  • O ne of the more amusing stories of the Old Testament is where the Hebrew peo-ple decide to build a tower so high that it will pierce the clouds and reach heaven. While they are still build-ing this Tower of Babel, God comes down, scatters the people and disu-nites them so that they all end up speaking different languages and not understanding each other. This is the origin of our word to babble.

We hear this story each year on the eve of Pentecost. But on Whit Sunday itself the story comes full circle with the sending of the Holy Spirit. What we see in the Acts of the Apos-tles is that when the Ho-ly Spirit descended on the Church, the disunity of Babel was reversed and people were once more united. Although they were from many different nations they

could all understand the language of the apostles preaching. So Pentecost is the Churchs birthday. No longer afraid and hud-dled together for safety, the apostles come out preaching from the hip.

And armed with the Holy Spirit they make con-verts by the thousand. Yet they could not have done this without the Spirit, without the fire in their bellies.

Nor can we do it today. Without the Spirit we are simply a human organi-sation, at worst a Quan-go and at best a plausi-ble charity. Yet the Church claims to be

much more than this: it professes to be the visi-ble presence of Christ on earth today. So we need the Spirit to breathe life into the Body of Christ. It is the Spirit who constantly purifies us from our ten-

dency to put our-selves first and to seek to control ra-ther than to serve. It is the Spirit who unites us in one body of witness and praise. It is the Spir-it who leads us ever deeper into the mysteries of God and reveals his pur-pose. And it is also the Spirit who in-spires us to strive

for the best and who empowers us to speak the words that God wants the world to hear.

T he joyful feast of Pentecost pro-claims that the Spirit is at the very heart of eve-rything we do as Church. As St Paul puts it: Since the Spirit is our life, let us be directed by the Spirit (Gal 5:25)

    FRIENDS REUNITED FAITH IN FOCUS:

    Cafod Nepal Earthquakes Appeal.

Our Parish raised 1,624. Thank you everyone.

Since the collection another earthquake has occurred causing more destruction and chaos in all areas, and greater fear in the people.Cafod part-ners, Caritas Nepal are work-ing around the clock to reach people with the aid required-food, emergency shelter, help rebuilding homes, blankets, clothes, pots, pans and cook-ing equipment all have been lost. The monsoon rains are coming so there is urgent need to deliver aid quickly before remote villages be-come cut off. Caritas Nepal has already reached 38,000 in 7 of the worst hit districts as well as Kathmandu. Please pray for the people affected and for those working tirelessly to reach them. Thank you all for your support.

Youth Choir The youth choir would like to invite anybody who enjoys sing-ing to join the choir every second Sunday for the youth mass. We practise an hour before the 10am mass on that

Sunday but all music will be available in advance. We hope to start building up a good core of singers in prepa-ration for confirmation on 5th July and there will be a practice for singers and musicians on 14th June after the youth Mass. All are welcome. For more infor-mation, you can phone or text 07804293217 or Email: [email protected]

Bidding Prayers Thank you to members of the parish who have already pro-vided Bidding Prayers for the previous months. Further pa-rishioners are invited and encouraged to sign up on the list at the back of the church in order to prepare the Prayers of the Faithful It is a most important contribution to the liturgy and the prayer life of the parish.

It really is not a difficult task and is especially suitable for fam-ilies in order that they can each choose topics which are im-portant to them as well as issues of the moment. It is a time to give voice to those who need the support of our prayers. If you are unsure of how to compose the prayers there are help-ful sheets pinned adjacent to the signing up list.

Please give serious thought to the contribution you could make and we especially need someone for June! Thank you so much in advance of your volunteering.

Choir practice on a Tuesday 6-7 sounded daunting. I cant sing a note but really enjoy belting out a hymn at weekend Mass. So I gathered up all my reserve and went along to find a handful of faces I know really well and guess what? Choir practice, in Church, singing Godly hymns with our Parish Priest is actually fun! We are having fun! Fr. Pius joins us for practice as does Deacon Joy and collectively we are starting to sound quite good. We have Simon Hughes to thank for bringing some new and lovely hymns and for injecting some laughter in to an hour of hymn singing. If we all turn up there are just 7-8 of us, a fairly equal split of men and women (unusually for a church choir!). Weekly practice is a commit-ment and we can't all make it every week - but Simon does! So even if there's just 3 of us its still great. So if you, like me, have been really wanting to join in but feel nervous or self conscious and think you can't sing, just come along. We all felt the same way but Simon is instilling the con-

fidence in us to sing out with joy! The Secret Chorister
