T oday we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. For fifty days the Church, all of us, have celebrated Jesus’ Resurrection. Our Scripture, song, and prayer has focused on the promise that has come to all of us through

Jesus’ Resurrection, that is that all of us shall also rise with him. This is the core of our Catholic Christian faith. It has over 2020 years become a part of the fabric of our lives. Whether spoken or not it is a part of everything we do, how we work, families, politics, and world view. When other religious groups bemoan this fact, I have to agree with them. In this day and age, it may not be as strong as it once was, but it is still in us. On a cloudy rainy day have you ever said to yourself that later it is going to get better or tomorrow will be fine. Or lost a job and picked yourself up and said okay I will get through this. Those are Christian thoughts. They are based on darkness being con-quered by light. Death being conquered by life. These are the gifts Jesus gave us in his Resurrection. Jesus also promised that he would always be with us. Today we celebrate that promise in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is not only with us, it is in us. It helps us make decisions. It helps us know right from wrong. Our faith gives us indigestion as we make life decisions. Behind all our lives though is the reassuring fact that God is with us. It has been the greatest gift I ever received. In spite of the pandemic, life does go on. Whether we are still at home or have been essential

workers, we all are about four months older then when workers, we all are about four months older then when all this began. With that thought as the backdrop, I would like to introduce our new associate pastor Fr. Erasato Nyoni. Fr. Erasto was born in 1974 in Tanzania. He is an Augustinian who is seeking to be incardinated into the Archdiocese of Chicago. That means he wants to become a priest of the Archdio-cese. He served two parishes in Tanzania, and before coming to Chicago for School, he studied Spanish in Spain. In 2015 Erasto began studying at Loyola University in Chicago and received his MA in pastoral counseling. This past month Fr. Erasto completed his second unit of CPE, hospital training, and is ready for full time ministry. Because of his ability in Spanish, Fr. Erasto has helped at a number of our local parishes including St. Paul, Immaculate Conception, and St. Francis de Sales. He has also served at Infant Jesus of Prague as a weekend helper for Fr. Jack Jura. My hope is that when we begin to reopen Fr. Erasto will be the lead as we look to establish a Spanish Sunday mass in our parishes. Soon we will have Fr. Erasto celebrate one of our online masses. So, with gratitude and joy we welcome Fr. Erasto to St. Agnes and St. Kieran. Finally, I don’t want anyone to worry. Fr. O’Mara, Fr. Tom, and I will also still be serving the parishes as well. Fr. Tom officially retires June 30th but will still be with us. We all hope to see you soon in person.

Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-2030 312.534.8230 archchicago.org May 13, 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, These fifty days of Easter, leading to Pentecost, are marked by unprecedented suffering, as humanity has fallen victim to a perilous contagion. In addition to the threats to our physical wellbeing, we are suffering spiritually as the Covid-19 pandemic has required restrictions of our worship and active participation in the sacramental life of the Church. Surely, there have been moments in history when governments and rulers have persecuted Christians and banned their public worship. This is not one of them. Rather, the present restrictions come in response to an extreme medical emergency as local, state and federal authorities – specifically public health officials – legitimately fulfil their responsibilities to safeguard human life and the common good. They have based their reasonable guidance on careful consideration of empirical data and the best available disease-mitigation practices as they seek to contain the pandemic’s rampage through our communities. While everyone must exercise good citizenship in observing these restrictions, I call on the Catholic faithful, as advocates for justice and charity, to comply with these regulations. From the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper,” a truth that must inspire us as we are called to sacrifice. We should also be motivated to cooperate with public safety norms, given our reverence for life and human dignity. This is, at its heart, a moment to proclaim the breadth and depth of what it means to be pro-life, particularly as this virus preys on the most vulnerable in our midst. The good news is that a plan for a gradual reopening of our churches has now taken shape, as I note below. However, since our movements will be restricted as that plan unfolds in different phases, your pastors and bishops will continue for the present time to offer Mass in private each day and to livestream and broadcast Masses from our parishes and the archdiocese. I am particularly grateful to ABC-TV, Univision and Polvision in Chicago for giving us airtime every Sunday. These celebrations surely are not the same as gathering in our churches for Mass, but I know from hearing from many parishioners that they provide a great deal of solace and support in this time of uncertainty. We must be honest. We expect this situation to continue for some weeks, and any plan for reopening our churches for public worship must include every precaution to ensure public gatherings do not create a second wave of contagion, thus squandering the gains made through our sacrifice in these days. With those realities in mind, I am heartened to announce that we have reached an agreement with the Office of the Governor on a multi-phase Plan for re-opening our churches for the celebration of the sacraments, private prayer, adoration and Mass. As I share the Plan with you, both by way of an Executive Summary and the full Plan in the following pages, I want to assure you of my prayers for you and your family’s personal, material and spiritual wellbeing. I also express my appreciation to the many people on the archdiocesan staff and in the Office of the Governor for the many hours they have given to designing and fine tuning this agreement. Again, I call on all Catholics to seize this moment to exercise faith-filled citizenship in a way that reflects our deep regard for life, our calling as disciples of Jesus and our love of country. May, 2020 RE: Parish Financial Update Dear St. Kieran Parish Family, It is encouraging to see so many people engaged in the life of our parish, supporting one another during this difficult time. From our on-line prayer groups to the numbers connecting to our YouTube Masses to our continued ministries supporting on-going care for those in need, our parish family remains united as we bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community. The Finance Council and I want to ensure you have a clear understanding of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parish operating income and expenses. We project a 44% shortfall in this year’s budget due in large part to decreased weekly offertory, but also due to the cancel-lation of some of our spring events and fundraisers. The Sunday offertory since March 15 (2020), including the Easter Collection, is 54% below the amount for the same period last year. While we have been able to lower some expenses, the wages of our employees continue to represent a large share of our operating costs. Our parish staff is working hard to maintain the life of our parish and address the needs of our more than four hundred parishioners. A substantial cushion has been built up in our savings account and is currently being used to maintain our payments to the Archdiocese of Chicago (these payments include monthly charges for Archdiocesan Assessment, PRMAA or Priests’ Retirement Fund, and Property & Casualty Insurance.) With the assistance of the Archdiocese of Chicago, our parish applied for and received money from the CARES Act Paycheck Protection Program. In accordance with the provisions of the CARES Act, these funds may only be used to cover payroll and utility expenses over the next two months. Any unused funds at the end of that two month period will be returned. In addition, it is hoped that much of the CARES Act monies will be forgiven. The Finance Council and I understand that this is a time of economic uncertainty and are truly grateful to those who have been able to continue supporting our parish. P entecost has always been seen as the ‘grand finale’ of our Eastertime celebra- tion; it is the fiftieth and final day of the season. It is filled with images of fire and wind and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus - and not just the disciples of long ago. In this time of apparent ‘exile’ it may be hard for us to believe that Jesus is able to keep his promise and be present in each of our lives. Why do we

downplay the signs of God’s goodness active in the choices for good that we can still make and in those times of love and compassion that others extent to us? No one of us lives ‘ordinary’ lives because the Spirit of God has been poured into each of us. Take the time to notice and revel in this living presence of God in your life. Put into words and share your experience of God with someone. We have each been given the power to speak the language of faith, hope and love. Do not let fear ‘stifle the Spirit’ that is always alive in you and desiring to reach out to touch our world with signs of his love – signs that you and you alone have been chosen to bring to others. Come, Holy Spirit, come. Give us your wisdom and understanding. Loosen our tongues to bless and praise the Father and the Son for the great gift we received at our baptism, when we came to birth in your Life-giving grace. Cardinal Cupich has canceled, suspended, or postponed all church events through the end of May. This means that Religious Education classes have been canceled, and First Com-munion and Confirmation have been post-poned. Parents should review the last three chapters of student textbooks with their children, as it is unlikely that we will make up our last three scheduled classes for the academic year. Our food pantry at St. Irenaeus in Park Forest is serving higher numbers of families than usual, many of them first-time clients who have suddenly found themselves out of work. At the same time, we are finding it harder and harder to acquire some common food items. As a result, we cannot provide families with as much food as they really need.
