This year marks the sixth year of the November Jazz Series. Although each year the instrument of focus changes, the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective presents free clinics for all instruments throughout the four day series.

Wednesday November 8

The Moravian Jazz Faculty presented a lively educational assembly program for area public school students grades 4 – 8. Each year these young students get their first taste of jazz and the program is always a great success.

Each year the Moravian College Music Jazz faculty presents an educational assembly program detailing the role of the series instrument of choice.The program is presented to students from grades 4 - 8. This program is often their very first exposure to jazz. In an effort to be entertaining as well as educational we use the model from the popular tv series “American Idol”. This year Professor Tom Kozic presented guitarists from three generations and the students voted for their winning choice.As always the program was well received

Mission Statement:

The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective strives to expose and promote the diversity of jazz through education, outreach and performance encouraging participation in America’s unique art form.

Education Objectives:

Through education in the arts, particularly jazz, the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective seeks to instill essential and life enhancing skills. Some of these skills include discipline, creativity, essential problem solving skills, working well with others in a cooperative atmosphere, confidence and intellectual development.

PA Jazz focuses on the musical communication that is at the core of jazz. Jazz is an expression of individuality and the spontaneous artistic language spoken within the context of a democratic framework. We are cognizant that jazz performers and students draw upon multiple educational and social disciplines to simultaneously interact in a manner that uniquely ties together many educational disciplines and learning.

Key Achievements

In its inaugural year, 2012, the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective presented two major events. The first of these, a Spring Concert, featured the PA Jazz nominated Artist of the Year, Nelson Hill, Bangor (PA) High School and Eastman Conservatory of Music graduate. Nelson was presented to the theme “Three Generations of Alto Saxophone Masters.” This performance featured octogenarian Grand Master, jazz legend, multiple Grammy award and industry poll winning saxophonist, Phil Woods. Mr. Woods is a resident of nearby Delaware Water Gap, PA and served as mentor and teacher to Nelson in his formative years. Completing the third generation, Stroudsburg High School and Manhattan School of Music graduate and former protege of both Nelson and Phil, Jay Rattman, Nazareth (PA) native and “next generation” saxophonist Patrick McGee was also introduced at this performance hosted by Bnai Abraham Synagogue in Easton, PA. The second event occurred in fall and was hosted by the Moravian College Music Department in Bethlehem, PA. The debut of the November Jazz Series, with the trumpet theme, lasted four days and included an assembly outreach program for local area students Grades 4 - 8, a full day of jazz trumpet clinics featuring PA Jazz Collective area trumpeters of distinction and two evening concerts with the quintet, Co-Op Bop and Moravian student ensembles. PA Jazz sponsored a visit by Mr. Brecker to Allentown School District’s Raub Middle School.

Additionally in this first year with the emphasis on education through the arts, PA Jazz sponsored various youth showcases and workshops at local locations. The aforementioned was accomplished while application for 501(c) 3 status was under review. The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective has since been awarded IRS Tax Exemption status. 2012 culminated with the production of a holiday recording featuring PA Jazz Collective artists. This CD was sponsored by Dave Berger and Rose Day with matching contribution by PPL Electric Utilities. It was given to all donating patrons at our year-end Jazz Vespers service presented at the Church of the Manger, Bethlehem, PA in December.

In 2013, PA Jazz featured an awards presentation and performance in spring hosted by Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. Tom Kozic, guitarist and graduate of Whitehall (PA) High School was named Artist of the Year. As April is “National Jazz Appreciation Month,” PA Jazz artists were presented in various neighborhoods throughout the Lehigh Valley (PA). Youth showcases were presented at various performance venues including Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem.

With the 2013 theme of saxophone, PA Jazz revisited a partnership with the Moravian College Music Department to present Phil Woods in the second annual November Jazz Series which culminated in a concert featuring commissioned works by area arrangers Nelson Hill and Neil Wetzel and composer Tony Gairo to showcase Mr. Woods. The performance was recorded and archived. 2013 concluded with a Jazz Vespers service at the Church of the Manger.

In 2014 PA Jazz joined Bethlehem performance space, Ice House, to present the first annual PA Jazz Idol program. Modeled after the popular television show “American Idol,” this program showcased aspiring area jazz students. Prizes were sponsored by local businesses and included cash and appearance opportunities. Annual awards were announced and included Artist of the Year, organist Craig Kastelnik. Students and sponsors were recognized as well. PA Jazz artists were featured at many venues throughout the Lehigh Valley in 2014 including a Wine and Jazz Day at Sorrenti’s Cherry Valley Winery and an Allentown (PA) Mayfair Festival of the Arts performance featuring a regional All-Star Septet with representatives from neighboring jazz organizations including Steve Rudolph, Central PA Friends of Jazz (Harrisburg), Marko Marcinko and Tony Marino, (Scranton) PA Jazz Alliance, Rick Chamberlain and Matt Vashlishan, Celebration of the Arts (Poconos PA) and Andy Warren of Berks, PA with Alan Gaumer and Neil Wetzel representing the PA Jazz Collective. The November Jazz Series III closed 2014 with esteemed composer, vocalist, and pianist Bob Dorough as guest performer.

For PA Jazz Appreciation month 2015 and riding the popularity of the first Jazz Idol event, PA Jazz again collaborated with Moravian College to present the Second Annual PA Jazz Idol competition. This event also featured the Collective’s Fourth Annual Award Ceremony. An All-Star group featuring 2015 Artist of the Year, drummer Gary Rissmiller, was assembled to perform at the Mayfair Festival of the Arts in May. The new “Vanguard Series” will feature Nelson Hill in performance with the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts Jazz Band at Godfrey Daniels. Spring activities culminated with another Wine and Jazz Day at Sorrenti’s Vineyards in June. This event marked the First Annual Jerry Kozic Memorial Scholarship Concert. Proceeds benefit scholarships in his name.

In fall, the Ice House hosted the first annual “Fall for Jazz” party. Jazz series IV instrument of focus was the trombone and the featured artist was Pennsylvania native and acclaimed trombonist, Robin Eubanks. An assembly, clinics and concert were presented November 18-20, 2015 at Moravian College with a Thursday evening performance at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem.

Having established five seasons of jazz events, 2017 the hugely popular Pa Jazz Idol was the highlight of the spring season. The summer season saw events at Cherry valley Winery and Riverside park in Easton, Pa. Both of these programs showcased emerging youth. The Christmas City Summer Jazz Festival which premiered in 2016 enjoyed its second successful run. Number three is scheduled for July 21, 2018. The Fall season Jazz Series V presented the big band as an ensemble and featured guest artists, internationally recognized composer Maria Schneider. This years’s ending jazz series features world recognized guitarist Vic Juris as the special guest.

VIC JURISThere’s hardly a musical context in which the gifted guitarist Vic Juris has not worked since beginning his professional career nearly a half-century ago. He”s been half of a superb guitar duet with Larry Coryell and an invaluable contributor to the groups of David Liebman and Gary Peacock and a special guest of the Mingus Big Band.Juris made his recording debut with Saxophonist Eric Kloss in 1975 and has since appeared on over two hundred jazz recordings. The Guitarist’s newest, Vic Juris Plays Victor Young presents Vic and the trio settling into the works of that Great American Songbook Composer. This CD showcases Vic’s flowing, warm toned, bop influenced lyricism and his penchant for unbridled swinging......

JOHN SWANABorn in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, Swana took up Trumpet at the age of 11. He was drawn to jazz at the age of 17 after hearing Dizzy Gillespie, and the interest developed into a passion while he was in college. There he began transcribing the solos of Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, and Tom Harrell. At the age of 26, he also started playing the EVI (Electric Valve Instrument).John is playing the EVI, and Valve Trombone , exclusively at the moment.Swana has performed and/or toured with the Mingus Big Band, and the Dave Holland Big Band. L ARRY MCKENNALarry McKenna is one of the world’s finest jazz saxophone players. He is known for his gorgeous, velvety sound, the unparalleled beauty of his balladry, and his fluid, bebop-inspired improvisations. For years, Larry’s status as a jazz great has been affirmed by his myriad fans and the jazz stars with whom he has played and recorded including Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Buddy DeFranco, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney and Frank Sinatra. Larry also is one of the most sought-out saxophone and jazz theory teachers in Philadelphia. He has taught countless students at University of the Arts, Temple University School of Music, West Chester University, Widener University, and Community College of Philadelphia. Many of his students have pursued successful careers in music. Larry’s influence, spanning decades, can be said to have established a Larry McKenna school of saxophone playing in the Philadelphia region. In addition to being a frequent guest on recordings by other top jazz players, Larry has released three CDs under his own name to widespread critical acclaim. His most recent CD, “Profile” (Dreambox Media 2009), mixes jazz standards with Larry’s original compositions, including the lovely and poignant ballad “Perhaps This Wintertime” with lyrics by Melissa Gilstrap, premiered by vocalist Nancy Reed. His earlier CDs, “It Might As Well Be Spring” (Dreambox Media 2001) and “My Shining Hour – Music of Harold Arlen” (EPE Records 1995), received praise from jazz critics across the United States and Canada and remain in demand. Music arranged by Larry McKenna has been performed on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and in the Nicholas Cage movie “Birdy,” in which Larry played and appeared. He has published many jazz-oriented arrangements for school concert bands which can be purchased from Northeastern Music Publications. Larry resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with four cats (the feline variety).

PAUL ROSTOCKPaul Rostock has served on the faculty of Moravian College since 1991 as an artist/lecturer and instructor of Double Bass and Bass Guitar. He has directed jazz ensembles and taught private jazz history and improvisation practicum’s, and directs the Moravian Bass Ensemble. Paul also serves as a director for the annual Summer Youth Jazz Camp. A versatile and sought after free lance musician, Paul has appeared with many popular artists including Frank Sinatra, Michael Feinstein, Steve Tyrell, Monica Mancini, Maureen McGovern, Toni Tennille and Bobby Rydell. Jazz artists Paul has performed with include Maynard Ferguson, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Randy Brecker, Stanley Turrentine, Bob Dorough, Carl Fontana and Jon Faddis. Regional jazz groups Paul is associated with include Dave Roper Trio, Rob Stoneback Big Band, David Leonhardt, Marko Marcinko and La Cuchina. Paul also toured and recorded with the late vocalist Frank Sinatra Jr.

BILL GOODWINBorn: Los Angeles, California - January 8, 1942An almost completely self-taught drummer, Bill attributes his early interest in the drums to Shelly Manne’s playing on the movie soundtrack of “The Man with the Golden Arm.” Before that he had taken piano lessons and studied the tenor saxophone. His father’s extensive record collection gave him the opportunity to hear and learn songs, and he still hears the form of the music first. From 1959 to the present, Goodwin has been a professional drummer, playing with the likes of Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon, Art Pepper, Jim Hall, George Shearing and Bobby Hutcherson, and singers such as June Christy, Joe Williams, Roseanna Vitro, Tony Bennett and Manhattan Transfer. The drum chair with Gary Burton brought him to the East Coast in 1969. After a three year stint with Burton’s group Bill settled down in an old farmhouse in the Poconos and worked the resorts. It was there that he and bassist Steve Gilmore became a team. Goodwin, like Gilmore, is a charter member of The Phil Woods Quartet (now Quintet), joining at it’s inception in February 1974. Phil Woods says, “Bill is the magic ingredient in our all acoustic group. He is one of the masters who plays the song, not just the time. He shades and tints beautifully. He plays the music.” Bill Goodwin has produced all of the The Phil Woods Quartet/Quintet and Little Big Band recordings since 1980 including the Grammy Award winning albums MORE LIVE (Adelphi), AT THE VANGUARD (Antilles) and the 1992 Grammy nominee ALL BIRD’S CHILDREN (Concord Jazz), as well as THE PHIL WOODS QUINTET MEETS DIZZY GILLESPIE on Timeless Records and FLOWERS FOR HODGES by Phil Woods and Jim McNeely duo. He has also produced several Tom Harrell recordings and was Omnisound’s main producer of jazz product.

NEIL WETZEL, ED. D. (Chair music Department & Director of Jazz Studies)Dr. Neil Wetzel is Assistant Professor of Music at Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) where he teaches saxophone and is Director of Jazz Studies. Having earned both a BM (Jazz Perf.) and MAT degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, in 2007 he completed the EdD program at Teacher's College, Columbia University. His dissertation focused on teaching jazz improvisation. As founder and music director of Moravian College’s summer music camp, July Jazz Getaway, Mr. Wetzel has worked and played with Clark Terry, Al Grey, Terrell Stafford, Milt Grayson, Stanley Turrentine, and Bobby Watson. He has backed many great performers including Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Johnny Mathis, Bernadette Peters, the Temptations and the Four Tops. He has recorded with the Philly Pops Orchestra and singer Patti Page in Carnegie Hall; this CD won the 1999 Grammy for best Pop Traditional Performance. He can also be heard on four CD’s with jazz pianist Eric Mintel: Live, Hopscotch, Dynamo and Four on the Floor. Mr. Wetzel has also played and taught at the Lana Jazz Festival in Lana, Italy as well as the Karel Velebny Jazz Workshop in Frydlant, Czech Republic. He is Vice President of the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective and the chair of their education committee. His latest CD project “Cowboys and Capes” was just released.

BILL WASHERBill Washer was born in Ridley Park Pennsylvania. 3 years later his family moved to Rochester, N.Y. where he grew up. He began studying the guitar when he was 11 years old and played in a dixie style band with other kids from the neighborhood. He later formed his own blues/rock band in High School playing dances, parties etc. and continued studying with the late Donald Ames.After High School, he attended the Berklee School in Boston studying guitar with Mick Goodrick and majoring in composition. While in Boston, he sat in with various jazz artists from N.Y.C. including Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones. He later worked with both of them. He also worked with Stevie Wonder around this time.When a friend from N.Y. called telling him the Joffrey Ballet Company was looking for a guitarist to play in 3 rock ballets, he jumped at the chance. While working with them he met his wife to be, Trinette Singleton, a dancer with the company at the time.Bill continued working in New York doing recording, Broadway, club dates etc. as well as touring with acts like Liza Minnelli and Ashford and Simpson.He and Trinette now live in Eastern Pennsylvania where she teaches and choreographs classical ballet. Bill continues to perform and teach in the area. They have a daughter, Katie, who is teaching High School physics.

AL AN GAUMER , Artistic Director Pennsylvania Jazz CollectiveAlan Gaumer has been playing trumpet since 1958. As a young trumpeter he appeared on the national television show “the Ted Mack Amateur Hour”. As featured Jazz trumpeter in US Navy Show Bands he performed in over 70 countries throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.He is currently in his twenty fourth year as jazz trumpet artist/lecturer at Moravian College. He serves as director of the Moravian College Fusion Ensemble and is very active in local jazz education adjudicating regularly at regional school jazz festivals. Several of his students have won positions in the prestigious Pennsylvania State High School Jazz Band.-trumpet section / jazz chair.Alan regularly performs with several ensembles including, theQuintet-Co-op Bop, in duet with Robin Bryan (Body and Soul). He also appears with the Moravian College Faculty Jazz Quintet and continues to free-lance in avariety of genres.Alan is the founder of and Artistic Director of the Lehigh Valley based, non-profit organization: The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective. A second Co-op Bop project “UNLIMITED” was recently released on Minsi Ridge Records and is receiving excellent reviews.

TONY GAIROVice President of the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective, Tony Gairo has composed for and performed with jazz saxophone icon Phil Woods, has composed a jazz ballet and a jazz opera. In addition, he has performed with David “Fathead” Newman, Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Al Martino, Clay Aiken and many others. He is an adjunct on the jazz faculty at Moravian, Muhlenberg and Lafayette Colleges and has been nominated for a Grammy Nomination for an album released on Sea Breeze Records,Treacherous, which featured a program entirely of his original compositions for jazz orchestra. Tony was commissioned to write the closing piece for the first act of tonight’s concert.

DR. FR ANK DIBUSSOLO Frank DiBussolo has been a professional musician since 1965. During this time he has worked with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, Diane Carroll, Vicky Carr, Bob Hope, George Burns and Dom DeLouise and others. As a soloist he has been featured with the bands of Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden, Lester Lannin and more. He is a graduate of Widener University and the Combs College of Music where he earned the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. He has served on the faculties of Swarthmore College, Moravian College, Lehigh University and the Combs College of Music. Dr.DiBussolo has recorded extensively and can be heard on the Naxos, DBK and Lost World record labels. For his work in the recording industry, he has been nominated eight times for The Grammy Award in various categories. He is published in Guitar Player, The Educator and Just Jazz Guitar magazines as well as in the Groves Dictionary. Joe Mixon and Frank DiBussolo co-produced the Guitar Festival day one event of the current PAJAZZ Series VI.

GARY RISSMILLERA native of Bethlehem, PA, Gary has been playing drums for more than twenty-five years. He has studied with Joe Morello and performed with jazz greats Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Eric Kloss, Tom Harrell, Randy Brecker, Don Patterson, Urbie Green, George Young, Bobby Troupe, Janet Lawson, Gary King, and others. He has opened for Lionel Hampton, Cab Calloway, Joe Henderson, and Spyro Gyra. He performs regularly with his own combos, the Skip Wilkins/Jill Allen Quartet, the Nick Driscoll Quartet, and the Alan Gaumer Quintet, among others. His appearances include The Village Gate and Tavern on the Green in New York City; The Deer- head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, PA; and Ortlieb’s Jazz Haus, Chris’s, and The Blue Moon Jazz Club in Philadelphia. He has performed with various combos, including his own, at the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts since its inception. He has also played at the Central Pennsylvania Mellon Jazz Festival, the Scranton (PA) Jazz Festival, the Wichita (Kansas) Jazz Festival, and Mayfair (Allentown, PA), and as artist-in- residence at Musikfest (Bethlehem, PA). Gary has taught drum privately for around twenty years. He has served as adjudicator at the Wichita Jazz Festival and as instructor at Moravian College’s July Jazz Getaway, during which he also performed with the legendary Clark Terry.

JOE MIXON is a graduate of Moravian College. An accomplished guitarist, Joe performs all styles of music. He currently hosts a popular weekly jam session at the Artisan wine & cheese cellar. Joe is currently teaching jazz guitar and jazz history at Lebanon Valley College. Joe and Frank DiBussolo co-produced the Guitar Festival day one event of the current PAJAZZ Series VI.

BRIAN BORTZWell-versed and experienced in a broad range of styles and possessing prodigious chops, Brian holds down the low end (and some high end too) with his own jazz group, The Last Thursday Band, and the James Gerard Orchestra, a 10-piece Philly-based dance band. He co-hosts a very popular bi-weekly jazz jam at the Artisan Wine and Cheese Cellars in Bethlehem, along with Joe Mixon and Gary Rissmiller. Brian is also bassist in the award-winning Fusion Jazz Trio as well as Hector Rosado’s Latin Jazz Experience, and is first-call sub with the fabulous Eric Mintel Quartet and Philadelphia Funk Authority among many others. Brian has backed numerous stars in his career, from George Burns, Joan Rivers and Don Rickles to Simone, Bobby Rydell and Clay Aiken (and many more); played the Broadway touring show Grease; and is an annual regular with the live-televised Freddy Awards.

BRUCE KL AUBER is an editor, writer and multi-instrumentalist who has contributed to and edited dozens of area and national periodicals. His works have appeared in All About Jazz, Jazziz, Jazz Times, Down Beat and others. As a professional jazz drummer the author has performed with Charlie Ventura, Milt Buckner, Bernard, Peiffer, Joanie Sommers, and led his own “Jazz for the People” Trios and Quartets in Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

RUCE K AMINSKY is a working musician, which is another name for entrepreneur. His first start-up was at the age of 14 as an electric bassist in a capitalized rock band venture. To diversify his portfolio he took up the acoustic bass at age 19. This led him to a career in jazz and classical music performance, recording and production which he continues to this day. He has performed with jazz artists, Tal Farlow, Jimmy Knepper, Larry Coryell and Bucky Pizzarelli. For 28 years he was a senior production member with the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) working directly with Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea and Dave Holland. He has also recorded solo bass for a line of Honda ca commercials. After receiving his M.M from the Combs College of Music. He expanded his base in music education by teaching and developing curricula at Drexel University, The University of the Arts and Montgomery County Community College.

TOM KOZIC graduated from Whitehall High School. He has not only performed with a virtual “who’s who” of jazz personalities but has also toured with such country stars as Eddie Rabbit and Crystal Gayle. He currently teaches at Moravian, Muhlenberg and Lafayette Colleges.
