SURREY ESTATE
Robbers killedin shootout
TAMMY PETERSEN
The case against four men charged with therobbery of a store in Surrey Estate which re-sulted in a bloody shoot-out with police lastweek Monday, has been postponed.
The suspects are alleged to have been partof a gang of robbers who held up the Prim-roseMarkette. Three gunmenwere killed ina battle with police as they attempted to fleethe scene.
The four, aged between 32 and 39, ap-peared in the AthloneMagistrate’s Court onThursday. They face charges of murder, at-tempted murder and armed robbery.
Robbers attempted to escape with R20 000from the Surrey Estate business when theywere met by a police convoy at about 21:00last Monday night. Officers had been follow-ing the vehicle the suspects were travellingin as it was reported stolen.
“A shoot-out straight out of themovies fol-lowed,” a witness said. “The robbers fired
first, and the police hit back. It was mad-ness.”
Three of the suspects died in the shoot-out,while a policeman and a customer were hitas shots rang out at the corner of Orion andRuimte roads.
The customer who was waiting in her carwhen she was caught in the crossfire, is re-covering in hospital. The woman was shottwice in the arm and twice in the legs afterbeing accosted by the robbers. She had beenwaiting in the parked car for her passengerwhen she was told to get out of the vehicleby a gunman.
Awarrant officer hit in the shoot-out is al-so reportedly recovering in hospital.
SurreyEstate residents said theywere rat-tled that such a violent incident had takenplace so close to home.
Residents say they initially thought theshots being fired were coming from gang-ridden Manenberg, situated about one kilo-metre away.
“We are used to hearing the gunshots, butI toldmy husband it soundedmuch too closeto be the gangsters wreaking havoc again,”an elderly local said.
“It sounded like Guy Fawkes, or those vio-lent TV games my grandchildren play. Allyou heard was ‘bang, bang, bang, bang, bang! I was terrified.
“It’s so upsetting to think that I could havepopped into the shop when the skolliesstruck.”
Another resident said that while they areno strangers to property-related crime,“shoot-outs are definitely not the normhere”.
Petrol attendants whowork at the fuel sta-tion next to the store said they were in con-stant fear at their workplace, as a numberof robberies have taken place at the cornerof Ruimte and Orion roads.
Primrose Markette owner Siraj Parkersaid his wife, who had been at the store atthe time of the robbery, was “completely
traumatised” by the incident. This is thethird time that his store has been hit.
“I am just relieved that my staff and mywife are okay. No amount of money is worthsomeone’s life,” he said.
Parker opened his store at the corner ofOrion and Ruimte Roads 25 years ago andinsists he has no intention of moving.
“The sad reality is that you can be hit any-where. You aren’t even safe in a shoppingmall,” he pointed out.
“I am part of this community. My custom-ers are more than just people who buy fromme. I will stay here, where I have alwaysbeen.”
Two firearms – an R5 assault rifle and a9mm Beretta – were seized on the scene, aswell as two hijacked vehicles. The incidentis being investigated by the Independent Po-lice Investigative Directorate.
The case has been postponed to Wednes-day 17 June for legal representation.– News24

App helps you talk over the wallTIYESE JERANJI
@jeranji
Life is really too short to have towait for information or to talk toyour neighbours. This is what the developer of theOurHood app, Bruce Good, be-lieves. OurHood was founded byGood and Will Mellor, who arebased in Woodstock. This state-of-the-art applicationand website help residents to con-nect with their neighbours imme-diately, in real time. The idea behind this was to getpeople involved with their neigh-bours and give them the ability tocommunicate in a faster way. Hesays the app makes it easy to gethelp quickly – be it if your dog hasgone missing or you just want toborrow a ladder from someone inyour neighbourhood or to find outthe load shedding schedule in yourarea.Good says it will help neigh-bours share different kinds of in-formation to help improve theirneighbourhoods and make themsafe.“Our aim was to fight crime.Thiswill allow for saferneighbour-hoods as people can get assistancein the blink of an eye, as they areable to communicate in real time. This will allow them to sharethings and get to know their neigh-bourhood and their neighbourseven better because the more peo-ple talk they will be closer to eachother,” he says.
The app has a very strict verifi-cation process for registration. This will allow people in the neigh-bourhoods to connect much easierand not allow people who don’t be-long in the same neighbourhood.Instead of posting a notice in ashopping mall, this new sophisti-cated app gives space for it and alsohas a section for important num-bers.People can report crime, neigh-bours can buy and sell items, andshare events happening in their ar-ea.“Everything is just one clickaway. We are also promoting thespirit of sharing. If you want to gocamping but don’t have a campingmattress and someone in the areahas it, you can just post on thereand someonewill help youquickly.Thewhole idea is to connect neigh-bourhoods and promote safer com-munities. When people interactthey will be safer communities,”says Good.Since the app was launched lastyear more than 800 neighbour-hoods in South Africa have startedusing it.“People like it because they canreach each other cheaply andquickly. People are so amazed by itand it has unlocked new possibili-ties that they didn’t know abouttheir neighbourhoods,” he says.Adrian Good, ADT general man-ager, fully supports the OurHoodapp and is excited to be part of it.“Wedecided to get behind this in-itiative because we recognise the
value in real time connection. Inthis day and age it’s crucial thatweknow and trust the people we seedaily.
“Having a platform that allows forconstructive communicationwhile promoting a safe and secureneighbourhood is advantageous to
all,” says Good.V The app is free and can be downloadedat www.ourhood.co.za, on the Apple storeor Google Play store.
Bruce Good, co-founder and managing director of the locally made OurHood app, which connects neighbours.

TECHNOLOGY
SmartphonesunlockedTIYESE JERANJI
@jeranji
Phones have become an essential partof our daily lives. With technology advancing every day,
some are also working tirelessly to en-sure that no-one is left out of this worldof ever-evolving technology.Vodacom, in partnership with the
Cape Town Society of the Blind (CTSB)in Salt River, created a unique kiosk tobring the benefits of the latest smart-phones to the blind. The kiosk, launched on Tuesday last
week, will be operated by CTSB stafftrained to demonstrate the advantages oftext-to-speech software on the latesttouchscreen phones. The CTSB will also benefit financially
from the sale of starter packs, M-pesaand airtime at the kiosk. The text-to-speech function makes it
easier for visually impaired people tocommunicate using their smartphones. It is nowbuilt into the phone, making lifemuch easier for users.Visually impaired Michelle Botha (27)
uses an iPhone 5 and says this initiativeis great because, nowadays, communica-tion doesn’t happen verbally anymore.“Weare able to connect and checkwhat’shappening on social media. Gone are thedays when we used to ask someone toreada text forus.Nowwehaveourpriva-cy and we can make use of the speechfunction to listen to themessages thatweget as well as to respond,” she says. While using a smartphone when visu-
ally impaired isn’t a walk in the park,Botha says the most important thing isto play with a phone and get to know it.“It’s just like any other flatscreen
phone that anyone can use. But we haveto know the icons so that it will be easyto use the phone. But the speech texts re-ally help a lot,” she says.Lizelle van Wyk, CEO of CTSB, says
this is a great milestone that they have
been waiting years for.“What we like most about these
phones is that the visually impaired arefreed from being dependent. Pupils educatedon bullyingTIYESE JERANJI
@jeranji
Pupils at Sunderland Primary School inKensington recently heard Beverly Da-
vids talk about the importance of speakingout about bullying.Davids is the founder of the Chauncey’s
Epic anti-bullying club which was formedto help pupils, teachers and the communityas a whole. She says this topic is oftenneglected, lead-
ing to victims of bullying committing sui-cide as there is no-one to help or listen tothem. The aim of her awareness campaignis to educate pupils about the effects bully-ing has on the victims, their families, lovedones and friends. She encourages pupils to speak out. She
urges pupils to inform three people immedi-ately if they are being bullied. These threepeople are the teachers, the principal, andthen the parents. She adds that this willhelp to make sure that someone who is be-ing bullied is helped faster.“This is a serious problem that has to be
dealt with. Parents must learn to talk totheir kids. Many times parents are workingand they come home tired and stressed out;they don’t even have time to talk to theirkids and hear if there is anything botheringthem. This leads to kids suffering in silence.“I’m glad that I’m doingmy bit to educate
people on the dangers of bullying. If I canchange one mind then my job at that placeis done,” she says. The idea of this anti-bullying campaign
came about after Davids’s son was bulliedin Grade 7. She says she watched her childsuffer and change in front of her eyes while
he suffered severe bullying at his school.Despite reporting the bullying, no-onecould help her or her son with the matter.“He was beaten on the ground to the ex-
tent that his lip was torn. I remember howhewas picked up by the collar by the police.No-one stood up for my child, no-one couldprotect him. That pained me a lot. At everydoor that I turned to no-one could help myson – to the extent that I had to take himand his sister out of school,” Davids says. Now her job is to be an ear and help those
that are bullied to deal with it. She alsowants to tell people tobeawareofhowbully-ing starts.Since Chauncey’s Epic anti-bullying club
started, Davids has spread her message at12 schools around Cape Town.In a statement, Debbie Schaffer, provin-
cial minister for education, says it saddensher that bullying is a real issue in many ofour schools. Thedepartment viewsbullyingin a very serious light. The Safe Schools call centre received 45
calls about bullying last year, and nine sofar this year.“Unfortunately, many cases of bullying
go unreported and the education depart-ment is therefore not able to intervene. Itherefore urge parents and pupils to reportany form of bullying immediately to theirclass teacher, school principal or to the SafeSchools hotline, so that we can respond.“The Safe Schools hotline is available to
schools, teachers, parents and pupils to re-port all school crime and abuse, and aimsto contribute to a safe and crime-free schoolenvironment,” she says.V The Safe Schools call centre can be reached at0800 45 46 47.

WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION:ATHLONE AND RYLANDSTuesday 23 June 2015
The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be completing a zeropressure test on the water supply feeding the water supply zone in Athlone and Rylands onThursday 18 June 2015.
This process will result in the disruption of the water supply to the Athlone and Rylands areasbounded by the N2, the Cape Flats railway line, Turhall Road, Jakes Gerwel Drive, KlipfonteinRoad and Jan Smuts Road from 22:00 until 04:00 the following morning.
Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimaldisruption to the water supply in the affected areas.
The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smallerand much more manageable sections of the large network for purposes of maintenanceand upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and willsignificantly reduce the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses.
Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers for domestic use during thisperiod.
The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

City brews picturesque kickNICOLE MCCAIN

Cape Town and coffee have more in com-mon than providing enjoyment to on-
trend hipsters it seems. This as the Mother City is crowned the
darling of global coffee culture as the desti-nation features in a bi-annual magazine re-leased by luxury coffee brand Nespresso.Joining 12 other world-renowned destina-
tions, Cape Town is oncemore in theworld’sspotlight through the magazine’s editorialspread of places to visit, eat and, of course, drink coffee in the city.
Cape coffee cultureCapeTown, as the firstAfrican city to ever
feature in themagazine, was a natural fit forthe brand, explainsPierreDebayle,Nespres-so Middle East, Africa and Caribbean re-gional manager.“A lot of thought goes into the selection of
the featured city in each edition ofNespressoMagazine. Cape Town was a natural fit forNespresso. With its strong heritage, the cityhas managed to create its own identity andcultivate a culture aligned to a global audi-ence,” he says. But don’t let the hipsters fool you, enjoy-
ing coffee is an age-old tradition in SouthAf-rica due to our many European influences,Debayle says.Immigrants from Portugal, France, Italy
and theNetherlands have all shaped our cof-
fee culture, whichhas blendedwith themod-ern trend of restaurants brewing their owncoffee. The city boasts a range of coffee styles,
each with meanings and messages, BelindaWalker, mayoral committee member forcommunity services and special projects, ex-plained at the magazine launch.“Cape Town has slave coffee, as seen at
Truth coffee shop at the Prestwich memori-al, ethical coffee where shops source androast their own beans, and steam punk cof-fee,” she says.
Developing marketsAlthough Cape Town’s mountain, sea and
vineyards make it a prime destination, theattraction lies in the mix of cultures and thelocal energy to explore new trends, from de-sign to music to food, Debayle believes.SouthAfrica is a steadily growingmarket,
as luxury brands and quality coffee becomemore accessible to a range of race and classgroups, Debayle says.“We’rewidening our target group because
coffee culture is expanding. We’re embrac-ing the diversity of the market.”This includes a variety of coffees aimed at
new palates, which move away from the tra-ditionally strong and black coffee, Debaylesays.“Quality of life is very important to South
Africans. Quality coffeewith good conversa-tions is important,” he says. The future of coffee lies innot just growing
localmarkets, but in sustainable and ethicalfarming, Dabayle says. This is why the brand has made a choice
to take care of the entire production chain, from the coffee fields to drinkers.“We only buy the best beans,” he says.
“Only 10%of that amount goes towardsmak-ing our gourmet coffee. Our engineers havecompiled best practice guides, which weshare with our farmers.”The brand pays premium rates for coffee,
but also works on projects to improve the
lives of coffee farmers. As an example of this, the company recently instituted a pensionscheme for farmers in Columbia, Debaylesays. This responsibly behaviour has filtered
through to the consumer level, with eachcof-fee pod made out of aluminium, which is95% recyclable. And the pods can be handed in at any of
the over 400 Nespresso boutique storesaround the world to be sent for recycling.
A taste of Cape TownThe magazine is distributed to over one
millionNespressoClubmembersworldwidein almost 60 countries. This kindof exposurewill earnCapeTown
a big tourism boost, Debayle believes.“Our clients travel regularly and thismag-
azine is fantastic exposure for Cape Town. The content reflects a selection of local clubmembers who provide a guide of the city. They give our readers the secrets of the city, not just the popular tourist spots,” he says. And for those looking for a taste of the
Mother City, Debayle already has herpegged.“Cape Town is a cappuccino with intense
espresso flavours, made from an India blendwith notes of spices like nutmeg and blackpepper. The milk foam needs to be there torepresent the fog that sometimes rolls in offthe sea and there is a touch of African cocoaon top. And it should be drunk in a tall glass,to get you through the coldwinters,” he says.
Coffee was given a Cape Town flavour whenthe city was chosen to feature in Nespresso’sglobal magazine.

Dancers show off for pupsA group of local dancers and artists will
come together on stage to raise funds foranimal sterilisation in the Western Cape.
They will perform in Dancers love dogs atthe Artscape Opera House on Saturday.
Brigitte Reeve-Taylor started the annualshow and Dancers Love Dogs (DLD) organi-sation in 2012 as a “random act of kindness”and has since brought hundreds of dancerstogether to help furry lives.
Since its inception, the not-for-profit orga-nisation has raised over R1m to foot the billof sterilising about 6500 animals.
The journey began when Reeve-Taylorrescued a puppy alongside a busy highwayand discovered, on her journey to find helpfor the animal, the miserable existence that
homeless animals endure on the streets ofCape Town and its communities.
Sterilisations, over time, make an enor-mous difference in reducing the number ofstrays and unwanted dogs in our society.
The money raised by DLD also financiallyhelps dog owners who want to sterilise theirpets but find the cost too high.
Line-upThis year’s show will be hosted by Bren-
dan van Rhyn, who starred as Frank-n-Fur-ter in the Fugard Theatre’s recent producti-on of The Rocky horror show.
The rest of the line-up includes Cape TownCity Ballet, Cape Junior Ballet, Zama, Vad-hini Indian Arts Academy, Ashley and Brad-
ley Searle, the EOAN Group, Art in Motionfrom Johannesburg and Ananada Fuchs, amongst many others. There will also bespecial appearances by the SA Guide DogsAssociation as well as Bob, the “Frenchie”from SABC3’s Expresso show.
TicketsTickets for the show cost R250, which
equals the cost of two-thirds of one sterilisa-tion, and are available at Computicket. Visitwww.dancerslovedogs.weebly.com for moreinformation.V Sponsors are needed to donate prizes for the luckydraw.
