Most patients are aware of their Pharmacist. They are the nice men and women who standbehind the counter and help you get the medicineyou need to stay healthy. Sometimes they wear awhite coat. Most of the time this is what a Pharmacist does, but your Peoples Pharmacist cando so much more. There aremany behind the scenes activi-ties that you never see or hearabout. Let's take a look at whata pharmacist really does all day.A pharmacist just puts pills in

bottles all day, right? That usedto be the case about twentyyears ago. Now much of thatwork is handled by technicians or even technol-ogy. Your Peoples Drug Mart Pharmacist of todaycan be much more active in the management ofyour health. Many have specialized knowledge incertain areas of health care. Some pharmacistsfocus only on patient counselling and answeringquestions. They have also been known to get outfrom behind the counter to give community lec-tures and vaccination services. Your local PeoplesPharmacist is capable of so much.I can’t think of any Peoples Pharmacists who

don't take a personal interest in the health of theirpatients. This is why we keep up to date on thelatest drug and disease information. This may in-clude reading medical and pharmacy journals, at-

tending lectures, completing home study coursesor attending health related conferences. Further-more, many Peoples Pharmacists have obtainedspecialized training in various aspects of healthcare. Some may be diabetes or asthma educators.Others may have extra knowledge about vitamins

and herbal products. If youhave any questions about yourhealth or the medications youare taking, ask your PeoplesPharmacist. You may be sur-prised by how much theyknow.

People often forget thatPharmacists are the experts

when it comes to over the counter medications.Whenever you have a cold/flu, minor aches andpains or other minor health problems, your Peo-ples Pharmacist is the most accessible health careprofessional. If you ever need information aboutthe various pain relievers or cold medications, askyour pharmacist. They can help you avoid prod-ucts that may interfere with any medications youare taking, or medical conditions you may have. Ifyou have any questions about wound care, askyour pharmacist. Need a cane, crutch or kneebrace, ask your Pharmacist. Do you have anyminor skin, eye or ear problems, ask your pharma-cist. There are many health care products in the

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory boweldisease (IBD) that can damage the lining of any partof the digestive system, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, or anus. This inflammatory disease mostoften affects the small intes-tine, especially a portionknown as the terminal ileum.More than 110,000 people

in Canada are affected byCrohn's disease. Crohn's dis-ease can affect people of anyage, and it is usually diag-nosed when people are be-tween 15 to 25 years old or45 to 55 years old. The dis-ease can have a devastatingimpact on people's lives.Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel

disease (IBD) that affects the lining of the colon(large intestine). Ulcerative colitis is known as an in-flammatory disease because it causes inflammation, sores, bleeding, and scarring of the inner walls ofthe colon. The inflammation usually starts near therectum and continues up the colon. The inflamma-tion involves continuous areas of the wall ratherthan small patches. What are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis?Your digestive system helps you digest food and

eliminate solid waste from your body. It includes

your mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and largeintestines, rectum, and anus. Figure 1 shows thedifferent parts of the digestive system."Crohn's and colitis," also known as inflammatorybowel disease (IBD), is a medical term that de-

scribes two separate diseasesaffecting the digestive sys-tem: • Crohn's disease• Ulcerative colitisBoth Crohn's disease and ul-cerative colitis damage thelining of the digestive systemby causing inflammation, sores, bleeding, and scarring. This can lead to painful, em-barrassing symptoms, such asabdominal pain and cramps

and diarrhea (which may be bloody). Other symp-toms can include loss of appetite, malnutrition, andweight loss. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitiscan also cause symptoms outside of the digestivesystem, such as fatigue, fever, mouth ulcers, skinrashes, eye inflammation, or joint pain.Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis have many

symptoms in common, but they are separate med-ical conditions. So what's the difference betweenCrohn's disease and ulcerative colitis?• Crohn's disease can affect any part of the diges-tive system, while ulcerative colitis affects only the

Medication non-compliance accounts for approximately25% of all hospital admissions among seniors

Talk to your Peoples Pharmacist about the convenientand safe Med Manager program

Many people today are on more than one medication, and when you combinethis with a busy and active life, it can lead to the confusion of properly taking yourmedications. Medication non-compliance is a serious concern and can be harmfulto your health and wellness.

Peoples Drug Mart offers a medication compliance program called “MedManager.” The Med Manager is a medication compliance card that conve-

niently organizes your medications for a full week, and helps you easilyidentify what medications are to be taken at what time of the day.Be safe, take the guesswork out of your daily medications.

colon (large intestine).• The inflammation caused by Crohn's disease canpenetrate deep into the walls of the bowel tissue.Ulcerative colitis tends to affect a single layer of thebowel wall (inner lining).• Crohn's disease inflammation tends to occur inpatches throughout the digestive system, while ul-cerative colitis inflammation tends to affect a con-tinuous area of the colon, usually starting from therectum and moving up through the colon.• Although Crohn's disease can be effectively man-aged with medications, it cannot be cured. Ulcera-tive colitis can be controlled with medications or canbe cured surgically by removing the colon.• Both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are life-long conditions that can have a serious effect onyour life. These conditions are unpredictable - peo-ple with Crohn's disease and/or ulcerative colitishave attacks (also called "flare-ups") followed by pe-riods of "remission" when the symptoms go away.During a flare-up, you may be unable to work or doyour usual activities because of debilitating symp-toms. You may end up in the hospital or require sur-gery. All of these things can take a toll on you andyour life.

Treating Crohn's disease: What to expect fromyour treatmentCrohn's disease is unpredictable. People with

Crohn's disease experience flare-ups of symptoms, also called attacks (or relapses if they happen morethan once), followed by long periods of time, oftenweeks to years, when the symptoms go away, alsocalled remissions. Flare-ups can cause you to fre-quently miss work, meals (which can have a nega-tive impact on your nutrition), sleep, or time withyour family and friends, and even end up in the hos-pital.Because the effects of Crohn's disease vary from

person to person, treatment goals may also vary.Talk to your gastroenterologist about your personaltreatment goals and creating a treatment plan. Seeyour doctor regularly so you can track your progress.Treatment for Crohn's disease involves nutritionaltherapy (to prevent malnutrition that can occur),medications, and possibly surgery. In general,Crohn's disease treatment aims to:• bring your disease under control (relieve symp-toms and reduce the frequency of flare-ups)• improve your quality of life and help you live anormal, active life

• prevent and treat complications, such as malnutri-tion, osteoporosis (thin, brittle bones), and bloodclots in the legs, since people with Crohn's diseasemay be at increased risk for these complicationsIt's important to ask yourself, "Is my Crohn's dis-

ease as well controlled as it could be?" If yourCrohn's disease is not well controlled, talk to yourgastroenterologist about the treatment options avail-able to you.Medications have a variety of roles in treating

Crohn's disease. Depending on the medication, therole may be to:• relieve symptoms during a flare-up• keep the condition in remission• control the disease itself, not just the signs andsymptomsEveryone's experience with Crohn's disease is

slightly different. But you can take control by work-ing with your doctor to find a treatment that's rightfor you. This can help relieve your symptoms and re-duce the number of flare-ups, thus providing longperiods of remission. Can I expect a cure for Ulcerative colitis?Ulcerative colitis can be cured by surgically remov-

ing the colon. However, surgery is not for everyone, and is usually reserved for severe cases.Surgery comes with risks, and after surgery you

may have a pouch inside your body to collect wasteand that needs to be emptied via a valve that leadsto the outside of your body, or you may need towear a bag outside the body to collect solid waste. What else can I expect from treatment? Because the effects of ulcerative colitis vary from

person to person, treatment goals may also vary. Talkto your gastroenterologist about your personal treat-

ment goals and creating a treatment plan. Treat-ment for ulcerative colitis involves nutritional ther-apy (to prevent malnutrition that can occur),medications, and possibly surgery. In general, ulcerative colitis treatment aims to:• bring your disease under control (relieve symp-toms and reduce the frequency of attacks)• improve your quality of life and help you live anormal, active life• treat complications such as malnutrition, osteo-porosis, and blood clots in the legs, since peoplewith ulcerative colitis may be at increased risk forthese complicationsYour doctor will work with you to find the treat-

ment options that best meet your needs. Factorsyour doctor will consider when recommending atreatment include:• which parts of the digestive system are affected• how severe your symptoms are and how they areaffecting your quality of life• which treatments you have tried in the pastMedications have a variety of roles in treating ul-

cerative colitis. Depending on the medication, therole may be to:• relieve symptoms during a flare-up• keep the condition in remission• treat or prevent complications of ulcerative colitis• control the disease itself, not just the signs andsymptoms. If you think you might have Crohn's disease or ulcer-

ative colitis, or if you're living with one of these condi-tions and you have questions, talk to your doctor.

is medication compounding. This has always beenthe job of the Pharmacist, but today the complexityand range of compounds available are staggering. If you have allergies to gluten or lactose, yourcompounding pharmacist can make you a product without these ingredients. Many petmedications can also be prepared, often with yourpet's favourite flavours. During amedication review, your Peoples Pharmacist makesthe time to answer all of your pressing health re-lated questions. They will also ask questions aboutany vitamins, over the counter products or othersupplements you might be taking. Many timesyour Peoples Pharmacist can find solutions tomedication issues that you and your doctor mightnot have even been aware of. If you have ques-tions or concerns, ask your pharmacist about hav-ing a medication review.Something you might also not be aware of is

that your local pharmacist might be able to refillyour prescriptions without you having to visitingyour doctor. In February 2008, the provincial government acknowledged that pharmacists playan important role in the managing of patients

Vitamin D is well known for theimportant role it plays in helping the body to absorbcalcium as well as maintaining strong bones to preventosteoporosis. New studies show that Vitamin D may alsobe effective in helping reduce the risk of certain cancersby almost 60 percent.

Evidence suggests that the current Vitamin D recom-mendations — 200 to 600 IU per day, depending onage — are too low. Many researchers now advise in-creasing daily Vitamin D intake to 1,000 IU. Talk to aPeoples Pharmacist about the benefits of Vitamin D.

SLEEP WELL>Sleep deprivation is a quiet epidemic that intersects withsociology, psychology and physiology. A by product of modern living, sleep deficiency is a symptom of living in a fastpaced society that values being able to squeak out everyminute in a 24-hour cycle. We admire productivity and thosewho have the stamina to seemingly survive on less than 8hours of sleep. Often, the sleep deprived will embrace caffeineand other stimulants, wearing their daily dose as a badge ofhonor. We rarely connect the dots when this strain of superhuman individual has a physical or psychological setback. Energy drinks and sleeping aids are top sellers in today’s marketbut these crutches are not cures. Sleep deprivation is both asymptom of a body being out of balance with the natural rhythmof life and a contributing risk factor for illness and disease.

Studies suggest lack of sleep is more common for adoles-cents and those on the younger side of middle age but nosingle age group is immune. Show me a parent today whois not sleep deprived from trying to balance work, family andplay. Maternity leave is the most humane thing our societyhas invented and I can’t emphasize enough to young parentsthe need to rest when you can during these months. Beforeyou know it, the infant is an active toddler with a newfoundsense of self and independence that ramps up around naptime and bedtime. Parental reserves are often drained by theend of the day but it is worth the effort to instil good sleephabits early in life, as the payoff later is enormous.

Teenage years can be challenging from the parental perspec-tive but we also have to embrace empathy for the developingteen. These individuals are growing up in a rapidly changing society that expects a lot from them. They have early schoolstarts, homework, social activities, family obligations, work andscreen time competing for their waking hours. Add into themix the changing body chemistry and the physiological needfor more sleep (not less) and it is no wonder that a minor setback can set the tone for a teenage apocalyptic outburst.

By the time we reach adulthood, sleep deprivation has oftenbecome the norm. We are conditioned to dance the dance ofOgive to others before yourselfR and thus much of the

population is showing up to work foggy brained and halfasleep. Is it any wonder that there is a coffee shop on everystreet corner? If any of this sounds familiar, perhaps it is timeto switch to a slower gear and make optimal health a priority. The first step begins with awareness. Try some of these tips towork toward a better night’s slumber:1. Kick caffeine and other stimulants to the curb (especiallyafter lunch). They only give you a false sense of energy and inthe long run they can elevate your stress hormones, whichmake it hard to fall asleep at night. Be aware that while alcohol can initially relax you, it interferes with the naturalsleep cycle. Consume alcohol early in the evening and giveyour body a chance to process it before bedtime.2. Plan a short 10 P 20 minute nap into your afternoon. Napping has been shown to improve performance on bothphysical and cognitive levels. If you find it hard to sleep during the day then spend the time with eyes closed in a meditative state. 3. Ease into a relaxation. Turn off all screens 2 hours beforebedtime and relax into a hot bath or a good book. Do somegentle yoga. Set the tone with mellow music and turn thelights down low. See the evening as a transition to slumberrather than a continuation of the hectic pace of the day. 4. Moderate daily exercise has been shown to contribute toa sounder sleep. Some people find that exertion in theevening hours can be too stimulating and counter effectiveso find a time for exercise that works best for your psycheand schedule.

As I ease into the lukewarm water of my elder years, I findgreat irony that the other side of the empty nest has comewith its own set of sleep challenges. When the time finallycame that I could actually sleep with both eyes closed, thehormonal flux of menopause had its own agenda. How Ilong to have the deep slumber of a newborn once again!Sometimes you just have to have a good laugh and remember that this too shall pass.
