Pain lingers forvictims after

Clarkston News Staff Writer Dr. Farid Fata will spend decades be-

hind bars for massive health-care fraud, but his victims continue to suffer.

Patty Hester, of Clarkston, gave away belongings and took her family on vaca-tions including a trip to Disney World af-ter being falsely diagnosed by Fata.

“I was told I had cancer and was a ter-minal patient. I was told Iwas dying and the can-cer I had would soonconvert to leukemia,"Hester said.

A nurse at a medicalfacility in Clarkston,Hester trusted Fata’s di-agnosis, knowing hewas a world-renownedand reputable physician.She never sought a sec-ond opinion.

Hester received numerous treatmentsincluding bone marrow biopsy’s and iron

infusions, which she got sick from. Hester wonders what those treatments reallywere, and if the medication administeredwas what Fata claimed it was.

"All I could think was I was dying andneeded treatment fast," she said.

Being in the medical field, she ques-tioned some things she saw during her treatments at the clinic. One time she askeda nurse why her treatments were labeledwith the incorrect birthday. During another

Clarkston News Staff Writer A group of concerned citizens met with

city officials to discuss a petition against ex- panding city hall, but officials remain con-vinced it’s in Clarkston's best interests.

“The facilities committee worked hard andconcluded it would be better to make pay-ments over time and, at the end, the citywould own an asset rather than continuingto rent and have nothing at the end," said

City officials unmoved by anti-expansion petitionCity Manager Carol Eberhardt at the July 14meeting at Clarkston-Independence DistrictLibrary.

Three proposals for an addition toClarkston city hall, with construction costsup to $500,000, is too much for a city of 880residents, said residents supporting a peti-tion to stop any expensive project.

“You don’t have the money for this," said businessman and resident Bob Roth. “Wheredo you think you are going to get the

money?"The city leases 3 E. Church Street for stor-

age of DPW equipment. The lease expires onDec. 31, and the property was recently pur-chased by Union Joints.

Eberhardt said the most expensive pro- posal is off the table. Remaining proposalswere scaled back, removing items such asnew doors and a paint job, which whittledcosts down to $250,000.
