All Saints’ Observance:
As part of our regular Sunday Worship on November 03, we will observe moments of
remembrance for those of our Church Family who have joined the Church Triumphant in the past
year. The impetus for this observance comes from the Memorial Committee and, with
concurrence from the Worship Committee and Session, we will make this an annual observance.

welcome to join the study, which meets in the Café area each Sunday at 9:30 A.M.

A thought for Stewardship Season:
“One of the dangers of having a lot of money is that you may be quite satisfied with the kinds of happiness money can give and so fail to realize your need for God. If everything seems to come simply by signing checks, you may forget that you are at every moment totally dependent on God.” C.S. Lewis
New Members received by Session:
Welcome our newest members, Al and Jeane Lind, received by Reaffirmation of Faith; and Lloyd
Lockwood, Presbyterian from Salina, Kansas, received as Affiliate Member.
Results of the Meeting of the Congregation
The Fall Meeting of the Congregation was held on Sunday, October 20, following the 11:00
Worship Service. The Church Officer Nominating Committee, with Session concurrence,
offered the following recommendation: that the number of Ruling Elders elected to serve on
Session be reduced to 18, in three classes of 6 each, beginning with the Class of 2015. The
recommendation passed.
The Church Officer Nominating Committee offered nominations to the Class of 2016 as follows:
1. Veronika Camehl
2. Sara Craven
3. Ingrid Little
4. Matt Meyers
How you see things: A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held
up a sign which said, “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walk-
ing by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign,
turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would
see the new words. Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind
boy That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how tings were. The boy recog-
nized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you
write? “ The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way. I wrote: Today is a beauti-
ful day, but I cannot see it.” Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was
blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the
second sign was more effective?
Moral of the story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and posi-
tively. When life gives you 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1,000 reasons to smile. Face your past without
regret. Handle your resentment with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the

“It’s all about giving thanks as we fellowship….” which is the theme for this November’s luncheon. The Fellowship Committee is furnishing ham and asks the congregation to bring a favorite side-dish or dessert to share. Come and enjoy great food, fun and fellowship in the Fellowship
Hall on NOVEMBER 10 (the 2nd Sunday in November) after the 11 o’clock Morning Worship Service. Editor’s Note: Did you know the Fellowship Committee is comprised of an “all volunteer” board? Next time you see the following ladies, take a moment to thank them for their hard work, dedication and willingness to serve … remember the theme topic: “It’s all about giving thanks as we fellowship” let’s start with thanking: Sandy Booth, Veronika Camehl, Kelly McNeely, Kay Patteson, Amanda Schuler, Jo Smith, VeeAnn Wright and Darline Yeoman.
NEWS FROM THE
A little girl ran up to her Grandfather, jumped into his arms and gave him a big hug. Then
she ran her finger along his balding head and down the sides of his wrinkled face. “Did
God make you Grandpa?” she asked. “Yes, Honey, he made me.” She felt her own cheek
and then asked, “Did God make me, too?” “Yes, Honey , He made you too.” “Well,” she
shrugged, “Don’t you think He’s doing a better job now than He used to.?”

Have you heard about the
“2013 Qualified Charitable Distribution?”
IRA qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) permit an IRA owner and IRA beneficiaries age 70-1/2
to contribute up to $100,000 of IRA assets per year tax-free to qualifying charities. The American
Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA 2012) has extended QCDs for two years (ie: 2012 and 2013. )
This provision had previously expired after December 31, 2011.
Be aware, the IRA Holder’s responsibilities include: (a) making sure the charity is an eligible charity;
(b) making sure to receive a receipt from the donor charity and (c) correctly reporting the QCD on
your 2013 tax return.
With a QCD members can pay during tax year 2013: the balance on their 2013 pledge and pre-pay
a 2014 pledge - provided the distribution is received by the charity on or before December 31,
2013.
From the Operations Committee -
Pledging for 2013 is underway! The Pledge Lock Box
and Pledge cards have been pulled out of storage and placed in the vestibule alcove next to the American
Flag made by Odyssey children (see picture.) Watch
the mail for your Pledge card and copy of your 2013 Pledge or Contribution Record. (The giving record is
provided for informational purposes only, First Presbyterian Church does not bill for Pledge
balances. )
Pledges can be made using the Pledge cards or emailing the Church Lady, Beverly, at [email protected]….NOTICE the change in the address.

We welcome back to our Winter Texans..... we have missed you and are happy that you are back with us!!!!!
We continue to marvel at our music director/organist Yvonne Jaggard, as she fulfills her obligations so eloquently. She and her family stay in our prayers at this most difficult time. We are ever so grateful for the addition of two new staff persons: Merlene Flourney, is the pianist for the 8:30 Morning Worship Service and provides accompaniment for choir rehearsals on Wednesday evenings. Merlene is currently the ACISD middle and high school choir’s piano accompanist (working with Yvonne Jaggard) and also maintains a private piano studio in Rockport. Sonja Evans, filled a new position for an assistant nursery attendant aiding Annette Ledbetter. Charlie's sermons continue to lead us to a deeper and more meaningful relationship with our Lord. His time with the “Younger Disciples” always proves to be a source of profound spiritual hilarity (asking little children questions can be hazardous to your sanity). Please remember to wear your name tag....Winter Texans are returning and we are so happy to welcome them back "home".
A big thank you to Head Ushers for October: Joe and Peggy Bear * (*A BIG thank you to elders who assisted Peggy while Joe was ill.)
Thank you also to…. Communion servers Ken Craven, Janet Gaskamp and Sandy Swanson AND Veronika Camehl, who prepared the Communion AND Sally Reynolds, who provided the wine.

The Chancel Choir presents “The Living Light”
A dramatic Musical Experience for Christmas by Ruth Elaine Schram
Sunday, December 15, 2013
Similar in concept to its predecessor, The Living Last Supper, this unique presentation of the Christmas story is seen through the eyes of those who witnessed the first Christmas in Bethlehem many years ago. The music is Ruth Elaine Schram at her best—beautiful melodies, thoughtful texts, well-crafted part writing . There are brief monologues by characters from Mary and Joseph to members of the innkeepers' family… interspersed among seven songs, each offering their personal perspective on the unusual events surrounding them and incorporating familiar Christmas carols. All in all, I expect The Living Light to be a cornerstone of our celebration of the Christ-child and remembered for years to come.
Performance time: 35 minutes
I invite anyone who would like to sing the Christmas Cantata with the Choir to please join us in rehearsals on Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 6:30. In addition to a play book each choir member receives a part-dominant CD to assist in learning the music. We had our first preview of the score on October 23, so it isn’t too late to join us!

View of NAME TAG Display
NAME TAGS: You might have noticed our Winter Texan friends beginning to return to Church. To help them properly identify you, please remember to wear your name tags. If in need of a new or replacement tag, fill out a request in the folder in the Mission Room beneath the name tag holders.
Have you “REACHED OUT” to friends and new acquaintances lately?
Church attendance and membership is down across the country and our beloved First Presbyterian Church has not been growing as it has in the recent past. Generally, we are doing better than most churches, but we need to let people know just how rewarding it is to be part of this Church. Honestly- when was the last you asked someone if they had thought about joining our Church? I know I find it difficult to approach the subject because I feel that religion is a personal issue. On the other hand, it is easy to extoll the virtues of our church and brag about our mission and benevolences and what we believe. We have excellent informational folders to give to anyone who shows the slightest interest.
It is easy to extoll our history of giving back to our community and those in need (i.e. Good Samaritans, The Odyssey Foundation, Castaways, Commodities food bank, The Boy Scouts, The Ministerial Alliance, The Community Table, Su Casa de Esperanza, Neet Feet, troop support, Alcoholics Anonymous support, etc.) I am proud of our history of being in the forefront of establishing and volunteering to meet the needs of this Community. Who wouldn’t want to be part of such a group? And the icing on the cake is we are blessed to have a talented, dedicated staff as well as a gifted and eloquent pastor who is able to deliver sermons that resonate in your heart AND your mind. How many churches can say that!
The point is: All we need to do is bring the subject up when we meet someone new or even an older acquaintance. Go out of your way to talk to visitors to our town and our Church. Wear your name tag at church services. Reaching out person-to-person will insure our Church will continue to grow and continue to meet future needs. It is up to each and every one of you.

Editor’s Note: For printing purposes I needed an extra page so rather than inserting a blank sheet with a
“Purposely Left Blank” note emblazoned across it, I decided to fill it with pictures of the Vestibule, Narthex,
Sanctuary and Parlor for those of you in the reading audience who haven’t had an opportunity to see the
results of the remodel from the summer of 2011. (We called it the “Sanctuary Upgrade Project” or “SUP”….)

The Presbyterian Men’s meeting for this month will be on Tuesday, November 5th at 12:00 noon in
the Church Café. Lunch will be served, followed by short business meeting which will adjourn by 1:00
pm.
Please come and join us as we plan how we can make a difference in our church and community.
We are a very informal group and anyone who attends our Church is welcome. We need your ideas and talents.
Last month we donated $500 to assist Coastal Bend Troop Support’s “Operation Christmas Stocking” program
with the costs associated with mailing their gift boxes to our military
service members deployed overseas. We will be discussing our Christmas
donations to other local charities at the November meeting.
We were able to sell a very nice older boat trailer donated to us by Mr.
David Sikes of Fort Worth (a friend of Don and Caro Jackson). We sold it
in 3 days for $825 and I want to thank Mr. Sikes for his kindness and the
Jackson’s for making it happen. The proceeds will be spent for good
causes in this holiday season.
LOOK FORWARD TO ALL MEN WHO ARE INTERESTED,
PARTICULARLY WINTER TEXANS/VISITORS.

Women, these are opportunities for growth and service, and a time to have fellowship with other women in the church during November. Please mark your calendars for the following experiences.
1. The next PW monthly meeting will be Tuesday, November 5 at 10 pm in the Parlor. Following that meeting, PW is invited to Live Oak Elementary School (where Odyssey is housed now) for a tour of the facilities. Come join us as we see how “our baby” has grown!!! 2. AN EXTRA Quilter’s DAY has been scheduled. In addition to our regular sewing day the 3rd Tuesday (see Item 4 below), we will meet on Tuesday, November 12, from 9am -12pm to work on pillow cases for the children’s home. We have 150 to make and we’ve finished 20. HELP! If you don’t sew, we need volunteers to do other projects like iron or “pull sleeves.” Even if you can only stay an hour, we need you! 3. Our Circle Bible Study will meet on Tuesday, November 12 at 12pm in the parlor. Pati Vincent will complete our study of Chapter 1 on Eve. Janet Gaskamp will begin Chapter 2 on Sarah of our study of Twelve Extraordinary Women by John MacArthur. (Books are for sale at $15.) Be sure to bring your lunch to eat. 4. Quilters will meet on Tuesday, November 19 from 9am-12 noon to work on prayer quilts and pillow cases. We will work on both pillow cases and prayer comforters. Come enjoy the fellowship and the sewing. Come share your talents and the joy of doing for others. 5. Our Castaways Volunteers are at Castaways on Mondays (8-3) and Thursdays (8-11) every week. There is plenty to do and the jobs are easy to learn! Please join us!!! Castaways earned $7000 in July and August. We need your help working the store especially on Monday, men and women. If you can share an hour to help on Mondays, we would REALLY appreciate your help! Hope to see you there on Monday anytime all day or on Thursday mornings. We will be asking for people to add their name to an ‘emergency’ list for Mondays. When we find we are too short handed to cover the store, these folks would be called in to help for that day. Please be willing to be placed on this emergency list to help us get through this ‘time of need!’
6. Odyssey has invited PW to come for a coffee and tour of their facilities in November 5 following the PW meeting. Remember, PW funded the beginnings of Odyssey. We can see how this program has grown.
7. Our new Good Samaritans liaison is Janet Gaskamp. She has volunteered to attend the meetings for us. Thanks, Janet!!! 8. Sara Craven joined our meeting to explain further about Lovin’ Spoonfuls, a group to prepare and deliver meals for people coming home from the hospital. There are 15 people who have volunteered to be a part of this new church program. If you would like to help with meals, please call Sara Craven 727-0093 to volunteer. 9. The Neet Feet report was given by Pati Vincent. In September we bought 71 pairs of shoes totaling $1371.27. She also gave a recap of the meeting with the counselor chairperson at ACISD Central Office. Joey Patek, superintendent, would like to streamline the donations to the school district by doing it all in one place, Good Samaritans. He would like to take it out of the counselors’ hands. Pati told her that we would have to get permission from PW and Walmart to make this change. Another meeting is scheduled for January. It was decided at PW that a group would go to talk to Mr. Patek and if
this change was being enforced and if so, it might be necessary to stop Neet Feet. 10. Ingrid reported on the delivery of the $1500 and baby items to Su Casa. She said the money and items were tearfully accepted, and that we were called, “God’s gift to this earth.” Su Casa will take any old car seats or cribs because the need is so great. If they can’t use them, they will share them with folks across the border. 11. Women’s Retreat is on the calendar for February 8. Mark your calendars!!! 12. Ingrid announced she is chairing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes this year and that the deadline is Nov. 18. 13. A list of homebound women was made so that cards can be signed and mailed next month. 14. We can start signing up for Poinsettias sponsorships now; the sign up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board outside the Mission Room. More details will follow when known ... watch the bulletin board and weekly bulletins! 15. Actions taken by PW:
A. Gave $300 donations to the 5 schools for supplies and uniformed clothing. B. Voted to pay the postage for FPC member’s who fill a shoebox or Christmas Stocking for “Operation
Christmas Child” and/or “Operation Christmas Stockings for our Troops.” C. Voted to donate $2500 to Helen Statesir’s granddaughter, Marsha Baker, a missionary returning to Uganda. D. Paid for 71 pairs of shoes for $1361.27. E. Will pay for church floor buffer when the bill comes in. F. PW received a $75 Memorial for Penny Baldwin. G. PW has earned $70,000 through September from Castaways.

The Coastal Bend Day of Giving is officially set for Tuesday, NOVEMBER 12,
First Presbyterian Church members have two
options for making their donation:
1) Log onto www.coastalbenddayofgiving.org and follow the step by step
instructions. Be sure to designate your donation to ROCKPORT-FULTON
GOOD SAMARITANS. A credit card is required and a small service fee (it
was $2 last year) will be added to it. (Donors who need help with the
process may contact the church office for assistance. ) OR ….
2) Give your donation to the church and they will do it for you. If using a
check, make it payable to First Presbyterian Church and note 'Good Sam Day
Of Giving' on the memo line. If using cash, insert it in a pew envelope and
note “Day of Giving” on the face (don’t forget to include your name if you
want the donation posted to your giving record.) You can also pick up a Good Samaritans
donation envelope in the Mission Room (see arrow.) Drop the donation into the collection plate
on any Sunday morning through November 10. Then on November 12, these donations will be
skillfully combined into one amount and donated via internet by our ever hard working 'Church
Lady Bev'. THANKS BEV FOR HELPING AGAIN THIS YEAR!
Our donations will be DOUBLED up to the first $10,333 … meaning there is a
potential for more than $20,000 for use locally by the Rockport-Fulton Good
Samaritans in 2013.
Thanks again to our congregation for FOOD AND MONETARY donations received
on the first Sunday and transferred to the Good Samaritans Center.

COMMUNITY TABLE UPDATE
The November serving schedule is as follows:
November 05 First Presbyterian Church 12 Holy Cross Lutheran Church 19 Interdenominational 26 First Baptist Church
Our Church will be cooking on Monday, November 4th preparing for Tuesday’s meal. We have established a “signature” menu when it is our turn, which is Meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed veggies, bread & butter, assorted Oreo cookies & ice cream. The cooks are set, we just need volunteers to set-up, serve, wash dishes and clean up. Call or email the office if you can help. It will be wonderful to get our winter visitors back soon as their enthusiasm and energy is contagious.
This is a busy month for The Community Table and FPC in particular but spiritually rewarding. Historically we have served about 300 diners at our first Tuesday in November meal and around 400+/- at the Tuesday “Thanksgiving” meal. Speaking specifically about the Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Meal now, which I, your not so humble former director, have volunteered to come out of retirement to lead … we will start 30 minutes early with two serving lines in the kitchen to keep up with the rush and to reset the tables 4 times. The good news is, as I write this, I have every reason to expect all host churches and the Lions Club to participate in cooking, serving, cleaning and dishes. Of course that also means expenses are split 7 ways - so it is a veritable feast at very low cost … and a real social event for the volunteers as well as the diners. Waiting to hear if HEB will donate turkeys again. So if you have any questions, call me at (361) 463-9086 - but I’m warning you now, that number will self-destruct on Wednesday, November 27. University of Notre Dame have discovered that
passing through a doorway triggers what’s know as
an “event boundary” in the mind, separating one set
of thoughts and memories from the next. Your
brain files away the thoughts you had in the
previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new
locale.”
It’s not aging, it’s the door!

Odds and Ends…
When the Presbyterian Women bought the church a new floor burnisher in October, it became Maintenance Man Mike’s most favorite new toy. And he has been very very busy using it to clean and wax the floors in the Fellowship Hall, café and kitchen. I took this picture because is shows how he blocked the entry to the kitchen while the floor wax was drying … which also meant I couldn’t get to the pantry for my noontime Oreo cookie “fix.” As I stood there trying to figure out how I could get in the pantry, I couldn’t help but admire the shine on that floor! If you see Mike, let him know he is doing a great job - but tell him not to block the Church Lady’s access to the Oreo cookies next time! (If you’re reading the black and white version of this issue, you need to view the picture on line, in full color.)
