1. Objective Contestants will build the highest performance bridge with ONLY Popsicle sticks, white glue and construction paper. Judges will evaluate other qualities of the bridge and design process. There are two grade divisions, Grade 3-6 and Grade 7-8. A team may consist of one, two, or three students.

Date: March 04, 2006 Time: 11:00 am

Place: Scarborough Civic Centre, Council Chambers 2. Specifications 2.1. The main structure of the bridge must be constructed only of wooden Popsicle

sticks and white glue. Construction paper is only to be used for the deck of the bridge, which can be cut to fit the design of the bridge. Construction materials are specified as follows:

a. Regular white all purpose glue

b. Standard wooden Popsicle sticks

c. Construction paper

NOTE: Refer to Figure 1 for a sample picture of white glue and Popsicle sticks

2.2. The bridge MUST conform to following specifications:

a. Total weight of the bridge must not exceed 300 grams.

b Bridge must be 60 mm wide capable of transporting two matchbox cars

Are the Popsicle sticks neatly assembled? Was glue used carefully and not excessively? Is there good fit and finish?

Construction Technique

Do the students understand construction principles? Beam construction: e.g. I beam, laminated Bolts made of popsicle sticks used? Does the bridge have special supports?

Aesthetics Does the bridge look unique? Is the bridge pleasing to look at? Paintwork and other decorations. Good use of shape and colour.

The volunteers of Scarborough Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario have organized a Bridge Building Competition for the benefit of school children in our community. A parent or legal guardian who wants their child to participate in this competition must complete and sign this form. Each child must present this completed and signed form at registration on 4th March 2006.I understand that the Scarborough Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario (SCPEO) and its representatives will take all reasonable steps to provide an environment in which everyone’s safety is of prime importance. SCPEO volunteers have arranged the competition, but SCPEO cannot take direct care and control of your child. We encourage you to be present at the competition so that both of you will share and enjoy your child’s successes and achievements.I am aware that SCPEO and its volunteers cannot assume responsibility for any injury, loss, damage or harm to any child or to his/her property during the course of any activity, which is part of the above program, including travelling to and from the competition site.
