC) hockeyteam has repeated last year’s

heroics and successfully defendedtheir Greenfields Elite Club Chal-lenge title in Durban at the week-end.

The tournament boasts the larg-est total prize money for a SouthAfrican hockey tournament.

WPCC pocketed R25 000 for its ef-forts in securing the tournament’stop honours, which is the highestprize money ever awarded inSouth African hockey history.

The Greenfields Elite Club Chal-lenge is the only non-tertiary na-tional hockey tournament on theSA circuit to feature the country’stop club hockey teams.

The tournament was establishedin 2013 by Riverside Sports andRiverside Hockey Club to show-case proficient top class hockey bypremier players in a festival typetournament.

This year, spectators were treat-ed to an even more exciting displayof intense hockey performancesfrom SA’s top players and clubs.

Participating teams included theBadgers, Kearsney Hockey Club(2nd), Riverside Hockey Club (3rd),Wanderers Hockey Club (4th) andOld Edwardians Hockey Club

Soccer lovers in the Mother City are setfor a treat this weekend as the CapeTown Stadium will play host to the in-

augural Cape Town Cup.English Premier League side Crystal Pal-

ace as well as 18-time Portuguese PremierLeague champions Sporting Clube de Portu-gal (Sporting Lisbon) will feature alongsidelocal clubs Ajax Cape Town and SuperSportUnited.

The tournament will kick off on Friday at17:45 when SuperSport United’s Gordon Ige-sund (a former Ajax Cape Town coach him-self) and his charges pit their skills againstAlan Pardew’s Palace.

This will be followed by home favouritesAjax facing off against Sporting, who haverecently appointed former Benfica coachJorge Jesus to mentor the Lisbon outfit.

According to Sporting’s Joao Gomes, theyare proud to be invited to play in the pre-sea-son spectacle in Cape Town.

“We are certain that participation in thistournament will be beneficial for the prepa-ration of the first team for the season,” saysGomes.

“We point out that for Sporting to partici-pate in a tournament in South Africa has aspecial feeling because as early as 28 July1997 we have a strong bond – the date onwhich NelsonMandela became amember ofmerit of Sporting Clube de Portugal.”

The battle lines are drawn once again onSunday with the losers of Friday’s matcheshoping to salvage pride in the third placeplay-off, which precedes the final. It takesplace at 13:00.

Ari Efstathiou, Ajax Cape TownCEO, saidat the launch of the Cape Town Cup that thetournament would be a springboard for fu-ture collaborations between the club and theCity of Cape Town.

“We hope to grow this tournament in theyears to come and host other big-name soc-cer clubs in Cape Town. We ask for the sup-port of the entire Cape Town community tomake this event a hugely successful one.”

Tickets cost between R150 and R325, withthe City offering an “early bird” promotion:Buy a R200 ticket for Friday’s matches (forseats on the middle tier of the north andsouth stands of the Cape Town stadium) andreceive a free ticket to Sunday’s final day.

For thosewhowant to attend oneday, tick-ets will cost R150 (east stand) or R250 (weststand). R325 will secure a ticket for a seat onthe west stand for both Friday and Sunday.

Anunlimitednumber of tickets are availa-ble for students (over 18 years) and pension-ers (over 60 years) at R150, R250 and R325.For scholars (0-18 years), an unlimited num-ber of tickets are available at R100, R200 andR300.
