Police station reshuffleSAMANTHA LEE
@Samantha_Lee121
Five police stations have been added totheMitchell’s Plainpolice clusterunderthe leadership of cluster commander
Major-General Abraham Goss.As of 1 April, Grassy Park, Steenberg,
Lansdowne, Athlone and Philippi police sta-tions have joined Mitchell’s Plain, Lente-geur and Strandfontein police stations tocomplete the new eight-station cluster.Changes have affected all police clusters
in the Western Cape. This is, however, an interim decision and
further changes can bemade before the clus-ters are officially approved.A date for this has not been discussed.Goss says he has his concerns about the
bigger clusters.“Mymain concern is the reaction time. As
police we are required to respond to com-plaints within a certain period of time. Yes,the officers at the respective stations can dothat but for me, being based in Mitchell’sPlain, it will be difficult to get to the scenequickly,” he says.As the cluster commander, Goss attends
to high-profile cases along with the local po-lice.Several meetings have been held with the
station commanders and Goss says they areoptimistic about the changes. With the bigger cluster, certain aspects
will be improved.“This does not mean we will have more
resources,” Goss says. “But wewill getmorepersonnel.Wearewaiting for this to be final-
ised because nothing can be done before thisis approved,” he says. These officers will be transferred from
Nyanga to the Lentegeur base to perform“cluster duties” as they are connected to thestations that have been moved.TheTacticalResponseTeam(TRT)mayal-
so get an added bump as TRT officers linkedto the five stations that have moved may betransferred to the current 40-man squad.Yvonne Adams, acting chairperson of the
Lansdowne Community Police Forum(CPF), recently expressed concern that theywould be overlooked in the cluster.“Mitchell’s Plain is very big. I am con-
cerned that we will be neglected,” she toldPeople’s Post.Goss responds that it would be “brutally
unfair of me to do that”.
“My focus will remain the same and I willensure that all stations get equal attention. The cluster is bigger and it will be challeng-ing, but we can get over it if we work togeth-er.“All the stations need to cooperate. We
will work with them and prioritise crimesaccordingly,” he says.Philippi CPF chairperson Ebrahim Abra-
hams sayshe is optimistic about the changesbut does have concerns.“Mitchell’s Plain and Hanover Park both
have shortcomings. I don’t think it is a goodidea to put all the stations with shortcom-ings together,” he says.“There are also many unsolved problems
that I cannot see headway unless there aresolutions.“Only then can we move forward.”

TOURISM
By cable car from city to Signal Hill?A funicular, tram or cableway could
soon link the city centre to the noonday gun and Signal Hill if Sanparks
has a say.Such a “mechanical people mover” is on
the cards in amanagement plan it has draft-ed to boost tourism.Table Mountain National Park (TMNP),
managed by Sanparks, has released itsdraft management plan for the next tenyears. The public is invited to comment onit.
Something oldA large portion of the plan is dedicated toboosting tourism numbers, which in turnwill fund conservation, heritage and con-stituency building. This entails upgrading a range of existing
tourist spots.First on the list for an upgrade is Boul-
ders Beach, which sees 650 000 annual visi-tors. Visits are growing by over 5% a year. The visitor facility will be redesigned to en-hance visitor experience and visitor flow, the plan states. Other upgrades include theboardwalks, parking area and interpretiveinformation.Aproposedupgrade ofCapePointmay see
infrastructure improvements to the roads, water pipeline and sewerage system, aswellas the visitor centre.TheRhodesmemorial sitemayalso see in-
frastructure upgrades. An investigation isunderway to explore uses for the old zoo sitethere, which could serve as a “gateway” tothe Groote Schuur estate and the park. The Tokai Manor area is also in line for
upgrades, according to the plan. It proposesdeveloping the area into a “vibrant multi-purpose gateway to the parkwhere the envi-ronmental, cultural and social significanceof the area is celebrated through the restora-tion of [the Tokai Manor and surrounds]”.An upgrade of the Signal Hill and Tafel-
berg roads interchange is needed, accordingto the plan, which sees 1.2 million visitors.
Thiswould tie into newdevelopments in theStrand Street quarry.
Something newTo improve access to Table Mountain, San-parks is currently investigating implement-ing a “mechanical peoplemover”whichwilllink the Strand Street quarry to the LionBattery and Signal Hill. This could lead toa range of visitor facilities at the noon daygun and Signal Hill. The management plan also proposes to
make use of other quarries in the City Bowlfor a variety of “low-volume multi-useevents”.Silvermine is also set for development,
with the establishment of a picnic area onthe southern side of Silvermine Dam aswellas re-use of the Groot Silvermine Home-stead as a visitor site linked to Peers Caveand the Sunbird Education Centre. The Silvermine Source-to-Sea project will
be implemented to rehabilitate the river sys-
tems and promote recreational links be-tween the urban environment and the park.Theplanalso looks atwaterways, with the
idea of linking the diversity of the terrestri-al environment with that of the oceanthrough the establishment of a “marinegateway to the Southern oceans”.“The purpose of this gateway would be to
promote the wonders of the ocean througha variety of marine-based research and ma-rine enforcement,” the plan states.A site for this gateway is still being identi-
fied. The plan serves as a reference to theman-
agement and development of the Park in itscurrent and envisaged future form. The plan includes information on the
background, biophysical context, desiredstate, management and programmes at stra-tegic and operational levels.V The full plan can be viewed on the Sanparks website. Public comment can be submitted until Saturday9 May.

State-owned power utility Eskom has re-sumed load shedding. And Eskom’s struggles to cope with elec-
tricity demand puts your computer equip-ment at risk. “PCs are sensitive to powercuts, power dips and power surges, so takethe necessary steps to protect them,” saysDaryl Blundell, general manager at SagePastel Accounting.“When Eskom cuts the power, you could
not only lose the latest changes to the filesyou’re working on, your open files could be-come so corrupted or damaged that you willnot be able to restore them,” he added. As a result, Blundell has offered five sug-
gestions on how South Africans can protecttheir computer equipment.
Regular backupsKeep your latest data backed up so that
you do not lose hours of work or any impor-tant information when the power goes out.Regular data backups are a must, not onlybecause of load shedding, they can also bea lifesaver if your hard drive crashes oryour computers are stolen. If possible, in-vest in an offsite backup system.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS)In the event of a power failure or load
shedding, a UPS gives users time to exit ap-plications they are working on and savetheir work before they safely shut downtheir PCs.A backup power inverter system is anoth-
er option.
Switch off all PC’s not performing criticalfunctionsAny data that is open on a PC is at risk
of being damaged or corrupted in the eventof a power failure. For that reason, you needto get into the habit of closing applicationsand shuttingdowndesktop computerswhenyou are not using them for a while.
Switch off PCs and unplug themTo reduce the risk of damage to hardware,
switch off your PCs and unplug them fromthemain power sourcewhen power cuts hit.Otherwise, power surgeswhen electricity isrestored could damage your hardware.
Consider investing in a power bankA power bank can be invaluable for man-
aging your business when there is loadshedding. These portable chargers let youtop up the battery of your USB-poweredmo-bile devices so you can keep going whenthere is a long power outage. – Fin24

Family’s waiting list woesCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
A family in Eagle Park are fed up of be-ing patientwhilewaiting for their newhome.
TheSlamang family consists of quadriple-gic Yusuf (52), his wife Mariam (45) andtheir three children, aged 19, 11 and 9.
Yusuf explains from his bedridden posi-tion that hewas placed on theMama’sHous-ing Project waiting list more than eightyears ago.Hehasn’t beenhelpedyet, despitebeing one of the first 15 beneficiaries placedon the list. The project rolled out its thirdand last phase during 2014.
“I have been living in this area for morethan eight years now waiting for my housebut to no avail. It is sad knowing that I couldhave been in a house with my family al-ready but this hasn’t happened yet,” hesays.
Yusuf, who was deemed disabled after be-ing shot, sits with his family on their bedin a cramped space doubling up as a loungeand kitchen and explains he has been pa-tient for too long and wants progress in re-ceiving his home. “It does not make sensethat I was one of the first 15 people on thewaiting list but years down the line otherpeople who came after me are in theirhomes,” he sighs.
Yusuf and Mariam say they filled out allnecessary documentation at the beginningof the waiting list process in 2011. Theystarted started questioning the process twoyears later when they saw other peoplemove in before them.
“Manyof the peoplewhomoved into thesehouses were placed on the waiting list longafter us. It doesn’t make sense when a 23-year-old moves into a home as the benefici-ary whenwe have been around since the in-
ception of the project,” Yusuf stresses. When following up on how much longer
they would have to wait, they were told the-or papers were lost. “It is infuriating be-cause we are living in dire conditions at themoment with a cramped space for our fami-ly of six, which includes my one-year-oldgranddaughter.Our childrenhavebeenbul-lied by other children in this community, saying they are poor and their father cannotdo anything for them,” Mariam adds.
After hearing about a young womanmov-ing into the area thatwasplaced on thewait-ing list after theSlamang family,Mariam says shewas blinded byrage.
“I went to herhouse and criedwhile I smashed inher house win-dows. I was so an-gry just thinkingabout how long wehave been strug-gling and some-body comes and all of a sudden owns ahouse. It was just unfair,” Mariam says.
According to the Slamang family they arebeing inconvenienced further due to the de-lay. “I stand to get a motorised wheelchairfrom Western Cape Rehabilitation but thiscan only happen once I’m in a house. NowI’m bedridden all day and my wife has tostruggle for at least an hour to get me outof our front door so that I can get some freshair. She also has to shift my position everythree hours to prevent bedsores. If I get amotorised wheelchair it can take a lot offher shoulders,” Yusuf says.
AbeBraafwho is legally assisting the fam-ily says housing is a thorny issue and he un-
derstands the need and plight of the family.Braaf says he is assisting the Slamang
family because “younger and healthy peo-ple are being housed and Yusuf cannot en-dure the suffering he goes through in thewood and iron structure on the open field”.
“This family needs assistance urgentlybecause they cannot spend another winterliving in these conditions.”
Mama’s Housing Project’s community li-aison officer Siva Moodley says the lastphase of the project was rolled out last yearand Mama’s Housing Project will not re-
ceive anymorehousing units.
“The issue withthis project hasbeen coming on along time now. However due proc-esswas followed inissuing houses tobeneficiaries.”
Moodleyhowev-er says the familyshould have put inhaste with regard
to receiving a home. “Sometimes you findthat peoplewaited so longwithout followingup about how far their process is. This par-ticular family has waited for more thaneight years and they shouldn’t have waitedso long.”
However, he adds there “must be answersfor a family who is in such a situation”.
“Someone must take responsibility for[the documents being lost] and there mustbe answers for the family.”People’s Post tried contacting Igshaan
May who sits on the Mama’s HousingProject steering committee for comment onnumerous occasions. He had not respondedat the time of going to print.
“I went to her house and criedwhile I smashed in her housewindows. I was so angry just
thinking about how long we havebeen struggling and somebody
comes and all of a sudden owns ahouse. It was just unfair.”

CRIME:
Mark your valuable itemsResidents in the Grassy Park precinct
have been warned to remain vigilantand to take carewhen leaving vehicles
unattended.Grassy Park station commander Colonel
Shawn van Wyk confirmed there has beena spike in property related crimes especial-ly theft out of motor vehicles.“We have noticed an increase in these in-
cidents in the past few months. We ask ourresidents and motorists to ensure they lockaway their valuables or stash it out ofsight,” Van Wyk says.According to Van Wyk they are monitor-
ing the situation and encourage people toreport any such incidents.“Motorists must also try to ensure that
they uniquely mark their belongings suchas car batteries as well. This will help thepolice identify the owners so they can inves-tigate the case successfully,” he says.Van Wyk suggested when marking car
batteries that owners have either uniquename or numbers etched into the plastic ofthe battery.“By doing this you aremaking itmore dif-
ficult for a criminal. They can easily re-move tippex or permanent markers that iswritten on the battery,” he says.Van Wyk also commended the communi-
ty for coming forward with information re-
garding crime-related incidents.“On Wednesday a well-known gangster
was at the Wynberg Magistrates Court fora bail hearing. The community however stood together
andwent to court to oppose the bail applica-tion, Van Wyk says.“Bailwasdeniedand theywere elated. We
needour community to continue taking thisstance toward crime in their neighbour-hoods,” he says.Van Wyk has encouraged reluctant resi-
dents to bring forward any information re-garding crime so harsher sentences can besecured against the perpetrators posingthreats to the community.“We do still find that some people are
scared to report crimes in their area, espe-cially after shootings.“They have a lot to say before the police
arrive but are reluctant to give informationthat could prove vital for investigations,”Van Wyk says.Residents have also been warned to put
away their cellphones when walking in theroad as this makes them easy targets.“We reiterate that residents shouldn’t
walk with their cellphones showing as op-portunistic thieves prey on this sort ofthing. Jewellery itemsmust also be stashedaway,” Van Wyk adds.

LAVENDER HILL:
Joe Marks Boulevard unveiledCHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
Motorists in Retreat and Lavender Hillmay have noticed some change dur-ing this week after a popular road has
been renamed after struggle activist Joseph‘Joe’ Marks.
Residents and family of Marks gatheredon the corners of Prince George Drive andConcert Boulevard on Wednesday 22 Aprilwhen Concert Boulevard was renamed toJoe Marks Boulevard.
Renamed on what would have been thestruggle activist’s 79th birthday, family andresidents were happy to celebrate the occa-sion.
Lavender Hill Civic Association chairper-son Charles Daniels says he is pleased therenaming finally took effect after initiallybeing proposed during 2013.
“We are glad that the work of Marks is be-ing recognised in this manner. At first wethought this would not happen but are sograteful that it has finally taken shape,”Daniels said.
In an address by Marks’ daughter, CharlinMarks, she said her father instilled in herand her siblings to “love one another”.
“He always told us that ‘you are the best, and to achieve great things you have to dobetter’,” she said.
She added her father had a passion for edu-cation even though he only attained grade7. “I can remember he always helped mewith my geography and history homework. And although he only attained standard five,he gave us the real story of our history –even though this is still not reflecting in ourhistory books today,” she said.
The family attested to the fact that Marks
would always put his community first in ev-erything he did.
Although Marks worked in governmentfor a many years and was earning a good sal-ary, he refused to move away from LavenderHill, Charlin recalled of her father.
“Many people do not know this, but the on-ly thing my father ever truly bought for him-self of his salary was his car. The rest wasploughed back into the community,” shesays.
“He could have even left the area and livedsomewhere else but he refused to leave hiscommunity behind and continued living inOrrel Laan for 42 years.”
Mayor Patricia de Lille said Marks was anactivist and servant worthy of being hon-oured.
“His contribution is vividly rememberedby many who expressed their support. Manyremember him as being an advocate for thepoor and for social issues,” De Lille said.
She added that with the unveiling of JoeMarks Boulevard, they “remember a manwho worked tirelessly to serve his communi-ty in any way he could. We believe it is fittingto honour his life’s work.”
Recently-elected ward 72 councillor KevinSouthgate said the occasion was a memora-ble occasion for the community.
“Marks was an inspiration to many of usas young people. He always encouraged usto be sincere community activists whoplaced the community first.
“Today is a fitting way to honour a manwho was a pioneer, a selfless servant of thecommunity and a true catalyst for change,”Southgate said.V What are your thoughts on the renaming of ConcertBoulevard to Joe Marks Boulevard? Starting with theword “Post”, SMS your views to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

And to say thank you to the organi-sations, thedepartment of communitysafety MEC Dan Plato and the mayor-al committee member for safety andsecurity JP Smith came bearing gifts.
Ward Councillor Melanie Arendse, who initiated the event, says shewanted to give recognition to the peo-ple who sacrifice their time and liveswithout any remuneration.

She adds the fancy affair held at theParkwood Community Centre waspaid for fromherward allocation bud-get. “I wanted to do something con-structive with the money I had left
and decided on this. I approachedSmith about the idea and he pointedme in the right direction on how to goabout it,” she says.
Arendse says the event was a mo-mentous occasion as it was the firsttime this was done in her ward.
“We want to recognise the commu-nication channel and fruitful relation-ship that has been established be-tween the crime fighting organisa-tions and our local police. Their hasbeen a notable mindshift in the atti-tudes in our community and itsthrough the efforts of our crime fight-ers,” she says.
Arendse adds the closing hours ofhouse shops, destroying of fires oncorners and youth wanting to formpositive youth groups has had a posi-tive impact in the community.
“We even see that more people nowwant to join the neighbourhoodwatches. And our youth are willing tocome on-board as well which is a defi-nite benefit because previously youwould never see this happening inParkwood,” Arendse adds.
Smith said hewas proud to be a partof the evening and encouraged othercommunities to follow this trend.
“I always tell ward councillors whosay they are concerned for safety in
their area to put their money wheretheir mouth is. Arendse has shownthis tonight and that’s why I was will-ing to come out here tonight in sup-port of the event,” Smith says.
Grassy Park police station com-mander Colonel Shawn VanWyk saidhe was very excited for the occasionand looks forward toworkingwith theParkwood community.
“We cannot have successes at thepolice station if the community doesnot workwith us. Therefore i look for-ward to our relationship growing inthe manner that it has in the past fewmonths,” he says.

Do you remember the first book you read?Maybe it was a fairy-tale, in which a beautiful princess
was saved by a strong and dependable prince, or the ad-ventures of little animals as they relied on their friend-ship to escape dangers.Maybe your first book was a religious text, telling of
great miracles and teaching you how to live a good life. How many of us have lost ourselves in an adventure
or a love story, unable to stop turning the pages? As World Book Day was celebrated last week, readers
across the world picked up their favourite books. However, amongst our children – and even ourselves–
reading has become a dying past-time.We have turned the TV, radio or computer on, leaving
our books gathering dust.A great pity, as those very books contain life lessons
and a means to escape the dullness of our reality. But reading is more than just an escape.Themental stimulationof reading can slow thedevelop-
ment of diseases such Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Read-ingwill alsoboost yourvocabularyand improveyourgen-eral knowledge and memory.Regular readers have also been proven to have better
concentration and focus. They are also better analyticalthinkers, studies show. And many of these benefits can be carried over to chil-
dren, especially when their parents read to them from ayoung age. These children have been found to develop stronger ac-
ademically.Reading to your children will help them develop lan-
guage skills as well as concentration and logic.Instead of celebrating World Book Day once a year, it
should be celebrated every day.Switch off the TV or computer and curl up with a good
book, sharing the story with your family.

Report reckless taxi driversRecently, in the space of two days, I wasnearly driven off the road by taxiscoming down Harfield Road from Kenil-worth’s side towards Main Road, Clare-mont. This has happened so many timeslately, but last week Tuesday morning (14April) was the ultimate.Four mini taxis filled with passengers
were driving in the right lane, while fourcars, including myself, turned from MainRoad (at Scala Chemist) into HarfieldRoad.
I was horrified when a car followedthem in the right lane to get to MainRoad. Traffic was blocked in Main Roadas two taxis just sped across withoutstopping. My biggest concern is that this situa-
tion has intensified. There are mini taxistransporting children to the school.Children are walking to the school fromMain Road, as well as from HarfieldStation. These taxi drivers do not care about
anyone and they are really a threat toour society and safety.I really want to plea with people to
report any incident of reckless driving tothe necessary authorities. Hopefully wecan get some assistance from our trafficdepartment in this regard. It is all about the safety of our commu-
nities.

Sing no toviolenceLOUISA STEYL
@LouNotes
CCapeTownmusicianNevilleDhas tea-med up with two other South Africanartists to sing out against Xenophobia.
Gospel singers Judith Sephuma and Pa-trick Duncan were in Cape Town last weekto record Pray, which will was released onWednesday 22 April.Neville originally wrote the song for Ju-
dith, who recorded it for her gospel album,The experience, but this time round the songfeatures three voices.Neville explains that they thought the
song was very appropriate when looking atthe current situation in South Africa withregards to recent xenophobic attacks.“It’s just really a prayer,” he says, ad-
ding, “I don’t care who you pray to.”He adds that of course there’s more to
fixing the situation than praying, but thethree believe it’s a good place to start.“It’swherewe get ourwisdom,” and from
there they go out and do what they can doin action. The reasonNeville asked Patrick and Ju-
dith to record this single is because thethree of them, have travelled extensively toperform all over Africa.“As soon as it started, we really felt it,”
he says, again referring to the xenophobicattacks that have been making headlinesrecently. With many friends from other African
countries, Xenophobia is an issue that hitsclose to home, for all three singers, but itwould be something they felt stronglyabout even if they didn’t have friends fromnorth of the border. “Just based on the factthat they are human beings, our brothers,we should be doing something.”Patrick, Judith and Neville, recorded the
single, and the music video on Mondaywith the help of Andrew and Jeremy Vil-joen fromDigital Forest Studios, TimLeng-feld from TLMastering, WOWTV, who didthe video recordings and sponsors EuclidJacobs and Mark Jackson.“Everybody ca-meonboard, free of charge, just saying: ‘Wewant to be a part of this’.”Praywas released as amusic video on so-
cialmedia platforms and is currently beingsampled on local radio stations.Neville says there has been a lot of inte-
rest from television stations to broadcastthemusic video and while he can’t confirmwhowill pick it up, DStv’s Faith BroadcastNetwork already aired the song on Sunday26 April. With Pray, Neville wants to encourage
other artists from all over the world to addtheir voice to something.“There’s a lot of negativity all over the
world as far as South Africa is concernedand we felt like we wanted to see anotherside of South Africa.” He says he doesn’twant the world to look at our country andsay: “They killed our people and nobodysaid anything.”Pray is available for download from digi-
tal stores like iTunes and Amazon.V Visit Neville’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MR.NEVILLE.D or Twitter profile at @NevilleDMusic to hear the song.

A young man is giving back to the sportthat has given him so much.Sean Rice (25) from Lakeside is a
world champion paddleskier. With Paddle-Life he is putting back into the sport muchmore than he could ever get out of it.“After winning the ICF Surfski WorldChampionships in 2013, I thought I hadreached a peak in my paddling. Boy, was Iwrong,” he says.“Last year was a fantastic year for me. Iwonmost of the big international races over-seas, including EuroChallenge Surfski Racein Spain, the US Surfski Championships inSan Francisco, the Canadian Champion-ships in Vancouver and the Hong KongDragon Run in November. I ended the yearwith a third place at TheDoctor in Perth anda second place at the Cape Point Challengein Cape Town. I was ecstatic with the yearas the international field is tough and thereis very tight competition between SouthAfrica and Australia,” he says.“Paddling has changedmy life, it takesmeto beautiful places, I feel at home in theocean and love being fit and healthy. It is agreat privilege that I can travel all aroundthe world and share this withmany people.”Sean says PaddleLife is a team effort be-tween him and his partner Emily McGrath
(24), a Fish Hoek local and a UCT Honoursgraduate. She heads up the administrationand organisational side of the PaddleLifeworld tour and he does all the coaching andpaddling.According to Sean, after he finished hisHonours degree in Marketing, he decided itwas too soon to “settle down” and find a realjob.“Emily had the same idea. We decided itwas time to give back to the paddling world. We set up an international paddling move-ment called PaddleLife. In the past, surfski
paddling has been extremely competitiveand the focus has been on racing and elitepaddlers, which is great. But with the globaltrend of health improvements and lifestylechanges we want to change the idea of surf-ski paddling. It really is a sport anyone cando – all ages, all sizes and all fitness levels. The sport is unique in the sense that you canget coached by the best in the world,” hesays.“PaddleLife had a fantastic start. We havebeen touring aroundAustralia andNewZea-land, sharing our enthusiasm and knowl-
edge of the sport. The response from the in-ternational paddling community has beenamazing so far and we expect it to carry onfor the rest of the year. We are heading to17 countries and 34 cities in the comingmonths, and plan to teach over 1000 paddlersby the end of the year. We will pretty muchreach all corners of the globe.”Sean says his fellow competitors think heis abit crazy forwanting to race competitive-ly while also travelling for PaddleLife. “Iwill be keeping up a training regime as bestI can and I plan to be competitive at all thebig races around the world. It is a challenge, but it is what keeps life interesting for me.I have competed in the first internationalrace of the year in Auckland at the begin-ning of March. I managed to take the winconvincingly.”After that he raced in the Manly WharfBridge to Beach race in Sydney where he al-so won. “It was a fast 11 km paddle past theSydney Opera House. The true test of theyear will be the next ICF Surfski WorldChampionships in Tahiti in October.“The SA trials are being held at the endof April in Durban, where I will be compet-ing. It is a true honour to get selected to racefor your country,” he says.V Visit www.yourpaddlelife.com for more information.
