THIS BOOKLET PROVIDES IMPORTANT QUANTITATIVE DIMENSIONS OF PENN STATE RESEARCH FOR FISCAL THIS BOOKLET PROVIDES IMPORTANT QUANTITATIVE DIMENSIONS OF PENN STATE RESEARCH FOR FISCAL 2012, AND OFFERS A FEW COMPARISONS WITH PREVIOUS YEARS TO REVEAL LONGER-TERM TRENDS.2012, AND OFFERS A FEW COMPARISONS WITH PREVIOUS YEARS TO REVEAL LONGER-TERM TRENDS.
For example, you will see the steady upward trend in the University’s total R&D expenditures—an increase of 48 percent over the past decade, and a solid indication that our faculty are successfully proposing path-breaking research and development initiatives to federal, state, and private-sector sponsors.
In the subcategory of federal dollars in support of research, the trend is even more dramatic: $507 million in federal support in fi scal 2012, an increase of 80 percent in the last ten years.
Industry-sponsored funding increased to $110 million in fi scal 2012. That we continue to experi-ence increases in both federal and private-sector funding refl ects Penn State’s ability to compete with our peers in attracting research support, and the enviable reputation that the University has earned among various funding sources.
You will also see that seven of our academic colleges, along with the Applied Research Laboratory, each report annual research expenditures greater than $30 million. Those numbers indicate the University’s research portfolio is balanced across academic disciplines. And because we have a bal-anced portfolio, we have successfully implemented an interdisciplinary approach to much of our research and creative work. In fact, collaboration across traditional disciplines and the “invention” of new ways to approach old problems is perhaps our greatest institutional strength.
Research informs our graduate education—now in its 150th year at Penn State—and makes the qual-ity of that learning experience second to none. We continue to attract advanced-degree candidates from all over the world. Research is an integral part of who we are at Penn State, and what we do.
Henry C. Foley Vice President for Research
and Dean of the Graduate School
