NEW HORIZONS
Burglaries spark angerA group of angry residents fromNewHori-
zons took to the streets on Wednesdayevening saying “enough is enough”.Residents gathered on the corners of Oys-
tercatcher and 18th Avenue to air their frus-tration relating to a spike in crime in theirneighbourhood. They banded together say-ing they would no longer tolerate thievingcriminals terrorising their area.Incensed resident Eleanor Geland says
she fears for her life as she has witnessedmen invading her neighbour’s yard.“These guys are brazen and they do these
activities at any time of the day. I was athome one morning when these culpritscame intomyneighbour’s yardandbroke in.I was absolutely terrified,” she says.Geland says shewas alerted by anoise just
after 03:00.“I could not do anything because I was
home alone with my children. And even ifyou do try and alert somebody by making anoise, that could easily cost you your life,”says Geland angrily. She adds she has experienced more than
five incidents in one week. Residents havelost electronics, appliances and jewellery asa result of frequent burglaries.“Almost every day we have three houses
broken into. These thieves get through yourkitchen window and break the burglar barsbecause thematerial thatwas used is of suchlow quality that breaking and entering is soeasy,” she says.According to Geland, she now has to walk
around in fear of being attacked or burgledby criminals.“Just earlier today I walked past the guys
who I know are guilty of these acts. I was soscared because you do not know what theyare capable of.”The group of angry residents extended an
invitation to proportional representativecouncillor Patricia van der Ross.Van der Ross initially refused to attend,
saying the planned march was “illegal”.However, later the evening, van der Ross
attended the gathering and said that shewanted to clear up a few things with resi-dents.
A group of residents from NewHorizons gather to voice theirconcern over burglaries in the area.

“I came here tonight to listen to the plightof residents and I can understand your frus-tration. I am also fed up of the crime in thearea. But what must be understood is that
we need to follow the correct processes if wewant to be taken seriously. I am recordingyour concerns andwill take this to the policestationandask them to take action,”VanderRoss explained. She pleaded with residents not to take
marching action to a suspects home as thiscould incriminate them.“I will not be taking part in a march as
this is deemed as an illegal gathering. How-ever if people want to take this further wecanapproach the right peoplewith our con-cerns and complaints,” she added.Residents aired their concerns toVander
Ross saying they especially do not get sup-port from the police.“We want the police to patrol in the area
daily. especially in the morning while peo-ple are on their way to work. These activi-ties take place throughout the day so if theycould have a dedicated patrol van in the ar-ea we would feel much better,” residentsechoed.Another resident Kim Louw says she is
disappointed and angered at the same timedue to the spike in crime.“I live in a gap home and it just feels like
we’re being targeted. It cannot go on like thisbecause we work hard for our things thenyou get people who want to rob you of yourhard-earned goods,” Louw says.Despite Van der Ross’ plea for residents
not to take part in a march, they continuedwith it nonetheless. The group marched to an alleged suspects
home inNewHorizons and gathered outsidedaring him to come out as residents wantedto claim their goods back from him.The community police forum and neigh-
bourhood watches were granted permissionto see if the alleged suspect was inside butthis proved unfruitful.

Longing to see son after 64 yearsCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
An 83-year-old woman has onewish beforeshe departs for the hereafter– she wants
to meet her son that was taken from her aday after giving birth.Betty Maritz says her heart’s desire is to
meet her only child who should be 64-years-old this year.
Maritz tells her heart-wrenching storywith desperate longing, saying she will onlyfeel better once they are reunited.“I was 19 when I fell pregnant. At the time
I lived with a woman in Retreat who tookme in as her own daughter.“She eventually noticed that I was preg-
nant. I was already inmy second trimester,”she says.“She asked who the father was and I told
her. I suggested that the guy come meet heraswell but she did notwant to hear anythingof it. Not long after, the father of my childdid not contact me anymore,” Maritz ex-plains.She says on the day that she gave birth she
remembers a midwife assisted in her deliv-ery at home.“After giving birth I was so tired and ex-
hausted. All I know is I gave birth to a boywho had a distinct birthmark on his back. After the birth I was exhausted, my guardi-an mother said we could go the next day togive my child’s details at the clinic,” she re-calls.The next morning Maritz says she was
woken up and was told to wash her baby aswell as his clothes.“My guardian then offered to take my ba-
by to the clinic and have his details regis-tered. I can’t read orwrite soI gave hermy baby as she of-fered her help,”Maritz says. When her guardian re-
turned later that afternoon, she came home drunk andwithout Maritz’s child.“I asked her where my
child was and all she saidwas: ‘Wat worry jy vir jou?Jou kind is vrek.’ (Why areyou worried? Your child isdead).”Maritz couldn’t believe
her child was dead and keptasking her where the babywas, but her guardian keptgiving the same responseeach time, she says.“Up until today I do not
know what happened to mychild on that day, but I have
a strong suspicion that he was either sold orgiven away. I just wantmy child back,”Mar-itz cries. She adds her search for her son never
stopped, but due to too little detail she hashad no luck.“But I will continue,” she says. She has since moved to Parkwood and
could not have more children.“I feel like I was robbed of being amother.
My son might be out there thinking I aban-doned him and at times it feels like I threwhim away, but I just want to see him so I cantell him that is not what happened.”V What are your thoughts? Starting with the word“Post”, SMS your views to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

provision for more than 50% of the total la-bour budget being set aside for local labourfrom theKewtowncommunity. The successof theproject and theprogramme ingeneralcan largely be attributed to the establish-ment of a network of private and publicpartnerships. We are indeed makingprogress possible by working together,”Van Minnen adds. The project not onlycomprised general maintenance work, such as repairing leaks in pipes and roofs, glazing and painting. Attention was alsopaid to external and internal walls withcracks and holes, the waterproofing offloors, renewing floor coverings, seeing toit that doors and windows function proper-ly, and ensuring that electrical and plumb-ing installations comply with regulations. The window sills, stairs, balustrades andhandrails were also refurbished. The external communal areas between

gion Quinton Arendse emphasises the sat-ellite office was established there to bringservices closer to the community as well asto encourage partnerships within the com-munity. “We cannot work in this area if wedo not have strong relationships. We wereunder pressure to bring this service closerto the community thanWynberg. Now that
it’s closer I believe people will prefer com-ing here instead of Wynberg and now thebuilding is becoming too small,” he said.“The moral for our service delivery is
going to be to provide the service to thecommunity and have our social workers goout and support the community,” Arendseadds.Fritz added he is elated to open the of-
fice. “I just want the community to under-stand that we do not want this office to bea white elephant. We want this office to bea catalyst of change in the community. Weneed this place to become a haven for peo-ple in the community,” Fritz says. The Grassy Park local office falls under
the Metro South Regional Office, andbrings the total number of local offices inthe province to 39. The Grassy Park LocalOffice has a full staff compliment of five so-cial workers, three social auxiliary work-ers, and one assistant community develop-ment worker. The community of Grassy Park suffers
from high levels of substance abuse.

Xhosa chess book a winning moveEARL HAUPT
@EarlHaupt
The game of chess has become much moreaccessible to Xhosa speaking people of
the Western Cape after the department ofcultural affairs and sport (DCAS) in con-junction with Watu Kobese, handed overthe isiXhosa chess books, the first of itskind, to four schools last week.
Kobese spent more than a year develop-ing the book, complete with authentic ter-minologies, creating a new chess languagefor the wider Xhosa community in the prov-ince and the country.
The ceremony, held at Hazendal PrimarySchool, saw the three other schools (Sopo-kama Primary School, Masiphumelele Pri-mary School and Nomlinganiselo PrimarySchool) have the books handed over to themby Kobese and DCAS provincial ministerAnroux Marais.
Kobese is one of the country’s foremostchess players. He holds the title of interna-tional master and he has represented SouthAfrica internationally on numerous occas-sions.
Kobese pointed out the impact chess hashad on his life, something he hopes will be-come more common following the distribu-tion of this book. “My biggest break camein 1990 when I got a scholarship to go andstudy chess in Germany. I studied there forthree years and after that I played profes-sionally. In 2001 I was African championand I have been SA champ on six occasions. And I’m still playing as a member of the na-tional team.”
Kobese identified the need for a Xhosabook on chess and worked together withDCAS to develop the Xhosa terminology forchess pieces and moves. “I got to the pointwhere I was losing the players in terms oftheir interest when I was simply explaining
the pieces and the meaning of the pieces,”said Kobese.
Kobese said although chess has becomestandardised after its origins in India(Chaturanga) in the 15th century, that evenwith the European languages, the names ofthe pieces are not translated directly. “Evenwithin the European languages the piecesare a reflection of their dynamics.”
English is seen as the universal languagein today’s society, but when trying to ex-plain chess in indigenous languages, newwords need to be created in order to makethe game more identifiable to someone notfamiliar with English.
“So we have, for example, pieces: the rookhas been translated to a gun, but a big gun.Bishop is a spy in Xhosa and even the nameof chess has been changed or reinventedand is called intimba (check mate).”
The handing out of the first Xhosa chessbook will enable a new generation of chessplayers to learn the game in their mothertongue. PHOTO: EARL HAUPT

Property declared ‘a problem’Aproperty inHeathfieldhasbeendeclared
a problem building by the City of CapeTown’s Problem Building Unit.A delapitated house in in Heahtfield has
been an eyesore for residents in the area forseveral years and are again calling on theCity of Cape Town to take action.Mayco member for safety and security JP
Smith says one of the complaints related topeople occupying a caravan on the propertyand have now taken up occupation in thehouse. “The owner of the property is de-ceased,” Smith says.Mayco member for finance Ian Neilson
says the City can confirm that the propertyhas an account with debt outstandingcharged against the property for rates, servi-ces, collection costs and a Problem Building
tariff, as the property has been a declaredproblembuilding in terms of theCity’s Prob-lemBuildingBy-law. “TheCity has initiatedlegal collection to recover the debt outstand-ing, however we have faced challenges as noexecutor has been appointed to wind up theestate. The legal collection process has beenprogressing slowly due to it not being possi-ble to serve the required legal documents asprescribed by the relevant legislation,” hesays.Neilson says the City is currently investi-
gating alternative legal solutions that couldlead to sale of the property and collection ofthe debt outstanding. The property is situated on 5th Road in
Heathfield.People’s Post previously reported (“Time
to clear the grime”, 28 November 2013), theHeathfield house has neighbours up in armsabout the state of the property. According toone of the current tenants at time, Martinevan Reenen, the house was owned by hergrandmother who left the house to the fami-ly. “There are nine of us living in this house, including my sister and her three children, our aunt, uncle and my three children andme. I’ve been living here for a month. Myaunt lived here in the past, but then shemoved out. We’ve been trying to clean up thehouse for the last month, but it’s so difficult, because none of uswork. The house has elec-tricity, but no running water,” she said.Smith says the City has been made aware ofallegations of social issues and use of drugson the premises.
“Any criminal activity should be reportedto the police so that they can investigate andtake action,” he says. He added that theCityis not in aposition to provide security onpri-vately-owned property. On a visit to the property last week, Peo-
ple’s Post found that the caravan had beenremoved, but that the property had been sig-nificantly “renovated”.It appeared that the front of the house had
been extended with wooden planks andpainted in various paint colours. The front door has a lock on it and a bro-
ken down vehicle stood on the front garden. There were also litter strewn all over theproperty and appeared that the garden hasnot been maintained for a long period oftime.

Hall heraldsa ‘genesis’ASTRID FEBRUARIE
@FebAstrid
For the first time in 54 years of the Heath-field High School’s existence the school
finally has a hall of their own.Principal Mark Engelbrecht says since
the 1970s there was a campaign from thestaff and community calling for a schoolhall to be built.
“Numerous calls and fundraisers wereheld but nothing was done for all thoseyears up until the Western Cape EducationDepartment and the Garden Cities Arch-way Foundation came on board to fulfil thisneed for the school,” he says.
Construction on the hall started in Octo-ber last year andwas completely in the firstweek of March this year.
The school hall was handed over the pu-pils and the staff in March, but now a spe-cial opening ceremony will be held on Sat-urday 12 September.
“We would like to invite the community, former teachers, pupils and parents to theopening to celebrate this historic momentwith us,” he says.
However the hall can only accommodate700 people and anyone interested is askedto make contact with the school to book aseat.
Further, Engelbrecht says the staff andpupils are excited and proud of their newfacility as they had to in the past conductall assemblies in the quad outdoors.
“This hall in many ways will open thedoors for the school and the pupils, parentsand teachers. We can now host events andpupils can also organise fundraisers,” hesays.
As part of the celebrations the school alsohas a newproject in place in an effort to pre-serve the history and tradition of theschool.
Wesley Neumann, a staff member of theschool, says all former pupils, teachers andassociates are called upon to contribute tothe time capsule.
“The time capsule will be the genesis ofthe long awaited Heathfield High SchoolAlumni Association,” he says.
Nuemann says guests are urged to bringalong any mementos, photographs or any-thing linked to the school to the openingceremony.
The time capsule will be sealed for 30years and only opened again at the alumni’s30th anniversary on 12 September 2045,Neumann explains.
“By then the incumbent school popula-tion and school community will add morememorabilia to the time capsule,” he says.
The current school population alreadyhas an event planned for 2045 - “Looking for-ward by looking back”.
“This is part of us preserving the ethos, tradition and culture forever,” he says.
To RSVP your attendance of the openingevent at the school, send an email [email protected].

Duo dancing withstars in their eyesASTRID FEBRUARIE
@FebAstrid
A dancing duo from Retreat, along withtheir group Basic Black, will represent
South Africa in an international competi-tion in Italy.
Between them, sisters Tiffany and Steph-anie Adams have over 18 years dance expe-rience.
Stephanie, the eldest at 22 has been danc-ing since age four and her sister since theage of nine. “Dancing is a way of life, it hashelped to keep us off the streets in a placewhere gangsterism and drugs are rife,”Stephanie says.
The two are part of Basic Black, a dancegroup based in Bellville and have experi-ence in ballet, modern, contemporary, Afri-can and hip hop dance styles.
The sisters and their dance crew practisethree times a week. Combined with theirstudies, the schedules of the Adams sistersare quite full. “We practise what we loveand dancing is our first love and will re-main so. We both study – this is to ensurethatwe have something to fall back on,” shesays.
Stephanie is currently studying law atthe University of the Western Cape and isalso in the process of acquiring her teach-ers’ certificate in dancing. “I would love totake my skills and teach other childrenmore about dance and the importance of do-ing something to enhance their lives. Danc-ing is about discipline and balance. It is alsosomething that keeps your mind fresh andyour body healthy,” Stephanie adds.
This year the group has qualified to takepart in the Internation Dance OrganisationCompetition in Remini, Italy.
They are set to compete from18 to 20Octo-ber and are currently in the process of rais-ing funds for their trip which would costthemeach aboutR13 000. “We are extremelyexcited about the trip and competition, butwe are still a long way in raising the fundsin order for us to actually go to Italy.”
The sisters have previously, as part of thedance crew they belong to, travelled to LasVegas to compete in a competition and alsohad to raise their own funds for the trip.
“What is great about these competitionsis that we get to meet dancers from all overthe world. We get to learn their techniquesand styles of dancing and they too get tolearn from us,” Stephanie says.
The sisters are now calling on the com-munity to support them in their effort toraise funds for their trip to take part in thecompetition.
SistersStephanieand TiffanyAdams willrepresentSouth Africaat aninternationaldancingcompetitionin Italy laterthis year. The sistersare fromRetreat andhave beendancing intotal forover 18years.

SA new carsales downNew vehicle sales has declined by 6% in
Julyand theNationalAssociationofAu-tomobile Manufacturers of South Africa(Naamsa) commented that the slow-down indomestic new vehicle sales had continuedwith new car and heavy truck sales com-pared to July 2014.New car sales registered the largest year-
to-date monthly decline.Export sales of new vehicles showed an
improvement with a year-on-year gain.
New car sales declineNaamsa claims sales of new cars in the
consumer driven new car market at 36 506units reflected a substantial decline of 3 509units or a fall of 8.8% compared to the 40 015new cars sold in July 2014.Of the 54 112 new vehicles that were sold
in July, 36 506 were passenger cars – repre-senting an 8.8%, year-on-year, decline forthis segment. Light commercial vehicle(LCV) sales saw a marginal increase, witha total of 15 090 sales – a year-on-year in-crease of 0.7%.
‘Very attractive market’Simphiwe Nghona, WesBank’s Motor Di-
vision executive head, said: “Major compe-tition and very attractive marketing incen-tives frommanufacturers have driven LCVsales all year. Even though sales in this seg-
ment look relatively flat, they’re quite posi-tive given the overall market conditions.”The Reserve Bank’s recent interest rate
hike of 25 basis points (0.25%) will also af-fect heavily indebted consumers, who willhave to spend more of their disposable in-come on servicing debt.WesBank also advises consumers to not
plan their budgets around August’s drop infuel prices. The petrol and diesel prices areinfluencedbyadepreciating randand inter-national oil prices – both volatile factorsthat could see prices increase in the comingmonths. The relief from lower fuel priceswill most likely be short-lived.Nghona said: “Given the prevailing eco-
nomic conditions, consumers who are cur-rently in the market for a new car shouldconsider the long-term impact on their bud-gets, and carefully structure their financecontracts.“They should use large deposits to help
lower themonthly instalment amounts, andconsider a fixed interest rate to safeguardthemselves against future interest ratehikes. Longer repayment terms could alsoassist with affordability, but buyers shouldbe very cautious when considering balloonpayments. Insurance and maintenancecosts should also be included in mobilitybudgets.”– wheels24.co.za
The July 2015 aggregate new vehicle sales at 54 112 units were down 6.1% from the 57 636vehicles sold in July 2014. Overall, out of the total reported industry sales of 54 112 vehicles,an estimated 44 564 units or 82.4% represented dealer sales, 11.1% represented sales to thevehicle rental industry, 3.4% to industry corporate fleets and 3.1% constituted sales to govern-ment.

Tesla Motors’ CEO Elon Musk says he ex-pects deliveries of its newSUV, theModel
X, in three or four months in the USA.Tesla, however, does not operate in South
Africa, though Musk is South African.Musk also told investors at Tesla’s annual
meeting that the company planned to letsome drivers start testing an autopilot fea-ture at the end of June this year.
Third model, first SUVThe Model X will be Tesla’s third vehicle
since the companywas founded 12 years ago.Currently Tesla makes one car, the Model Ssedan.Tesla originally planned to put the Model
X into production in 2013 but has delayed itseveral times to work on technical issues.Musk said he’s test-driving theModel X nowand is pleased with its progress. He said thecompany is focused on making sure key fea-tures, such as the Model X’s wing-like doorsand its sliding rear seats, work correctly.“It’s got to be a genuine improvement in
utility and aesthetics,” he said.Tesla began 2015 with 20 000 reservations
for theModel X. The company plans to deliv-er 55 000 Model S sedans and Model X SUVs
by the end of this year.
AutopilotTesla’s autopilot feature lets the car drive
itself at highway speeds. It is also expectedthat owners will be able to summon their ve-hicles autonomously from a car park as longas they are on private property. Autopilotwill eventually be available through a freesoftware update to customers with recentversions of the Model S sedan. The Model X will probably have this sys-
tem, too.Musk stressed that drivers must remain
alert and be ready to take back control of thecar. “It is simply meant as a driver-assist-ance feature,” he said.Musk said it would be technically feasible
– in about three years – for the driver to fallasleep and let the car do the driving. He add-ed that it would take several years after thatfor regulators to approve fully autonomousdriving.“That’s my best guess right now,” he said.
“With each passing year, my estimate forwhen it will happen gets closer. This is bothinteresting and alarming.”– wheels24.co.za

Tesla’s Model X SUV will hit the streets soon, although not in South Africa.PHOTOS: TESLAMOTORS.COM
The interior of the Tesla Model X SUV looks very space-age.
The Falcon Wing doors is claimed as an act of true engineering given the complexity of themulti-pivoting hinges.

The Artscape Theatre Centre willcome alive with stories in August
and September, in celebration of Heri-tage month.Heritage Month means different
things to different people but Artscapewill be celebrating our heritage by tell-ing stories and considering how narra-tives are reflected orally, written and increative forms.Through various disciplines, the festi-
val will question identity, with a focuson “who we are, what we are and whatwe have been”, encouraging young andold alike to reclaim and restore the im-portant stories of our heritage, to chal-
lenge misappropriations and find heal-ing.Some of the highlights of the festival
include a new piece by Indoni AcademyDancers, Inkundla, which looks at the“theatre of life” and Siembamba, a mul-tilingual play which explores the life ofa black domestic worker and the whitechild she helped raise.Choirs from around the province will
take to the stage alongside theCapePhil-harmonic Orchestra on Sunday 13 Sep-tember for theWesternCapeChoralMu-sic Association’s (WeCCMA) 2015 Cho-ral Music Eisteddfod.Muchof SouthAfrica’s heritage is tied
up in the stories of neighbouring coun-tries, a point proven by Born aroundHere, a production by Botswana’s Com-pany@Maitisong. The piece tells the of-ten unknown story of Botswana and oth-erneighbouring countries’ contributionto the struggle for freedom inSouthAfri-ca through the eyes of a Botswana fami-ly.Away from the stage, Artscape will
host a dialogue titled “Connecting Crea-tives” on Heritage Day while Artscape’sTunnel (mural area between Artscapeand Civic Centre Parking) will becomethe backdrop forNgokomzekelisoWakhe(InHis Image) – a performance art instil-lation on Thursday 24 and Saturday 26September.V The Artscape Heritage Festival will be on stagefrom Thursday 27 August to Sunday 27 Septem-ber. Tickets are available from Computicket orArtscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695..

lier this year, the South Africantheatre classic Sizwe Banzi isDead, directedbyJohnKani andstarring Mncedisi Shabanguand Atandwa Kani, will be onstageat theBaxterFlipsideuntilSaturday 12 September.
Forty years since John Kaniand Winston Ntshona won theBest Actor TonyAward for theirperformances in the play, whichthey co-created with Athol Fu-gard, and nearly a decade afterthe two theatre veterans re-prised their roles at the Baxterin 2006, John Kani returns as di-rector, with his son in the role
which he made famous. The award-winning iconic
production is about the univer-sal struggle for human dignity.A black man in apartheid-eraSouth Africa tries to overcomeoppressive work regulations tosupport his family.
Kani and Ntshona performedthe play in South Africa, En-gland and on Broadway, wherethey jointly won the covetedTony Awards for Best Actor. In1976 they were arrested by theApartheid Secret Police andwere detained in solitary con-finement for 23 days.
They were only released be-cause of massive demonstra-
tions by the arts fraternity allover the world.
“Sizwe Banzi is Dead becamea statement that articulated theanger of black people againstthese laws,” says the triple Hon-ourary Doctorate recipient,Kani.
“It’s about the universalstruggle of identity, of the digni-ty of the human being, and re-spect for humanity.”V Tickets cost R120 (matinee and Bax-ter Mondays), R130 Tuesday to Thurs-day and R150 over weekends. The Bax-ter Monday special applies where pat-rons pay R120 which includes a mealand the performance. All tickets areavailable through Computicket.
