DESCRIPTION

The People's College, Adult Education Association, is a voluntary body with the status of charitable organisation. Set up 1948, to provide workers' education, it continues to provide general adult education - languages, social political studies, literature, art appreciation and cultural activities as well as personal development and communication skills - for trade unionists, their families and the general public. The College is part of the European Workers’ Education movement which emphasises education for democracy. This involves creating a space where workers can study, reflect on and react to their continually changing society as well as develop their intellectual, social and creative potential. An integral part of the system is the active participation of the students in the decision-making process and organisational structures of the College. “The working class must be free, not only economically, but intellectually”- Jim Larkin 1914

ENGLISH LITERATURE:FOUR DYSTOPIAN NOVELS – UTOPIAS AND DYSTOPIASTutor: Stephen O’Kane BA (Hons), DipM

In 1516 Sir Thomas More wrote a great work called Utopia about abeautiful nowhere land. He invented the word, taking the root of threeGreek words for ‘good’, ‘no’ and ‘place’ and combining them to form anew word giving the idea of a place or state of perfection which doesn’tactually exist.

In 1868 John Stuart Mill coined the word dystopia as the antithesis ofMore’s paradise, literally ‘a bad place’. Today the term ‘dystopian’ is oftenused to label a whole genre of literary and cinematic works which extendsome dangerous aspect of today’s society to its unacceptable, naturalconclusion. Oceania in Orwell’s 1984 and the Earth in the movie Planet ofthe Apes (1968) - based on Pierre Boule’s novel Monkey Planet (1963) - areperfect examples of dystopias.

Dystopian novels are reactions to, and criticisms of, contemporary socialstructures and trends and they are, therefore, not really about tomorrow, but about today. We will look at how society is portrayed in fourdystopian novels. Interestingly, all four novels end with open-endedconclusions and a feeling of incompleteness. Each author leaves the readerto imagine their own ending and interpret the meaning of the novel forthemselves. Resolution is not always a feature of the dystopian novel.

The set textsOnce again our course involves exploring a subject through the mediumof some great and timeless classic novels. They are

Hard Times by Charles DickensThe Time Machine by H. G. WellsBrave New World by Aldous HuxleyThe Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Dystopian stories hold a curious fascination for the modern imaginationand we will be discussing this fascination in class.
