1.1. Latar Belakang Masalah
guru sains. Kedua, penggunaan Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar mata
pelajaran sains. Ketiga adalah penggunaan ICT dalam melangsungkan proses
pembelajaran (Suharno, 2008).
I
2
penyelenggaraan pembelajaran sains sesuai dengan karakteristik
pembelajaran di RSBI/SBI.

2.1 Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional Menghadapi E r a Globalisasi
kekayaan sumber daya alam (10%). Lebih lanjut T i m KSPB (Kelompok Studi
Pendidikan Berkualitas, 2008) menyatakan bahwa kunci keberhasilan dalam
perikehidupan masyarakat global adalah masyarakat berbasis pengetahuan
yang mampu menjadi generator pertumbuhan ekonomi. Menurut Suharno
sangat ketat antar bangsa.
Pertama,
Tisher (1972) menyatakan
bah\Va tujuan pendidikan sains adalah to help student survive.
2.2 Kriteria Buku Ajar Sains
ukuran huruf, tata letak, pemilihan kosa kata, struktur kalimat, gaya
penulisan, pemilihan bahan bacaan dan contoh. Dalam beberapa kasus
buku teks SAINS ditulis dengan bahasa orang dewasa sehingga sulit
dsainshami oleh siswa.
5. Isi
D i sinilah
pentingnya reputasi penulis. Penulis yang memiliki reputasi baik di
bidang sains jarang terdapat salah konsep dalam bukunya.
7. Petunjuk untuk melakukan kegiatan
Buku teks pelajaran sains bukanlah sekedar kumpulan informasi
tentang sains.
1. Ilmu sebagai bangunan pengetahuan (body of knowledge), yang meliputi:
a. Menampilkan fakta, konsep, hukum, dan prinsip
b. Menampilkan hipotesis, teori, dan model
2. Ilmu sebagai wahana untuk berpikir
a. Memfasilitasi siswa belajar melalui materi pada bahan ajar
b. Memfasilitasi siswa belajar melalui penggunaan tabel dan carta
c. Memfasilitasi siswa melakukan perhitungan
d. Memfasilitasi siswa memberikan penjelasan terhadap jawaban yang
dikemukakan
I 1
e. Memfasilitasi siswa untuk melakukan eksperimen
f. Memfasilitasi siswa untuk memperoleh informasi dari internet
3. Ilmu sebagai wahana untuk investigasi
a. Menjelaskan bagaimana ilmuwan melakukan eksperimen
b. Menunjukkan sejarah perkembangan ide
c. Menggambarkan dasar empiris dari sains
d. Melakukan pemodelan dalam penggunaan asumsi
e. Menerapkan penjelasan secara induktif maupun deduktif
f. Menunjukkan hubungan sebab akibat
g. Memberikan bukti dan pembuktiannya
h. Menampilkan metode ilmiah dan pemecahan masalah
4. Ilmu dan interaksinya dengan teknologi dan masyarakat
a. Menjelaskan penggunaan sains dan teknologi
b. Menampilkan dampak negatif dari sains dan teknologi
c. Menampilkan isu sosial terkait sains dan teknologi
d. Menjelaskan pekerjaan di bidang sains dan teknologi
Peran Buku ajar dalam Proses Pembelajaran Sains di S B I / R S B I
pembelajaran masih belum maksimal, sehingga keberadaan berbagai bentuk
representasi tersebut masih dirasa belum efektif.

pertama dilakukan penyusunan buku sains terintegrasi. Adapun tujuan khusus
penelitian tahap I ini adalah sebagai berikut:
meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris.

A. Hasil Penelitian
Penyusunan buku melibatkan 8 orang mahasiswa
IPSE (International Program on Science Education) FPMIPA UPI yang sedang
flash yang diberikan oleh instruktur yaitu mahasiswa I lmu Komputer ( I L K O M ) .
Penyelenggaraan workshop dilakukan sebanyak 8 kali selama 3 bulan.

sumber belajar (Kartiwa, 2009; Nurbaety, 2010; Nugraha, 2010; Permana, 2010).
penggunaan electronic book sebagai sumber belajar, diantaranya;
Penggunaan
electronic book mendukung terlaksananya aspek konstruktivisme.
pembelajaran konstruktivisme, yaitu;
pengetahuan sehingga pengetahuannya menjadi semakin luas.
2. Relevansi dan kebermaknaan pengalaman pembelajaran. Disini siswa

ENVIRONMENT MAINTENANCE
What is environment?
Environment is all that surrounding us, including living and non-living things around us. Air,
land, water are non living components of environment. Meanwhile the living things
components of environment are plants, people and animals.
Environment is where we live. Your house, school, garden, river, hills, beach are also our
environment.
Fig. 1
Home and schools are our environment
Human are very dependent to environment. We cannot live if there is no environment. We
get air, water and foods from the environment. Can you imagine if we have to live without
environment? There is no air, no water and no food??
Luckily, everything that environment give are totally free. We do not have to pay, but we
must maintain it, as an expression of gratitude.
But sometimes, many of us only take and use everything from the environment as much as
they can without considering the effects that might happen. The real example is
uncontrolled illegal logging that happened in many forest in our country. This is actually very
harmful for us.
Forests have an important role in providing water
for humans. Dense forests that can hold rainwater
that falls to the ground. Then the rain water
absorbed and retained by the roots of plants, so
that water availability is maintained.
Fig.2 Dense forest can store and hold
water using roots of trees
In the leafless forest - caused by uncontrolled
logging- there is no roots that hold the rainwater
that falls to the ground. The upper ground layer
that containing humus will be also scraped. This is
causing the soil is not fertile anymore. If it is
happened continuously, the soil will not able to
absorb rainwater anymore and it might lead to the
land sliding. Moreover, if the rains happen
continuously, the soil will be changed to become
mud and it is taken along with the falling rainwater and caused large flooding, just like what
happen in Aceh a few months ago. Of course, land
sliding and large flooding is very harmful for
human, even might causing death.
That is only one example of the consequence if we
do not maintain our environment well .

_ Natural environment and built environment
Natural environment are all living and non-living things that occur naturally, where there is
clean air, clean water, and clean food in sufficient quantities. Meanwhile, built environment
refers to the human-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity,
including our home, schools, supermarket, and industries and also supporting infrastructure
such as water supply or energy networks.
Have you ever gone to the forest, where there are still lots of trees and there is not so many
people live there?
How do you feel right there?
Compare to the cities where you live, which one is
better?
In forest area, the air is still clean and fresh. Do you
remember the product of photosynthesis during
the day?
Fig. 5 Forest area can be included to natural
environment, because environment still not too
influenced by human
Yes, tree release oxygen during the day. So the air becomes so
fresh because there are lots of tree that releasing 0 2 . We also can
hear some animal's voice that cannot be heard when we are in
the city, such as singing birds and sounds of cricket. We also can
smell the scent of grass which actually can reduce the stress. And
the population in forest area is still low compare to the
population in the city. SUWr

How about the condition in the city? Of
course it is very different with what we feel,
we see, we hear in the forest area, right?
In the city there are so many buildings and
so many people. The air also feels so hot
during the day in the summer. In some
region it seems like too crowded, where the
population is not balanced with provided
area. Fig. 7

Make conclusion from this research!
Polluted environment
What most human want is the environment that
can be used to perform activities of life, can
become a habitat for many living things, and have
the sufficient natural resources needed for daily
life. We also want a beautiful and convenient
Fig. 8
Beautiful and convenient environment
environment that makes us comfortable to do our activities.
But in fact, the environment around us does not always comply with our wishes. Such as
there is slum housing, the river filled with garbages, and dirty air because of pollution from
factories and motor vehicles. This is what we called as polluted environment.
Fig.10 example of polluted environment: slum housing with much garbage on the river (left), dirty air ca
factories (center) and smoke from cars (right)
Of course that kind of condition makes us uncomfortable to do our activities. As we know air
is a vital need for human and it is one of the main components for life. Because without air,
the various processes of life may not last. Air is needed to breathe. When the air we breathe
is polluted and contains hazardous substances, it will affect the our body, especially our
respiratory organs, so that we could not do our activities well.
Tolerance Level
Each organism might have different habitat with the other. Because, each of them have
different tolerance level (limitations of a physical and environmental conditions). In a
population of human, like us, each person also might have different tolerance level, because
each of us have different characteristic, such as different age, sex and heredity factor. For
instance, teenager like you have stronger body resistance against the cold weather than
what babies have.
So, it can be said that the existence of an organism in an ecosystem depends on their
tolerance level to its ecosystem conditions.
Identif icat ion of a c i d , base, and salt
In daily lite we recognize tilings from their properties or characterstics. How to
identify acid, base, and salt? The properties of a solution can be studied using acid-base
indicator which is color substances that have different colors in acid, base and salt solutions.
To determine a compound as acid, base or neutral, we can use litmus paper, indicator solution
or natural indicator.
Before we start the lesson, let's play the game below :

Indicator Solution
Indicators are substances whose solutions change color due to changes in pH. These
are called acid-base indicators. They are usually weak acids or bases, but their conjugate base
or acid forms have different colors due to differences in their absorption spectra.
Acid base indicator solution is a colored substance that has different colors in acid,
base or neutral solution. In the laboratory, the common indicators are the solution o f
phenolphtalein, methyl red, and methyl orange. The colors o f the indicators are shown in the

windows open. People have to keep at least 2
meters distant, avoiding being downwind.
After some drops, you w i l l see the solution
.suddenly become reddish purple. This
phenomenon is quite surprising because all the
liquids we are using are colorless and transparent,
like water.

becomes red.
Now, io the red-purple fluid you obtained, add some drops of vinegar. What it happens? The liquid becomes colorless again!
Figure - By adding vinegar, the solution becomes again colorless. The picture illustrates the change in progress.

Natur a l I n d i c a t o r s
Many substances mound us that can be used as an indicator o f acid and alkali. For
example, leaf, flower, turmeric, mangosteen skin, and purple cabbage. This is because the
solution o f these materials give a different color on acid and alkaline and neutral. To prove
this, mangosteen skin that has been refined in a neutral state would be purple. However, i f the
added acid solution, the color purple w i l l change to reddish brown. Conversely, i f the alkaline
solution is added, the color o f the skin extract of mangosteen w i l l change from purple to blue-
black. With these color changes, skin extract of mangosteen can be used as an indicator o f
acid and alkali.
Another example o f natural indicators is the extract o f red cabbage. I f it is dropped in
acid, base and neutral solutions, their color wi l l change, as shown in table below

As we have seen, acids and bases have the property o f modifying ihe color o f certain
substances. This is the ease with the juice of the red cabbage. This liquid has a blue-violet
color, but when it comes in contact with acidic substances it becomes red. while in contact
with basic substances it becomes green and even yellow. Let's see how it is possible to use
the juice of the red cabbage to measure the pH of various substances.

the slices and boil for half an hour.
Figure 4 - Pour the juice in a low container.
It is a cabbage which has a red-violet color (figure 1). Buy one o f them and cut it in
little slices (figure 2). Put them in a pot and pour enough water to cover them (figure 3). Boil
for half an hour, then turn off the heat and let the temperature come down. Pour the blue-
violet liquid you have obtained into a large, low container (figure 4). The boiled cabbage
slices are edible and you can use them in a recipe.
Figure - Red cabbage juice mixed with baking soda (left) and with vinegar (right).
On the top. a drop of unmixed juice.
Use of the red cabbage juice as an indicator in the liquid state. Pour some drops of this liquid on a white surface and observe its changes of color when it is mixed with vinegar or with baking soda. You will see that this liquid becomes red in contact with vinegar or lemon juice, while it becomes green in contact with baking soda (figure 9). This behavior is unusual, and later on we will try to explain it.
Pour one centimeter of the red cabbage juice indicator liquid into a transparent glass. Add water up to half of the glass! Now, pour vinegar into the glass and observe the color changes of the liquid. Repeat the experiment by adding, this time, a little baking soda instead of the vinegar. Also in this case, you will see color changes.

F r o m Purple Cabbage
INTRODUCTION:
Acid-base indicators are used in titrations to let you know when the solution has been
neutralized, and has a pH o f about 7. This indicates the end point o f the titration, and
we can then calculate the concentration of our unknown, from the concentration and
volume of the known. We have many acid-base indicators available to us today, but
the first indicators were made from natural compounds.
The indicator that you w i l l be making comes from purple cabbage. And is simply
called cabbage extract indicator.
Part 1: Making the indicator
M A T E R I A L S :
Purple cabbage
Distilled water
250-mL beaker
Ring stand
Large ring
wire gauze
Burner
P R O C E D U R E :
L Take a few leaves o f purple cabbage and tear them into small pieces.
2. Fill a 250-mL beaker about three-fourths full of the cabbage leaf pieces, and add
distilled water to the 200mL mark.
3. Place the beaker on the wire gauze o f a ring stand and heat with a burner to a slow
boil for about 20 minutes. (You can use a hot plate in place o f the burner and ring
stand.)
4. The water w i l l turn from a clear color to a purple color. When the water is very
purple, remove the beaker from the heat. The purple juice which you have made is
cabbage extract indicator, and can be used for acid-base titrations.
5. Pour the cabbage extract indicator solution into a labelled stock bottle. I f you are
going to keep the solution for a while, put it in the refrigerator.
Part 2: Testing the indicator
You now have an indicator which can tell you o f you have a solution that is an acid or
a base, and can help you determine the end point o f a titration. You need to test some
acid and base solutions so you w i l l know what color it turns in each.

You need to breathe to stay alive. But how clean is the air you breathe? I f you breathe dirty air,
you are more likely to develop health problems and become i l l . Plants and animals need clean air
too. A lot of the things that make our lives more comfortable such as cars, electricity and heating,
create bad gases which make the air dirty. The problem of air pollution started with the burning
of coal in homes and factories. Dirty air is called 'polluted air'.
'Air pollution' is what we say to describe all bad gases in the air that we breathe and that are
dangerous for us. But do not worry! Not all gases are bad!
W H Y IS B R E A T H I N G SO I M P O R T A N T ?
Take a few deep breaths. Can you feel your rib cage moving in and
out? This opens up your lungs so that air is sucked in.
In the lungs, a gas called oxygen passes from the air into your
blood. The oxygen is carried in the blood all round your body. You
need oxygen so that you can use the energy in the food you eat. It is
the oxygen in the air that helps keep you alive.
BACK TO T H E PAST
500 years ago in Britain, the burning o f coal was increasing in cities
like London. Coal was used in factories and also used to heat homes.
Coal, when burnt makes a lot of smoke, which makes the air very
dirty.
About 200 years ago, the Industrial Revolution began in
Britain. Factories were built, and even more coal was
burnt. Air pollution was becoming a really big problem,
- especially when the weather was foggy. With foggy
conditions and light winds the smoke or air pollution covered the whole city, and
would not move.
Smoke and fog together create smog.
Smog was a big problem in the winter. Because of the cold weather, more coal was burnt to
warm houses and this made more smoke.
When smog was stuck over a city, i i became really hard lo breathe and see clear!). In 1952. the
Great London Smog occurred and more than 4000 people died
because of the smog!
New laws were created from this catastrophe in 1956 and 1968, so that
it would not happen again. These laws are called the 'Clean Ai r Acts'.
These laws were made so that air would become cleaner. The laws
encouraged people to use less coal or use cleaner coal in their homes
and switch to other fuels such as gas. Factories started using tall
chimneys so that the smoke would go high up in the sky and no longer
cover cities, and new factories were built outside cities in the
countryside. Smog occurred less often and the air became cleaner.
W H A T IS TODAY'S A I R P O L L U T I O N L I K E ?
Have you ever noticed that the air in a city smells different from
air in the country? One of the reasons is that exhausts from
vehicles give off fumes, or gases, which can poison
you.
Today, when we think of air pollution, we should
think of transport, especially cars. Today there are
about 23 million vehicles on the road in Britain, and
20 million of them are cars! The fuel they use - petrol and diesel - releases a lot of
pollution in the air.
The car exhausts eject a lot of bad gases, which create air
pollution. These gases can be very dangerous for children. Although the
fuels are becoming cleaner, it will not be making that much difference
because there are more and more cars.
There is less pollution from coal, but today's modern world
still creates air pollution. Today, air pollution has not really
fallen, because new bad gases are released in the air, and there
are a lot of them.
Transport is not the only reason why we have air
pollution. Factories also release bad gases in the air,
even with the 'Clean Air Acts', it still causes a lot o f air
pollution. This air pollution that they make is the main
cause of acid rain (see Acid Rain).
WHAT A R E T H E S E BAD G A S E S ?
Gases from vehicles:
Carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a gas that pollutes the air, and is mainly
released by cars and other vehicles. It has no colour or smell.
Nitrogen oxides
Nitrogen oxides are emitted from vehicles, like cars and trucks.
During rush hour periods, a lot more is released in the air. Nitrogen oxides are also emitted from
power stations. These gases also make acid rain.
Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are produced when petrol is not fully burnt. They are one o f the causes o f modern-
day smog. _ ,.2;
Particulates
Particulates are very small particles, like soot, dust and fumes that are
released in the air. They are caused by vehicles, factories and smoke from
homes burning coal for heating.
Gases from factories:
Nitrogen Oxides (see above)
Sulphur dioxide
Sulphur dioxide has no colour. Most o f it is released by power stations. It
causes acid rain when mixing with water in the air.
AIR P O L L U T I O N I N S I D E H O M E S
We spend a large part of our lives at home and it does not often
cross our mind that the air we are breathing may be polluted.
Pollution inside homes is called 'indoor air
pollution'.
Indoor air pollution is usually very low.
But a lot of things can increase it.
Fresh paint is a cause of indoor air pollution and so is the burning of
fuels such as coal and gas, in heaters, stoves and ovens.
- Bm one ol (lie main causes of indoor air pollution is smoking. .Smoking cigarettes and tobacco
can he very dangerous for health. The poison in the smoke can cause heart
problems, lung cancer and other lung diseases. I f a woman smokes when
she is pregnant, her baby wil l probably be smaller and become i l l .
Cigarette smoke is dangerous for people smoking but also for those who
do not! Breathing in air, which contains other people's smoke, can cause
you the same health problems, for example lung
cancer.
To reduce 'indoor air pollution', make sure the
room is well ventilated while painting. Try ventilating your home often,
you can open windows or use a fan. And i f your parents or friends smoke,
ask them to smoke outside. And best o f all N E V E R S T A R T

The Earth is wrapped in a blanket of air called the 'atmosphere', which is made up o f several
layers of gases. The sun is much hotter than the Earth and it gives o f f rays o f heat (radiation) that
travel through the atmosphere and reach the Earth. The rays of the sun warm the Earth, and heat
from the Earth then travels back into the atmosphere. The gases in the
atmosphere stop some of the heat from escaping into space. These
gases are called greenhouse gases and the natural process between the
sun, the atmosphere and the Earth is called the 'Greenhouse Effect',
because it works the same way as a greenhouse. The windows of a
greenhouse play the same role as the gases in the atmosphere, keeping
some of the heat inside the greenhouse.
THE N A T U R A L GREENHOUSE EFFECT
The atmosphere has a number o f gases, often in tiny amounts, which
trap the heat given out by the Earth.
To make sure that the Earth's temperature remains constant, the balance
of these gases in the atmosphere must not be upset.
- 2
The GREENHOUSE GASES are very important and are mainly:
water vapour
occurs naturally in the atmosphere.
carbon dioxide
produced naturally when people and animals breathe. Plants and trees absorb carbon dioxide to
live. Volcanoes also produce this gas. Carbon dioxide is not the same as carbon monoxide (See
Air Quality)
methane
comes from cattle as they digest their food. The gas also comes from fields where rice is grown
in paddy fields.
nitrous oxide
when plants die and rot, nitrous oxide is produced.
ozone
occurs naturally in the atmosphere.

Some of the activities of man also produce greenhouse gases. These gases keep increasing in the
atmosphere. The balance of the greenhouse gases changes and this has effects on the whole of
the planet.
Burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and natural gas - releases carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere. Cutting down and burning trees also
produces a lot of carbon dioxide.
large amounts o f heat.
A group of greenhouse gases called the
chlorofluorocarbons, - which are usually
called CFCs, because the other word is
much too long! - have been used in
aerosols, such as hairspray cans, fridges and in making foam
plastics. They are found in small amounts in the atmosphere. They
are dangerous greenhouse gases because small amounts can trap
Because there are more and more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere,
more heat is trapped which makes the Earth warmer. This is known as
GLOBAL WARMING.
A lot of scientists agree that man's activities are
making the natural greenhouse effect stronger. I f we
carry on polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse
gases, it wi l l have very dangerous effects on the
Earth.
T H E E F F E C T S
With more heat trapped on Earth, the planet wil l become warmer, which
means the weather all over Earth wil l change. For example, summers
will gel hotter, and winters too. This may seem a good idea, but the
conditions we are living in are perfect for life, and a large rise in
temperature could be terrible for us and for any other living thing on
Earth.
At the moment, it is difficult for scientists to say how big the changes
will be and where the worse effects wil l occur.
The Weather
'* A
\ I
?: i v y
In Britain, winter and summer temperatures wi l l increase and the
weather wil l be warmer. In winter it may also rain more but in
summer it may become drier.
In other parts o f the world, the effects wi l l be different,
some places wi l l become drier and others wi l l be wetter.
Although most areas will be warmer, some areas wi l l
become cooler. There may be many storms, floods and drought, but we do not know which areas
of the world wil l be affected.
All over the world, these weather changes wi l l affect the kind o f crop that
can be grown. Plants, animals and even people may find it difficult to
survive in different conditions.
Sea Levels
Higher temperatures will make the water o f the seas and oceans
expand. Ice melting in the Antarctic and Greenland wil l flow into the
sea.
A l l over the world, sea levels may rise, perhaps by as much as 20 to
40 cm, by the beginning of the next century.
Higher sea levels wi l l threaten the low-lying coastal
areas of the world, such as the Netherlands and Bangladesh. Throughout the
world, millions o f people and areas o f land wi l l be at danger from flooding. Many
people will have to leave their homes and large areas of farmland w i l l be ruined
because of floods. In Britain, East Anglia and the Thames estuary w i l l be at risk
from the rising sea.
Farming
The changes in the weather wi l l affect the types o f crops grown in
different parts of the world. Some crops, such as wheat and rice grow
better in higher temperatures, but other plants, such as maize and
sugarcane do not. Changes in the amount o f rainfall wi l l also affect
how many plants grow.
The effect o f a change in the weather on plant growth may
lead to some countries not having enough food. Brazil, parts
of Africa, south-east Asia and China w i l l be affected the
most and many people could suffer from hunger.
Water
Everywhere in the world, there is a big
demand for water and in many regions,
such as the Sahara in Africa, there is not
enough water for the people. Changes in-
the weather will bring more rain in some countries, but others wi l l have less
In Britain, the Southeast wil l be at risk from drought.
UN D A N G E R !
lants & Animals
It has taken million of years for life to become used to the
conditions on Earth. As weather and temperature changes, the
homes of plants and animals wi l l be affected all
over the world.
For example, polar bears and seals, wi l l have to
find new land for hunting and living, i f the ice in the
Arctic melts.
Many animals and plants may not be able to cope with
these changes and could die. This could cause the loss o f
some animal and plant species in certain areas of the world
or everywhere on Earth.
People
The changes in climate wi l l affect everyone,
but some populations wi l l be at greater risk. For example, countries
whose coastal regions have a large population, such as Egypt and
China, may see whole populations move inland to avoid flood
risk areas. The effect on people will depend on how well we can
adapt to the changes and how much we can do to reduce climate
change in the world.
Rain is very important for life. A l l living things need water to live, even people.
Rain brings us the water we need. But in many places in the world even where you live, rain has
become a menace.
Because of pollution in the air, acid gases from lactones, cars and homes, the rain is becoming
dangerous for the life o f every living creature.
This rain is known as 'acid rain ' .
W H A T IS A C I D RAIN?
Acid gases are produced when fossil fuels like coal and oil are
burned in power stations, factories and in our own homes. Most o f
these acid gases are blown into the sky, and when they mix with the
clouds it can cause rain - or snow, sleet, fog. mist or hail - to become
more acidic.
The opposites of acid are alkalis; for example, toothpaste and baking
powder are both alkalis. Strong alkalis can also be dangerous, such as
ammonia and bleach.
Lemon juice, vinegar and cola are all acidic. Rain is naturally acidic,
but acid gases make it even more acidic, sometimes as acid as
lemon!
Nature can also produce acid gases, such as volcanoes.
When they erupt, the smoke that comes out of the crater
is also full o f acid gases.
H O W D O W E M E A S U R E A C I D I T Y ?
There is a special scale called the pH scale that measures the
strength o f acids and alkalis. A low pH number means
something is acid. A high number means something is alkali.
And something in the middle is called neutral.
Acidity can be tested using litmus paper.
Usually rain is a little acidic, and has pH of about 5.5, i f the pH
of rainfall is less than 5.5, then the rain is probably polluted by
acid gases.
Acids turn litmus paper red, and alkalis turn it blue. With a special paper called
universal indicator, you can test levels of acidity.
WHAT ARK T H E MAIN G A S E S T H A I C A U S E A C I D R A I N ?
When we burn fuels, chemicals called 'sulphur' and 'nitrogen' are released into
the air. Once in the air, they mix with water in the air - rain, snow, etc - and
are transformed into different chemicals called 'sulphur dioxide' and 'nitrogen
oxides', which can be very dangerous for plants, animals and people. Most of
the 'sulphur' comes from power stations, which make electricity, and also from
volcanoes. Most of the 'nitrogen oxides' come from car and truck exhausts.
We call 'air pollution' the bad gases that we produce and release in the air.
'Sulphur dioxide' and 'nitrogen oxides' are the most important causes o f acid rain.
A P R O B L E M A L L O V E R T H E W O R L D
Air pollution can be carried over long distances. When acid gases
are released, they go high up in the sky, and then they are pushed
by strong winds towards other
countries. 9 A .
V
gem The acid rain in Sweden is caused
by air pollution in Britain and other countries of Europe. The
pollution produced in Britain ends up mostly in Scandinavia -
countries in northern Europe including Sweden, Norway and
Denmark.
In the USA, the winds blow the air pollution to certain areas in Canada.
HOW BAD IS A C I D R A I N ?
When rain is acidic, it affects what it falls on: trees, lakes, buildings
and farmland. Sometimes rain is not very acidic and does not cause a
lot of problems, but when it is acidic, it can be very harmful to the
environment.
TREES A N D PLANTS
Acid rain can have terrible effects on a forest.
The acid takes away important minerals from the leaves and the soil.
Minerals are like \ itamins for trees and plants. Without them, trees and plants cannot grow
properly. The> lose their leaves and become very weak. They are no longer strong enough to
fight against illnesses and frost. They become very i l l and can even die.
Some soils are alkaline, when acid rain falls on them the acid becomes neutral. Plants and trees
living on these soils are not in any big danger..
LAKES AND WATER LIFE
Acid rain has a terrible effect on water life. Even i f the acid rain
does not fall straight into the lake, for example, it may enter from
rivers and streams. Some of the life in the lake such as fish and
plants may end up dying, because they cannot survive in acidic
lakes.
Thousands of lakes in Scandinavia have no more life in them. They
have received so much acid rain for so many years, because of the
winds pushing the acid gases, that nothing can survive.
You can recognise a lake dead from acid rain by its clean and crystal clear water. But they look
clean because there is very little living in them anymore. Tiny plants and animals are mostly
unable to survive..

Particulates - very small particles of debris found in some of the air
pollution - are one of the main causes o f health problems. In towns and
cities, these are released mainly by diesel engines from cars and trucks.
V
When we breathe in air pollution, these ven line particulates can easily enter our body, where
they can cause breathing problems, and over time even cause cancer.
Water we drink from taps can be contaminated by acid rain, which can damage the brain..
BUILDINGS
Acid rain can also ruin buildings because the acid eats into metal and
stone. It also damages stained glass and plastics. Some types o f building
materials are softer than others, and it is the softer ones which are most
affected by acid rain. Sandstone and limestone are examples of stone
which are fairly soft and are damaged easily. Granite is an example of a
harder stone that can resist the effects o f acid rain.
In many places in the world, ancient and famous buildings and
monuments are affected by acid rain. For example, the Statue of Liberty
in New York. USA, has had to be restored because of acid rain damage. Buildings are naturally
eroded by rain, wind, frost and the sun, but when acidic gases are present, it speeds up the
erosion.
The Earth is wrapped in a blanket o f air called the 'atmosphere1, which is made up of several
layers. About 19-30 kilometres above the Earth is a layer o f gas called ozone, which is a form of
oxygen. Ozone is produced naturally in the atmosphere.
WHY DO W E H A V E AN O Z O N E L A Y E R ?
The ozone layer is very important because it stops too many of the sun's 'ultra-
violet rays' (UV rays) getting through to the Earth - these are the rays that
cause our skin to tan. Too much UV can cause skin cancer and wi l l also harm
all plants and animals. Life on Earth could not exist without the protective
shield of the ozone layer.

Every spring, a hole as big as the USA develops in
the ozone layer over Antarctica, in the South Pole. A smaller hole
develops each year over the Arctic, at the North Pole. And there are
signs that the ozone layer is getting thinner all over the
planet.
Scientists have discovered that the ozone hole over
Antarctica started in 1979, and that the ozone layer
generally started to get thin in the early 1980s.
Thejpss of the ozone layer occurs when more ozone is being destroyed than nature is creating.
W H A T CAUSES THE OZONE HOLE?
One group of gases is particularly likely to damage the ozone layer
These gases are called CFCs, Chloro-Fluoro-Carbons.
CFCs are used in some spray cans to force the contents out o f
the can.
They are also used in refrigerators, air
some fire extinguishers. They are
poisonous and do not catch fire.
