Richly textured facades lend the Upper West Side’s grand residential buildings their unique character. At 207 West 79th Street, Morris Adjmi Architects nodded to the decorative flourishes on surrounding buildings by designing terracotta panels that catch light and shadow in organic relief. Traditional limestone masonry at the base gives way to buff-toned brickwork, effecting subtle shifts in scale as the building rises to the Art Deco–inspired cornice detailing that crowns it at its top. Operable casement-style windows are overscaled and wrap around corners to offer multiple vantage points and maximize light. Pattern, texture, and scale work in concert to create an elegant facade that pays homage to its historic neighbors, while proudly taking its place among them. This newest addition to the Upper West Side fabric features 19 half- and full-floor residences and an elegant, 24-hour attended lobby finished with marble mosaic tiles and hardwood paneling. Residents enjoy the convenience of the on-site fitness studio, bike and storage areas, as well as a playroom.

THE STORY

TREE-LINED WEST 79TH STREET

Design elements of the building’s exterior are reflected in its lobby details and residence interiors—public foyers are embellished with custom wallpaper based on the design of the facade’s terracotta panels. Master bathrooms are tiled in an Empire-style rattan pattern in marble and porcelain, with Bianco Bello marble walls and countertops, vanities with micro-architectural fluting and faceting on the brushed nickel Lefroy Brooks fixtures. In the other bathrooms hive tile Calacatta marble accent walls, Bianco Beatriz vein-cut walls and vanities, and Calacatta tiling patterns that subtly echo the organic design of the building’s terracotta facade panels. Every room displays the building’s nuanced mastery of materials and motif. A thoroughly modern residential building, deeply inspired by the scale, materials, and decorative elements of its historic precedents.

Airy. Private. Bespoke. The penthouse delights with all three. An expansive rooftop terrace and two private balconies are the exclusive domain of the penthouse residence. The private roof deck grants over 2,000 square feet of outdoor space with prime south- and west-facing exposure for abundant sunlight, spectacular sunsets, and 360-degree views. An outdoor kitchen with a built-in 36-inch stainless steel gas grill, smoked gray granite countertops and intimate seating area are ideal for dining and entertaining al fresco.

PENTHOUSE

FULL FLOOR RESIDENCE

The living and entertaining space features eight oversize windows along a 50-foot expanse centered on a gas-burning fireplace. The penthouse redefines the traditional Upper West Side residence by eschewing compartmentalized rooms in favor of living spaces that are functional and fluid, modernizing the traditional pre-war residential archetype by expanding room proportions and adding more windows throughout.

RESIDENCE FOYER

The open, light-filled rooms flow effortlessly from one to the next, while the fireplace and kitchen remain natural focal points to gather and pause. A mansion weave parquet pattern meanders from room to room throughout the expansive interiors. Modest baseboards and casings that frame doorways and windows signal an unfussy elegance, while white bronze door hardware imparts the subtle warmth of its material.

MASTER BEDROOM

In the bedrooms, traditional plank flooring renders these refuges visually distinct from the public living spaces. Master bedrooms open into spacious en-suite dressing rooms, and are designed with oversize north-facing casement-style windows that fill the space with natural light year round.

FULL FLOOR RESIDENCE KITCHEN

Epicurean kitchens feature oversize islands and counters of White Sky marble, as well as custom gray oak cabinetry inspired by traditional rail and stile construction, with complementing classic fixtures by Lefroy Brooks are appliances by Wolf, Subzero, and Miele.

MASTER BATHROOM

Master bathrooms are tiled in an Empire-style rattan pattern in marble and porcelain, with Bianco Bello marble walls and countertops. Details, such as vanities with micro-architectural fluting and faceting on the brushed nickel Lefroy Brooks fixtures, display the building’s nuanced mastery of materials and motif.
