Welcome to Penny Stock’s sophomore season entitled “The Enlisted Penny”. We hope you enjoy it. The offering continues to focus on the fundamentals - iconic items that are offered at a true value - always in style and always in stock.
When looking for inspiration, we found a group of amazing images of China Beach and the Dunang area of Vietnam from 1968. We feel they embody the Penny Stock aesthetic from that time in history. Bob Heurung shot the images and was kind enough to let us share them with you. Bob’s the guy in the white t-shirt - next to the chopper.
The casual ease and cool demeanor of the soldiers on their day off is what inspired the season. Check out the clean cuts of their clothes and the confidence in which they wear them. Even the clean white t-shirt takes on a certain elevated signficance amongst their female companions.
Mixed into collages on the following pages, you’ll see Bob and his crew making the best of their situaion - we particularly like their sophisticated choice of beverages. Anyway, boys will be boys and Penny Stock’s Spring 2011 offering is here to outfit them, complete with chopper rides and monkeys drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon.
THE ENLISTED PENNYSPRING 2011
For Spring we are extending our hand by introducing a few new details that incorporate the words “Coast to Coast”. These words are something that you will see intertwined into the branding from Spring forward. This is not a reference to our coastal roots; rather it’s a nod to the universal nature of the collection. The Penny Stock ethos was born out of our core belief that good style is for everyone, coast to coast, and every location in between.
We also know that spring brings warmer days and you’ll be spending some time in the water, so we are introducing “The Penny Aquatic”. A collection of three swim trunks that capture the style and attitude of the soldiers at China Beach from Bob Heurung’s images. We have emblazoned these styles with our signature handshake patch. It has been said that the purpose of a handshake is to “convey trust, balance, and equality”. We couldn’t say it better if we tried... Enjoy!

Anyone can make a t-shirt so we paid extra attention to the blend of our Penny Pocket tee so it has a point of difference to everything else in the marketplace. Our signature cotton / linen blend is the perfect mix of texture, durability and softness. We offer this blend with our seasonal artwork (like the handshake above) as well as in our classic yarn-dye stripes.

The dark blue in this plaid is real indigo yarn so it will fade over time like your favorite jeans. And we have chosen our classic Penny Short silhouette for this particular plaid. This is our most universal fit so you’ll be able to wear yours for years to come and appreciate the characteristics of the indigo as it travels with you.

Nothing is more iconic than the ringer t-shirt and we gave ours a coastal twist for spring with the classic sailor stripe and Penny Stock anchor. The unique shape of this anchor is made up of two letter “C”s facing each other with “to” in the middle, standing for “Coast to Coast”... From China Beach to Montauk to Malibu.

The camp shirt was a staple in every man’s wardrobe in the 50’s and 60’s so we’ve brought it back in a lightweight indigo stripe. Each detail is authentic to the original design including the construction of the camp collar, the straight hem across the bottom and the dual chest pockets. All we added was the envelope penny detail on the pocket (US Patent Pending).

Michael, our designer, painstakingly developed this reverse twill fabrication as homage to our favorite vintage military items. We labeled this jacket “The Enlisted Penny” and it has become the signature piece for the season. We also offer this fabrication in “The Enlisted Penny” pant and short. Both come in our “Spring Clean” fit so they look smart and modern when you wear them. If you look at Bob Heurung’s pictures of the soldiers at China Beach, you will note that they all wore their uniforms well – very clean and not too long. We also gave these styles an aggressive wash for an authentic, vintage aesthetic and a super-soft hand feel.
