“If you have concernsabout being too much of aforgiver, think of thatsaintly priest who wentbefore the tabernacle andsaid, ‘Lord, forgive me if Ihave forgiven too much. But you have given me the worst example!’”Pope Francis said this to the 13 men he ordained to thepriesthood for the Diocese of Rome on Sunday, May 11. Andhe told them: “Never grow tired of being merciful! Please! You have the capacity to forgive as did the Lord, who did notcome to condemn but to forgive! Have mercy — a lot!”

“Bureaucratic obstacles” In a recent homily, PopeFrancis said, “Grace is more important than all thebureaucracy. Many times we people of the Church are like afactory creating obstacles so people can’t arrive at grace. Maythe Lord help us to understand this. Those in the Church whoare in charge of administering the sacraments must leaveroom for God’s grace, and not put bureaucratic obstacles inthe way, making it hard for people to get close to God.”

“What is needed is more emphasis on rollingout the red carpet than in creating red tape.We are often more interested in making everyone follow astated number of specific classes and performing a statednumber of hours of community service than we are atmaking the sacraments available to people.” — Father Joseph Champlin, Writer, Lecturer, Pastor

Consider that noone – whetherfriend or brother, father or mother, lover or spouse –loves you morethan your God.

St. Alphonsus Liguori

God loves his people more than a bridegroom his

beloved. His love will be victorious over even theworst infidelities and will extend to his mostprecious gift: “God so loved the world that he gavehis only Son.” Catechism of the Catholic Church

Each and every one of us is

an object of God’s undyinglove. We know that God’seyes are always upon us,even when things seem verybleak. God is, indeed, ourFather. Even more, God isour Mother – not wanting tohurt us, but only to do goodfor us, all of us. Pope John Paul I

God loves each of us as if there

were only one of us to love.

Love could not be better

commended to you than by the factthat it is called GOD. St. Augustine

God is love. On this solid

rock the entire faith of theChurch is based.

Rediscover the joy of the faith,

the joy of being personallyloved by God, who gave hisson Jesus for our salvation. Tobelieve consists above all inentrusting oneself to the Godwho knows us and personallyloves us. Despite our weaknesses and our sins, Godloves us.

God’s closeness is not one of judgment that incites

terror, but one of support and liberation. God isalways with us. Even in the darkest nights of ourlives, he does not abandon us. Even at the mostdifficult times of our lives, he is present. Therefore,we Christians can trust that we are never alone. Thegoodness of God never abandons us.

Like a small child still totally dependent on his

mother, but old enough to recognize his need,Christians must acknowledge their dependence onGod. The image of the mother and child is a sign ofthe tender and maternal love of God. Pope Benedict XVI

There is no one who cannot

discover and find a place in God’slove. From it flows our Christianhope. There exists no one so bad,so brought down, so broken down, that he cannot find a place in thatlove.

God loves us not because we have

merited it or are worthy of it; rather, God’s love forus is freely given and unearned, surpassing all wecould ever hope for or imagine.

The relationship between God and those who

believe in him is one of warmth and love, not coldformality. The relationship is not cold like thatbetween an emperor and his subjects, but is one ofdeep affection like that which develops between twofriends, between spouses, between parents andchildren.

God’s faithful love will never lessen and will never

abandon us to ourselves, or to the darkness ofnonsense, blind fate, emptiness or death. St. John Paul II

“The Holy Spirit

tells our hearts: God is love. He’salways waiting forus. He is a fatherwho loves us like areal dad.” — Pope Francis

“Listen to the Holy Spirit because he is giving people

the good news that God loves them and can renew, purify and transform their lives.

“St. Paul affirmed in his Letter to the Galatians that thefruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. The Holy Spirit brings people into divine lifeas children of God where they can live as true children,in a relationship of intimacy, freedom, and faith in thelove and mercy of God.

“Living as children of God lets people see others asbrothers and sisters to respect and love. If people wereto listen to the Holy Spirit, they would hear him say,“God loves you.”

“Let us be guided by the Holy Spirit, allow him tospeak to our hearts, and he will tell us this: that God islove, he’s always waiting for us, he is a father wholoves us like a real dad, and only the Holy Spirit cantell our hearts this.

“We have to listen to the Holy Spirit who is inside us! What does he tell us? That God is good, that God is afather, that he loves us and always forgives us.”

— Pope Francis

God, our Father,

in our ignorance we have wrongly imagined you to be our enemy; we have wrongly thought that you take pleasure in punishing us for our sins; and we have foolishly conceived you to be a tyrant over human life.

But since Jesus came among us, he has shown that you are loving, and that our fear of you was groundless. St. Augustine

PENTECOST: The Fire of God’s Love“I shall ask the Father and he will give you

another Advocate to be with you for ever, theSpirit of Truth.”

The word pentecost means “fifty days.” Itoriginated from a Jewish harvest feast calledShavuot, or the Feast of Weeks, fifty daysafter Passover. In the Church, Pentecost is

celebrated fifty days after Easter, concluding the Easter Season. Pentecost celebrates the over-whelming experience of God pouring out the Spirit upon thefirst community of those who believed Jesus was the Lord. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirittransformed the first members of the Church from frightened, bewildered and confused peopleinto people of courage, conviction and love. The Holy Spirit comes to us, too, with the tenderness of a true friend and a protector andguide. The Spirit strengthens the virtues of faith, hope and love in each of us. The Spiritteaches and enlightens us. The Spirit strengthens us in times of trouble and helps us to bearthe burdens of life which we all face. The Spirit guides us in applying the commandment ofJesus to love one another in our everyday lives. The color of vestments for Pentecost is red. It symbolizes the intense love and fire of theHoly Spirit. Other symbols of the Holy Spirit are the dove, the tongues of flames, and wind.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit ~ Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, Wonder and Awe

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit ~ Charity, Peace, Joy, Kindness, Goodness, Patience, Long-Suffering, Gentleness, Faith, Truthfulness, Self-Control, Chastity

“Spirit” or “Ghost”?Q. Why and when was the name of the Holy Ghost changed to Holy Spirit? Is it all right to still use “Holy Ghost?”A. Over time, words often change in meaning. Take the word “apology,” for example. It comes from the Latinapologia, meaning a defense of the truth. St. John Henry Newman used it in this sense in his famous work Apologiapro vita sua. Today, the word has an almost opposite meaning: an admission of error accompanied by regret. When the Scriptures were translated into English in the 16th century, the Latin Spiritus was translated into thecommon English as Holy Ghost —“ghost” meaning a spirit that was good and helpful. In time, the word came to meana spook that could haunt people and cause harm. About the middle of the 20th century, new translations into English began to appear, both Catholic and Protestant. The translators used modern English and dropped Holy Ghost and used Holy Spirit. The new translations were usedat Mass, and, thus, Holy Spirit passed into general usage. Some prefer the old usage, particularly people who hold theold King James or Douay Bibles as the only acceptable translations.

From Babel to Pentecost The Church must always become anew what she already is. She must open theborders between peoples and break down the barriers between class and race. In her, there cannot be those who are forgotten or looked down upon. In the Church there areonly free brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. The wind and fire of the Holy Spirit mustcontinually break down those barriers that we men and women continue to buildbetween us. We must continually pass from Babel (confusion and disharmony) – beingclosed in on ourselves – to Pentecost (wisdom and unity). St. John Paul II

The Holy Spirit Is Love At Pentecost, the Spirit, with the gift of tongues, demonstrates that his presence unites and

transforms confusion into communion. Human pride and egoism always create divisions, build walls of indifference, hate andviolence. The Holy Spirit, on the other hand, makes hearts capable of understanding thelanguages of all, as he re-establishes the bridge of authentic communion between earth andheaven. The Holy Spirit is Love. The Holy Spirit illuminates the human spirit and indicatesthe way to become more like Christ, that is, to be the image and instrument of the love whichflows from him. Pope Benedict XVI

O merciful God, fill our hearts, we pray, with the graces of your Holy Spirit: with love, joy,

peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. Teach us to lovethose who hate us and to pray for those who despitefully use us so that we may be the childrenof your love, our Father, who makes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain onthe just and on the unjust. In adversity grant us grace to be patient. In prosperity keep ushumble. May we guard the door of our lips. May we lightly esteem the pleasures of this world, and thirst after heavenly things. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. St. Anselm

Compassionate God, with great expectation we look to your Holy Spirit to work in our world, empowering us to

serve you as Jesus did. May we listen for your word and respond generously to your call. Renew in us the grace ofour baptism. Strengthen married couples, single men and women, deacons, priests, and sisters and brothers as theyseek to serve you by sharing their love and compassion.Grant wisdom to those who are discerning their own call. With gratitude may we all proclaim the Good News ofJesus in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Loving God, Creator of all, we recognize that life is a gift from you. Open our hearts to your Holy Spirit and renew

in us a deep respect for all persons: the family, children, the unborn, the sick, the disabled, the abused, theimprisoned, the aged, the dying, the poor, the homeless, the unemployed, the victims of war, and all who areoppressed in any way.

Bless all of us, and instill in us a deep love for your gift of life.

Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may our words and actions foster reverence for all human life.May we be true witnesses to the truth that all life is precious and has sublime dignity. Lead our nation and our worldto this understanding so that we may be a people dedicated to the protection of all your sons and daughters. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ, the Word who took on our human nature and lived among us. Amen.
