Community police forums and the police say they will support the movement “as long as they act with- in the framework of the law”. “Pagad is active again following the cry from the community,” says Osman Sahib, an executive mem- ber of Pagad. “In meetings held over a couple of months it was established that the community is frustrated as every second house in Sherwood Park has a drug addict. Everybody is affected by drugs; youngsters are stealing from their parents and young girls are selling their bodies to support their habit.” Sahib says people are fed-up with drug abuse which has swept through the community. “Even parents who have raised their children with a moral up- bringing have seen them turn to drugs. The community feels help- less as they say the police, politi- cians and even religious leaders are unable to help with the scourge of drugs and save their children.” A 500-strong march was held on Wednesday in Sherwood Park, where Pagad protested against drug dealers. Sahib said this is the first of many such marches in the area. “At Wednesday’s march when the community approached a drug dealer, he admitted that he was sell- ing and said he would stop.” Sahib says Pagad will do whatev- er it takes to stop the scourge of drugs.” When asked what Pagad’s anti- drug action would entail, Sahib re- sponded: “They will be applying enough pressure on the authorities to protect women and children and the marches will be done within the framework of the law.” People’s Post previously report- ed that Mitchell’s Plain police ex- pressed a zero tolerance approach towards Pagad after its members il- legally gathered in Lentegeur to is- sue a warning to an alleged drug dealer (“Police get tough on Pagad”, 18 August 2009). The Mitchell’s Plain police, to- gether with Metro Police, warned the crowd that the gathering was il- legal. Members of the crowed reported- ly threatened to kill police officers, whereupon police dispersed the gathering with rubber bullets and a stun grenade, and arrested 58 Pa- gad members. All 58 appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court and were charged with intimidation of police members and contravening the Ille- gal Gatherings Act. They were re- leased on R300 bail each and the case was postponed until 1 October 2009. People’s Post tried to establish the outcome of the court appearance in 2009, but police were unable to as- sist. However, Sahib says the cases were thrown out of court due to lack of evidence. “We will always follow the proper procedures when it comes to having marches and rely on the support of the authorities, but we as the com- munity cannot sit still and pretend nothing’s happening,” he said. He added: “Pagad had results that no other movement has had. When we came out 14 years ago, most drug dealers stopped selling. This isn’t something we are doing for our- selves; we have children and fami- lies and we need to end drug abuse and gangsterism. It has been prov- en that drug dealing can be stopped when pressure is applied.” People’s Post tried to gain com- ment from Major General Jeremy Vearey, Mitchell’s Plain cluster head about Pagad’s plan, but was unable to do so by the time of going to print. When the paper asked Sahib about Pagad’s silence over the past year, he responded that they “have never been quiet, but have always held meetings, but the media only became aware of them when march- es were held”. “When people reach out to us, we are there to see how we can help. The movement is reacting on peo- ple’s vulnerability.” Manenberg police station’s Cap- tain Wynand Muller said the police will support the marches as Pagad has the same goal in mind. Referring to last week’s Sher- wood Park march, Muller said: “Pa- gad has a concern over drug dealing and the community came out to sup- port them. A strong police contin- gent watched over the march. There were top police members, members from the police and dog unit and a chopper on standby.” Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Ath- lone police spokesperson, says they will too support the organisation, but it must be within the frame- work of the police. “We will support any organisa- tion which wants to rid areas of drugs and crime, but they must act within the South African law and the Constitution and respect all peo- ple’s rights. “No vigilante groups will be sup- ported or those who think they are above the law. If organisations do, action will be taken against them.” Hanif Loonat, chairperson of the Nyanga Cluster Community Police Forum said: “I believe there is a place for Pagad in these challenging times. “My plea to Pagad is let us as law- abiding citizens raise our concerns within the ambit of the law, as was demonstrated in the march. “Let Pagad assure and build the trust between the authorities and the organisation. Helpless commu- nities are looking to Pagad for as- sistance in the eradication of drugs.” . Pagad will be holding a series of meetings with the objective of es- tablishing branches in various are- as. A meeting was held last night in Lavender Hill to discuss how Pagad can assist following the gang vio- lence which has been ongoing for a year and has claimed the lives of six people over the weekend. End of the road for notorious walkwayREYANA STEYN

PLANS are in motion to have a walk-way in Athlone cleaned to ensure no

dumping or crime takes place.

The walkway runs from Langa to the Ath-

lone Stadium.“The place looks terrible,” says Suzette

Little, councillor for Ward 49.“People are dumping on the site. The bush

is overgrown and, because it has never beencleaned, artificial hills have formed.

“What’s really alarming is people are seengoing into the walkway and disappearingbehind the artificial hills. Nobody knowswhat is happening there; that is a mystery. There have also been numerous reports ofpeople being robbed.”

Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone po-lice spokesperson, could not confirm re-ports of robberies on the walkway, but en-couragedpeoplewhohadbeen robbed there,to report these.

He added: “We have received reports ofgang activity and people smoking drugs onthe canal which runs next to the walkwayland police are investigating.”

Little says plans are being discussed withthe Solid Waste Department.

“We have been in meetings with officialsof the Solid Waste Department and theyhave gone back to their management andwill let us know when the clean-up will be-gin, which will be soon.”

She also urges people to stop dumping, asthey are “destroying their own communi-

ty”. “We appreciate residents raisingtheir concerns about dumping, and askthat they try to get the registration num-bers of cars belonging to people who aredumping, or to identify who is dumpingso that action can tbe taken againstthem.”

Anyone caught dumping will be subjectto a fine.

The minimum fine for littering is R500,with a maximum of R10 000.

Fines of more than R2 500 can only beimposed by the courts. If it is a first of-fence, the fine for dumping is R1 000,

while R20 000 applies for a second offence. In more serious cases, offenders may re-

ceive a prison sentence.A fine can also be imposed for dumping

of builders’ rubble.Additional penalties vary depending on

the volume of material dumped.Report dumping to the Corporate Call

Centre on 0860 103 089.If the public has information on the iden-

tity or vehicle registration numbers of thosewho have dumped rubbish, they should con-tact the Solid Waste Bylaw EnforcementUnit on (021) 400-6157.

Fire kills woman, families left destituteREYANA STEYN

FIVE families are seeking refuge inthe Athlone Community Centre fol-

lowing a blaze at their Kewtown flats onSaturday which claimed the life of an 83-year-old woman.

The woman died of smoke inhalation onthe way to hospital. Five other people whowere also treated and have recovered.

“At 07:00 police officers received a reportthat block one in Kewtown was burning,”says Warrant Officer IanBennett, Athlone policespokesperson.

“On their arrival theysaw that the second storeyof the flat was burning andthat the community wastrying to extinguish thefire.”

“The community spranginto a rescue operationwhere they tried gettingthe people out safely. Afive-year-old girl wasthrown from the third sto-rey and landed safely inthe ‘human net’ formed byresidents’ holding a blan-ket.

“The residents all madeit out safely, but unfortu-nately the woman died.”

He says the community members had tobe praised for their brave actions. Had itnot been for them there could have been fur-ther loss of life.

“Community members will be receivingcounselling and any others who think theymight need assistance could contact Ath-lone police,” says Bennett.

Marie Gordon, who lost her life, will beremembered by her family for as an “amaz-ing” person.

“She was a friendly person, loving andcaring. She always had something to give

to people,” says Sylvia Isaacs, Gordon’sdaughter.

“We will miss her as a mother. She wasalways there for us when we needed her. Weare sad that she is gone. My mom was a can-cer sufferer for more than 10 years, yet itwasn’t the cancer that killed her.”

Suzette Little, councillor for the area, says disaster management was “great” inassisting the people.

“The 35 people who are in the communitycentre have all been receiving meals fromSouth African National Zakah Fund (SAN-

ZAF) and disaster man-agement has ensuredthat the people receiveblankets, mats and mat-tresses to keep themcomfortable until theyreturn to their homes.

“We don’t know thecause of the fire and on-ly after it has been estab-lished what happenedand the insurance hasgone in to assess the sit-uation, then plans cango forward to have theflats revamped and thepeople moved back intotheir flats. In the inter-im the housing depart-ment have made ar-rangements for the fam-ilies to be moved to

containers and out of the community cen-tre.”

Isaacs says they would like to thank thecouncillor and everyone else who helpedthem through this difficult time.

A memorial service will be held for Gor-don at the Kewtown court tomorrow(Wednesday) and her funeral service willtake place on Saturday.

Anyone who is willing to help the familieswith clothes, food for the memorial servicesor anything can go to the local communitycentre.

Man claims police ‘torture’TAMMY PETERSEN

SUFFOCATED, beaten and tortured in hisown home – all at the hands of the police.

This is the claim of Ismail Moses (26), a taxiowner from Tagus Road, Manenberg, whoclaims officers from the police’s crime inter-vention unit spent two hours trying to gethim to admit to housing a cache of illegalguns inside his wendy house.

Ismail’s aunt, Warda Moses, says she andher 10-year-old son were in bed at about 19:45when she heard a bang at the door as about12 uniformed officers barged into her homeon Tuesday 21 February.

“They came storming in here, scaring myouma – who was watching TV in the lounge– half to death. One of the policemen came in-to my room and pointed a gun at my son andI while the other kicked the door of the otherroom while telling my ouma to shut up.”

She continues that the officers rushed outthebackdoor to thewendyhousewhile “hold-ing (them) hostage” in her bedroom.

Ismail says the officers grabbed him and

questioned him. “The only thing they askedme was ‘Waar is die guns?’ and before I evenhad the opportunity to answer, one of thempistol-whipped me. They repeated the ques-tion and I hadn’t even opened my mouth yetwhen they hit me again,” he says.Ismail, who admits he spent threeyears in Pollsmoor for theft afterhe and a group of friends stole aman’s cellphone in Sea Point whenhe was 21, says the officersgrabbed a plastic bag and put itover his head. “While they tried tosuffocate me, another officer tiedmy hands with cable ties,” he says, showing marks on his wrists.“They threw water on me,wrapped me in a blanket and start-ed beating and kicking me. Everytime I would pass out they wouldremove the bag and throw water atme until I came around beforeputting the bag over my face again. They tor-tured me.”

Inside the house, his grandmother, Gadija, was in a state as she witnessed the beating

from where she was seated in the lounge.“They hit and hit and hit him. How could

they do that?” the 76-year-old says. “I toldthem to stop but all they said to me was ‘Houjou mond’.”

Warda says her son was in-consolable as the officer contin-ued to point the gun at Ismailand his mother. They refused tolet either leave the room.“When I tried to phone someoneto fetch him, an officer grabbedthe phone and threw it in thepassage. I didn’t know what todo. He’s only 10!”

Eventually an officer took thechild outside and a neighbourcollected him.

While some of the officers al-legedly beat Ismail, others start-ed wrecking his wendy house, smashing in the floor with a

crowbar and ripping his ceiling boards anddividers apart.

“I could do nothing. They beat me and beatme for about two hours and when they foundnothing, they untied my hands and left me ly-ing there. They walked out without an expla-nation and not once did anyone even show a

search warrant.”Warda says the squad then simply walked

out, telling her that they had received a tip-offthat Ismail was in possession of illegal guns.

“One of them, the only female officer, thenhad the cheek to ask me if I was alright. Howcould they ask me that? Is what they did al-right? I didn’t even bother to answer her.”

Ismail was taken to Gatesville Medical Cen-tre, where he was treated for severe bruising, two blue eyes, a chest injury and a minorhead injury.

He paid R500 from his own pocket for thehour-long consultation.

“We laid a charge of assault with theManenberg police, and they were very co-op-erative. What happened was disgusting – howdare they come in here and do what theylike?”

Manenberg police spokesperson WarrantOfficer Llewellyn Lakay says the matter isunder investigation and was unable to com-ment further.

‘Drug den’ manhole closedREYANA STEYN

THE manhole in Kewtownallegedly used as a drug

den has been closed.

People’s Post drew attentionto the manhole about a monthago (“Hole in field ‘leads to drugden’”, 1 February).

In addition, the canal next tothe field will be enclosed to safe-guard the community.

Themanhole, whichhasbeenreferred to as a “den” and “dun-geon” by residents, is situatedon a field next to Hickory Road.It has been closed for the pasttwo weeks.

A fence will also be placed atthe collapsing embankmentalong the canal to ensure no-one gets injured.

The hole formed through the collapse of aportion of what used to be a weighbridge onthe field.

The land belongs to the Roads and Storm-water Department’s waste water treatmentplant. The weighbridge, used to weigh truckswhen the Solid Waste building was on the

site, remained after the building was demo-lished.

Athlone subcouncil councillors demandedthat the den be filled after mischievous chil-dren used the hole to hide in when they werebeing chased.

A man also reportedly used the hole foraccommodation for a couple of years.

“We are happy that we don’thave to worry about the denany more and that the matterhas been dealt with,” says Su-zette Little, councillor for thearea.

Councillor Cynthia Clayton, chairperson of the AthloneSubcouncil, shared her view.

“I am also glad the manholeis gone. It was a huge concernfor us, because it was some-thing that put our childrenand the entire community atrisk.

“We would like to thank theSolid Waste Department for

sorting out the problem so quickly.”

This manhole in Kewtown was closed within weeks of People’s Post reporting on it. Photos: Reyana Steyn (Archives)

The collapsing embankment will be enclosed.

New hall ‘willbenefit all’LIAM MOSES

STUDENTS at theAthlone Pre-Prima-

ry school will now haveextra-mural activitiesall year round, after anew hall was opened atthe school last week.

The school previouslyhad to cancel all extra-mural activities in win-ter as it had no indoor fa-cility to use.

Principal FatimaOmar said the hall wouldbe used for an after-careprogramme and otherevents, as well as the ex-tra-mural activities.

“The hall is going to be a tremendous as-set,” said Omar.

“We have extra-curricular activitieswhich form an important part of our pro-gramme. Previously we didn’t have the fa-cility for the learners to take part in theextra-mural activities in winter. We willalso have an after-care facility becausemost of the parents are working parents,”she says.

The hall cost over R1.5 million to buildand was a joint project between the West-ern Cape Education Department (WCED),the Archway Foundation and the Collegeof Cape Town. The school also receivedlearning materials and computer equip-ment. According to Dr Signamoney Naik-er, WCED chief director of Curriculum De-velopment, the aim of the project was toprovide the school with important re-sources that poor communities lack.

Naiker said children in these communi-ties often do not learn as fast as childrenfrom wealthier areas.

“A lot of children have a developmentaland cognitive lag because they come fromhomes which don’t have a reading cul-

ture,” said Naiker.“They don’t have books and resources in

their homes and you need an institutionto provide those resources from an earlyage.

“A lot of poor children play catch-up interms of meeting the demands of the (pri-mary school) curriculum. And early childdevelopment is a great opportunity forlearners to get exposure so that they per-form well in grade one.”

Naiker added that the school was chosenbecause it had a excellent history and be-cause early childhood development stu-dents from Cape College completed theirpractical learning at the school.

Omar said she hoped the entire commu-nity would benefit from the hall and thatothers would be allowed to use it.

“We have a hospice that is based nextdoor to us with terminally ill people, andoften when they have little functions theirpatients have to sit outside,” said Omar.

“We hoping to avail this facility to themand other organisations.”

Omar has been involved with the schoolsince 1983 and has been the principal since1996.

Tournament comes to townTAURIQ HASSEN

“It’s an exciting event to look forward to andthe boys are pumped to partake in this eventin their own back yard,” says Shaheem Galant, principal of Islamia College in Lansdowne.

On Thursday 18 March, the first annual As-sociation of Muslim Schools (AMS) nationalsoccer tournament will be hosted in CapeTown.

The tournament was hosted in Johannes-burg last year, and involved several Muslimschools in a three-day event.

On the long list of schools are Al Falaah andOrient Muslim schools from Durban, Nasroed-ien Muslim School from Port Elizabeth, Johan-nesburg Muslim School and the Escort MuslimSchool from Kwazulu-Natal. RepresentingCape Town is Darul Islam and Al Azhar Mus-lim schools.

Galant said the tournament, now in its 12year, is hosted by a school in different partsof the country, often forcing their boysto travelin order to participate.

“We are truly looking forward to this experi-ence of hosting such a big event,” Galant add-ed.

Twenty-seven schools will be participatingin seven-a-side clashes. Each team will be in-volved in 12-minute matches.

Nazmie Phillips, a former soccer trainer, isexcited at the prospect of hosting the AMS

championship and said: “Our boys have thechance to represent their city on their ownhome ground, so I just know they will do usproud.”

“Events such as these do not come every day, especially an event of this magnitude, becauseit’s talent coming from all over the country,”says Phillips.

The tournament will be hosted at the Wind-sor High School grounds, and adequate facili-ties are available for all matches.

The weekend will kick off with a Quranic re-cital and lectures from guest speakers at a ban-quet hosted by the convening school on Thurs-day 17 March.

“The main priority is to ensure that we pro-mote sportsmanship and create a fun atmos-phere for theboys to enjoy themselves,”Galantsaid.

On Sunday 20 March, the tournament will beended with an awards presentation in the Isla-mia College Hall.

“Just a quick message to the boys: enjoyyourselves and do everybody cheering you onvery proud,” Phillips said.

Grant urged Cape Town “to come out in theirdroves” to support the players. Refreshmentswill be on sale, with all funds being pumpedback into the school.

For any further information on the AMSchampionship, kindly contact the school on(021) 696-5600/5836.

Over 250 applications for bursaryA RECORD number of 254 applications werereceived for this year’s Imam Abdullah HaronEducation Trust (IAHET) bursaries at the clos-ing date of 25 February.

The bursaries, which are open to all tertiarylevel students irrespective of race, gender orcreed, are worth R5 000 each.

Junaid Daries, head of the IAHET’s educa-tion sub-committee, said the quality and varie-ty of applications will make the task of short-listing candidates and awarding the bursariesvery difficult.

“The number of applications received, which is up significantly from last year’s fig-ure of 176, is both a reflection of the growingprofile of the IAHET, which is now in its fifthyear of operation, as well as a sign of the tough

economic times.“We are happy that so many of our youth are

pursuing tertiary studies and even though thebursary doesn’t cover all their fees, it doesmake a significant contribution to meetingtheir financial commitments.”

Daries pointed out that shortlisted candi-dates will be called to interviews between 26March and 25 April and that successful appli-cants should be notified by the first week ofMay.

“Those applicants who have not been con-tacted by 26 March should accept that their ap-plications were unsuccessful. Because all ourmembers hold full-time jobs we simply don’thave the time or capacity to notify each appli-cant,” he said.

Maternity home ready to deliverCAPE TOWN’s first private, non-profit

maternity home was officiallylaunchedonSunday27February inRonde-bosch East.

Al-Nisa Maternity Home is a midwife-led,women-only facilitywhichoffersholistic ante-natal, birth and postnatal care to women withlow-risk pregnancies.

“We want to provide a supportive environ-ment that establishes the dignity and rever-ence of the birthing process,” says Dr UnwarrAdam, the founder of the home.

“Our care will be provided by skilled mid-wives using best-practice natural birthingmethods beneficial to both the mother and ba-by.”

The concept of a maternity home first tookroot over 30 years ago, when DrAdam ran the obstetric unit in aTranskei hospital.

He noticed a “huge disparity”in the level of service offered bygovernment hospitals comparedto the midwife-driven obstetricsunit run by nuns in other hospi-tals.

“The nuns cared for their pa-tients, protected their modestyand provided a valuable service,”said Dr Adam.

Adam’s own children wereborn in maternity homes such asthese and from this, his dream toestablish a similar facility wasborn.

The Adam family purchasedthe Rokeby Road property in1992, and after licensing and re-zoning was approved, construction eventuallybegan in 2006.

Today, Al-Nisa (which means “The Women”

in Arabic) has eightbeds for antenatal andpostnatal care, two de-livery rooms, two as-sessment rooms and anursery.

The home, designedby Dr Adam’s archi-tect daughter, AdilaAdam, also includes afunctioning kitchenfor use by patientsand a landscapedcourtyard, whichadds to the tranquilli-ty and homeliness ofthe environment.

The hospital also of-fers theservices ofa generalpractition-er, lacta-tion counselling, physiotherapyand ultrasonography.

The Al-Nisa medical team is fur-ther supported by an advisoryteam of consulting doctors, whichincludes a gynaecologist, obstetri-cian and paediatrician.

Adam emphasised that the hos-pital was set up as a not-for-profitfacility which provides a comforta-ble yet affordable service.

Antenatal visits with a midwifeare priced at R100 per visit, whileAl-Nisa’s complete maternity carepackage – which includes five an-tenatal visits, the delivery and two

post-natal visits with the baby – is priced atR5 500.

The institution offers a payment plan for pa-

tients who have booked the complete materni-ty care package.

Strike terrorBELEAGUERED commuters are onceagain getting the short end of the publictransport stick as a citywide taxi strike gotunder way yesterday (Monday).

Members of the SA National Taxi Coun-cil (Santaco) protested about “draconian”traffic laws and the red tape and “sloppi-ness” around the issuing of operating li-cences by provincial government.

Santaco secretary general Philip Taai-bosch says the Western Cape “is the onlyprovince in South Africa where taxi opera-tors are harassed in such a big way”.

Taxi drivers are entitled to protest aboutmatters affecting their livelihoods, butpeacefully so. That the strike turned vio-lent on its first daydisplays ablatant disre-gard for the government’s warning thatSantaco will be held personally responsi-ble for any violence.

Even the National Taxi Alliance’s urg-ing taxi drivers “not do anything and topark the taxis at ranks or at home” fell ondeaf ears.

Many taxi drivers are notoriously reck-less. Their conduct during strikes bearstestimony to their overall lack of regardfor themselves, their passengers and fel-low road users.

They threaten the very commuters whofaithfully support them and rely on themas their only mode of transport from thetownships to work.

Among the alarming incidents reportedsince the strike began: a bread truck wasset alight; vehicles were set alight andstoned by striking drivers; stone-throwingoccurred in Fish Hoek and along Klipfon-tein Road; Golden Arrow buses werestoned on Lansdowne Road.

As with previous taxi strikes, this strikewas characterised on its first day by vio-lence, intimidation, destruction and op-portunistic crime – none of which will gar-ner sympathy or even empathy.

The subtle touches ofThe subtle touches of OranjeOranjeBRIAN GAFFNEY

TWO Dutch legends whose names areprinted in gold in the annals of Neth-

erlands soccer history are close to beingacclaimed heroes – 9 000km from theirnative land.

For Foppe de Haan and his fellow country-men Ruud Krol – the coaches of Ajax CapeTown FC and Orlando respectively – the hon-our of walking the red carpet to the champi-ons’ rostrum in May will be deserved for thetwo seasoned coaches.

Indeed, either of their faces could be mir-rored in the sterling silver trophy that is atstake for the Premier Soccer League champi-ons for the 2010/2011 season.

The destiny of the coveted cup will ofcourse be influenced by the result of the clashbetween Ajax and Pirates at Newlands Stadi-um tomorrow (Wednesday), starting at 19:30.

In the fiercely-contested league champion-ship, pacesetters Pirates – with 50 points inthe bag are a point ahead of Ajax, whileMamelodi Sundowns on 47 points and KaizerChiefs on 46 points are also in the race, after24 matches.

The neck-and-neck tussle prompts De Haanto concede that “nothing less than victory”will serve the Ajax cause.

De Haan’s no-nonsense approach when itcomes to the game has transformed Ajax intoone of the most exciting teams to watch in theleague this season.

His achievements include coaching theNetherlands to the UEFA European under-21champions titles in 2006 and 2007, after serv-ing as the head coach of Heerenveen FC for20 seasons.

And those successful experiences has inev-itably helped De Haan to keep his youngcharges focused on the arduous task ofmatching Pirates – buoyed by a 3-0 first

round win in Johannesburg inOctober.

The rapid development ofplayers like Thulani Serero,Khama Billiat, SameehgDoutie, Sonwabile Lolo andGranwald Scott has markedAjax’s progress thus far.

Soweto-born Serero (21) andBilliat (21) from Zimbabwe(21) have each scored vitalgoals, while the pacy Doutie(22) is enjoying his best seasonsince joining Ajax at age 17.

Their efficiency is matchedby Kensington-born midfield-er Scott and defender Lolo, whom Ajax nabbed from Afri-can Tribes amateurs in Khay-elitsha.

The efforts of Tembinkosi“Terror” Fanteni and Sereroto hit the target 11 and eighttimes respectively this seasonalso augurs well for the match.

The not-so-good news for DeHaan is that the suspendedDoutie will miss the crucialshowdown.

And Krol? the Pirates men-tor was capped 83 times for theNetherlands and representedthe Dutch in two World Cups.

He was also a member of the

star-studded Ajax-Amsterdam FC side thatwon the European Cup for three consecutiveyears (1971-1973) – missing out on the 1971 fi-nal due to a fractured leg.

Notably in his heyday the versatile Krolcould be depended on to play in all defensiveand midfield positions for club and country.

So no wonder Pirates boasts one of the bestdefensive records in the league this sea-son – thanks mainly to Krol’s coaxing of de-fensive midfielder Andile Jali (21) and left-back Reuben Cloete into tough ball winners.

Pirates have scored 34 times and conceded16 goals while Ajax, on the other hand, havehit the target 36 times but have conceded 24goals.

This of course is a worry for De Haan andgoalkeeper Hans Vonk – his custodian atHeerenveen FC for several years before hemoves Ajax Amsterdam FC and their CapeTown namesakes.

But De Haan showed his hand when the

long-serving flank defenders Brett Evans andNazeer Allie – who were sidelined with leg in-juries for several weeks – returned to theteam that lost 2-1 to Free State Stars in theNedbank Cup knockout championship overthe weekend.

The possible inclusion of both flank defend-ers with the centre back duo of Derek Des-camp and Clayton Daniels could be De Haan’sploy to snuff out Pirates’ free-scoring KatlegoMashego, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and TiouSegolele.

Pirates, since the inception of the PSL in1995, have been crowned champions in2001/02 and 2002/03, while placing second in2004/05, 2005/06 and 2008/09.
