yPreS 1914: LanGemarckJack Sheldon and Nigel Cave
authors nigel cave and Jack Sheldon tell thestory of the men who fought over theunremarkable undulating ground that was tobecome firmly placed in British nationalconscience ever afterwards. when, in october1914, the newly created German Fourth armyattacked west to seize crossings over the yser, prior to sweeping south in an attempt tosurround the BeF, two things prevented it. to thenorth, it was the efforts of the Belgian army, reinforced by French troops, coupled withcontrolled flooding of the polders but, furthersouth, the truly heroic defence of Langemarck, forthree days by the BeF and then by the Frencharmy, was of decisive importance. the villagestood as a bulwark against any further advance tothe river or the town of ypres. here the Germanregiments bled to death in the face of resoluteallied defence and any remaining hope of forcinga decision in the west turned to dust.
yPreS 1914: meSSineSNigel Cave and Jack Sheldon
at the end of october 1914 an increasinglydesperate Falkenhayn, aware that his offensive inFlanders had stalled, decided to make one finaleffort to break through the allied lines south ofypres. Pulling together a large strike force, the so-called army Group Fabeck, he launched a violentoffensive designed to capture the messines ridgeand to use this dominating terrain as aspringboard for a further advance. inadequatelyresourced, assembled in a rush, this thrust wassoon in trouble. confused fighting in the woodedareas to the south of the menin road slowed theadvance and initial attempts to gain a foothold onthe ridge failed. a supreme effort by the men ofthe 26th infantry division ultimately broughtabout the capture of the town of messines andsimilar heroics by the Bavarian 6th reservedivision led to the fall of wytschaete, but it wasall in vain. yet again a valiant allied defence hadbuckled, but not broken.
retreat oF i corPS 1914Jerry Murland
this new title looks at the effect of the increasingwidth of gap that existed between the two corpsof the BeF, the apparent impotence of Sir JohnFrench and GhQ that was revealed as the retreatcontinued and the essential role of the regimentalofficer in keeping units together.the book isdivided into 3 stages and each stage is the subjectof a detailed car tour that takes the battlefieldtourist to each of the locations described above.the book is supported by over 120 maps andphotographs and two appendices.

waLkinG the SaLient Paul Reed
here we have a series of walks designed to takethe visitor across this most heavily fought-overpart of the western Front. the ‘immortal salient’has had its fair share of guide books, but this onetakes the reader across the landscape in the waythat ‘tommy’ would have seen it on foot. Paulreed is a leading military historian specialising inthe two world wars. he has worked as aresearcher and battlefield guide, and is the authorof several books on the great war.
aiSne 1918David Blanchard
this battlefield guide and history will focusmainly on the events of attack that fell on theBritish sector of the front between the 27th – 1stJune 1918, although the offensive which alsobefell the French forces will not be totallyneglected. this area had been a French held sectorsince 1915 and the French had fought one of itsmajor engagements of the war here in 1917, theill-fated nivelle offensive. French monumentsand cemeteries dominate the landscape. theBritish were also here in 1914, and they too haveleft reminders of their relative brief presence.however, the actions fought here early in the wartend to be found mainly to the west of the sector.
weLSh on the SommeMichael Renshaw
the Battle for mametz wood is normallyassociated with the endeavours of the 38th welshdivision and was the first of those great battlesto secure possession of the woodlands of theSomme. the author looks at events after the 1stJuly, but also relates the story of the 17thnorthern division who attacked the quadrangle,a defensive system guarding the westernapproaches to the wood. also related is thedemise of both generals commanding thesedivisions who were sent home. written by anexperienced and respected author, this bookcovers a neglected yet accessible area on theSomme front.

at 9.30am on 21 march 1918, the lastgreat battle of the First world warcommenced when three Germanarmies struck a massive blow againstthe weak divisions of the British thirdand Fifth armies. it was the first day ofwhat the Germans called thekaiserschlacht (‘the kaiser’s Battle’),the series of attacks that were intendedto break the deadlock on the westernFront, knock the British army out ofthe war, and finally bring victory toGermany. in the event the cost of thegamble was so heavy that once theassault faltered, it remained for theallies to push the exhausted Germanarmies back and the war was at lastover.

SniPer JackSonFrederick Sleath
although it reads as a novel, SniperJackson can be justifiably viewed as‘faction’ weaving true events arounda mythical character. this was acommonplace method of writing at atime when many serving or ex-soldiers did not want individuals orevents in their books to be identified, and many used pseudonyms toconceal their identities.
Germany’S hiGh SeaFLeet in the FirStworLd war Admiral Reinhard Scheer
in his own account of the war in thenorth Sea, first published in 1920,admiral Scheer, the Germancommander at Jutland, gives his ownexplanation for the failure of eitherfleet to achieve the decisive victoryexpected of it, particularly the failureof his own operation plans thatresulted in the battle of Jutland. thisbook is an invaluable account of oneof the most important theatres of theFirst world war, written by one of itsmost senior commanders.
FataL FortniGhtDuncan Marlor
numerous books have beenpublished about the First world warbut few have focused on themachinations in the Britishparliament and the role it played inthe decision to go to war. Britain, after all, could not have entered theconflict without clear approval frommPs. one hundred years on, FatalFortnight re-examines the argumentswhich Parliament heard againstBritish war entry and reflects on howthe world might have been had thedecision gone a different way.
over the toPPeter Tsouras, Spencer Jones
although separated from the modernreader by a full century, the Firstworld war continues to generatecontroversy and interest as the greatevent upon which modern historypivoted. this thought-provokingbook explores ten alternate scenariosin which the course of the war ischanged forever. how would the warhave changed had the Germans notattacked France but turned theirmain thrust against russia; or hadthe Greeks joined the allies atGallipoli? what if the americansintervened in 1915, rather 1917?expertly written by leading militaryhistorians, this is a compelling andcredible look at what might havebeen.

the naval story of the First worldwar is so often told in relation the thenorth Sea and the war in europe, butin this new book the authorconcentrates on the royal navy’soffensive operations further afieldand argues that they were not, asoften portrayed, unnecessarysideshows but absolutely critical toBritain’s very survival. a finelyresearched and written book for bothnaval enthusiasts and historians.
FiGhtinG the Greatwar at SeaNorman Friedman
this radical new book concentrateson the way in which each side triedto use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing it describes rapidwartime changes not only in shipand weapon technology but also inthe way naval warfare was envisagedand fought. combat produced manysurprises: some, like the impact ofthe mine and torpedo, are familiar, but this book also brings to lightmany previously unexploredsubjects, like creative new tacticalpractices and improved commandand control.
From imPeriaLSPLendoUr tointernmentNicolas Wolz
this important new work describeshow the imperial German navy, which had expanded to become oneof the great maritime forces in theworld, second only to the royalnavy, proved, with the exception ofits submarines, to be largelyineffective throughout the years ofconflict. this is a fascinating andperceptive analysis of a whole era,and it contributes substantially to ourunderstanding of the war and itsconsequences – consequences, sadly, that helped pave the way for thethird reich.
the hoodBattaLionLeonard Sellers
the hood Battalion saw some of thefiercest fighting of the First worldwar, particularly at antwerp, in theGallipoli campaign and then againon the western Front at the ancre, atGavrelle, and at Passchendaele. LenSellers, whose interest in the hoodBattalion was first aroused when hediscovered that his great-uncle hadserved with them, lets theparticipants tell their own story, having expended prodigious labourin unearthing the many first-handaccounts of the hood’s exploitsincluded in this book. it is indeed atale told by heroes.

this collection of thought-provokingessays by arguably the 20th century’sgreatest naval historian was firstpublished in 1974, but theircontinuing relevance fully justifiesthis reprint. it opens with astimulating reappraisal of the navalattack on the dardanelles, the successof which would have made thedisastrous Gallipoli land campaignthat followed completelyunnecessary. marder identifies anumber of relatively minor issuesthat made a failure of what was inreality a great strategic opportunityto shorten the war.

the third volume deals with thecontroversial clash between theGerman high Seas fleet and theBritish Grand Fleet and BattlecruiserFleet at Jutland and its immediateaftermath, and the author’s intricatecharting of this great battle is stillrecognised and a major step forwardin our understanding of the events.
From thedreadnoUGht toScaPa FLowArthur Marder
the fourth volume covers the periodfrom Jellicoe’s arrival at theadmiralty to deal with the U-boatmenace until his dismissal a yearlater. mounting losses brought aboutthe introduction of the convoysystem and the turn of the tide inanti-submarine warfare. the volumealso looks at the beginnings of navalaviation.
From thedreadnoUGht toScaPa FLowArthur Marder
this last volume describes the royalnavy’s final triumph. the convoysystem brought rewards and the USnavy arrived in european waters.the striking 1918 raid on Zeebruggewas a big morale booster, and innovember 1918 Beatty received thesurrender of the German high SeasFleet. in June the following year theGermand scuttled their fleet at ScapaFlow and so came to an end a majorera in naval history.

the fighting in the Gallipoli or dardanellescampaign began in 1915 as a purely naval affairundertaken partly at the instigation of winstonchurchill, who, as First Lord of the admiralty, had entertained plans of capturing thedardanelles as early as September 1914. it was theroyal navy that bore the brunt of the initialaction, supported by the French and with minorcontributions from the russian and australianfleets.
on 3 november 1914, churchill ordered thefirst British attack on the dardanelles followingthe opening of hostilities between ottoman andrussian empires. the British attack was carriedout by battle cruisers of carden’s mediterraneanSquadron, hmS indomitable and hmSindefatigable, as well as two French battleships.this attack actually took place before a formaldeclaration of war had been made by Britainagainst the ottoman empire. royal navysubmarines had already been operating in theregion.
when the naval operations failed, a fullinvasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula was launched.the bitter fighting that followed resonatedprofoundly among all nations involved.

the Gallipoli campaign is generally viewed as adisastrous failure of the First world war, inadequately redeemed by the heroism of thesoldiers and sailors who were involved in thefighting. But before the first landings were made, the concept of a strike at the dardanelles seemedto offer a short cut to victory in a war withoutprospect of end. what fuelled and what drainedmorale during the eight months of extraordinaryhuman endeavour? a balanced evaluation of theGallipoli gamble, and of the political and militaryleadership, are the challenging tasks which PeterLiddle sets himself in his new study of thecampaign and the experience of the men whoserved in it.

napoleon Bonaparte isoften credited withsaying that ‘an army marches on itsstomach’. a hundred years after histime, the soldiers of the Great warwould do little marching. instead, they would fight their battles fromcold, muddy trenches, looking outacross no man’s Land towardsanother set of trenches that housedthe enemy. it is one of the remarkablesuccesses of the war that they rarelywent hungry.

the book’s representation of haig isunremittingly positive; he is theBritish commander who rose to newheights with each succeeding crisis &brought us in the end to victory.duncan became aware, that in recentyears many writers have presented tothe public a portrait of haig which isso distorted as to be essentially false.this personal memoir is thereforedesigned to redress the balance.
the FateFUL BattLeLineEdited by Michael Glover
the diaries of front-line soldiers ofthe Great war are relativelycommonplace; contemporarydrawings and paintings, other thanthose by the official war artists, areless so. what is extraordinary, evenunique, about the Fateful Battle Lineis that it combines a journal ofinfantry service on the western Frontwith sketches and finished workmade at the time, often illustratingplaces, people and incident from thetext.

of all the daring Pow escape storiesthat have come to light in the last 100years and immortalized by StevemcQueen in the film the Greatescape, the story of J.L. hardy has tobe one of the most remarkable. aPow for three-and-a-half years, hardy made no less than twelveescape attempts while imprisoned bythe Germans in the First world war, five of which being successful.written in hardy’s own words, thisbook reads like a wartime thriller orhollywood screenplay and his Greatwar story makes for fascinatingreading.

charlie ("Ginger") Byrne was atypical young "tommy" who had noliking or aptitude for writing, but atthe age of 82, sound in body andhaving a mind blessed with totalrecall, he was persuaded to tell hisstory to an interested and observantlistener. Joy cave has achieved thetransition into print of charlie’s war,set down in the form in which herelated it, with an addedcommentary on the larger events inwhich, like so many of hisgeneration, this humble soldierfound himself caught up.

the book examines the impact whichthe Great war had on the PublicSchools and the sacrificialcontribution made to the victorywhich came in 1918. the warconsumed about a fifth of all thepublic schoolboys who fought, whilethe survivors were scarred by theloss of so many friends. Based largelyon source material from schoolarchives and histories, it looks atschool life in those war years, boyswith their futures on hold and theprospect of death always very close.

a century ago General Joffre, as chiefof the French General Staff, led thearmies that blocked the Germaninvasion at the First Battle of themarne. he saved Paris fromoccupation and France from probabledefeat. his calm demeanour whenfaced with a disaster, his ruthlessdismissal of incompetentsubordinates, and his skilledredeployment of his forces contributedto a historic victory. andré Bourachot,in this lucid and highly readable studyof Joffre’s career, focuses on hisperformance during the openingphase of the Great war. he offers afresh and carefully considered view ofthe man and the soldier.

the battles fought by theBritish army in 1915, inthe second year of the First worldwar, are less well known than thosefought immediately after theoutbreak of war in 1914 and thosethat followed in 1916 whichculminated in the Battle of theSomme. But the fighting at aubersridge, Festubert, neuve chapelleand Loos was just as severe – as wasthe 1916 battle at Fromelles – and thebattlefields are just as interesting toexplore today. this volume in theBattle Lines series is the perfect guideto them.

Surprisingly, this is the firstbiography of this most remarkableman, now printed in paperbackformat, for which ann clayton hasbeen given access to all the familypapers. these include hundreds ofhis letters, but she has also uneartheeye-witness accounts of his braverywhich, typically, he was at pains togloss over. this is indeed a thrillingstory of a life lived to the full by aman who sought little for himself, but having been blessed with afortunate birthright, only wanted torepay the debt.
Poetry and mythSoF the Great warMartin Stephen
Poetry and myths of the Great warexamines the various myths thathave grown up around the war. itexplores the historical andsociological myths of the edwardianSummer, the supposedly banalnature poetry of the pre-warGeorgian poets and the image of theBritish public schools as factories forunthinking cannon-fodder. itanalyses the top command of theBritish army and the idea that theBritish were ‘lions led by donkeys’.Using contemporary material, itexamines the life, mood and moraleof junior officers and private soldiers.

this is much more than just anotherbook to add to the thousands on theGreat war. it sets out to fill a gap.written for the layman by a layman(who is also an articulate andexperienced battlefield guide) itsummarises the key events andcontributions of key individuals, some well, others unknown but witha story to tell. to get a true picture ofthis monumental event in history, itis necessary to grasp thefundamentals, be they military, political, social or simply human. theslaughters at verdun, Somme andPasschendaele are no more thanstatistics without the stories of thosethat fought, drowned and died there.

when the war was declared inaugust 1914, one of the first acts tobe implemented by the politiciansand military was a strict censorshipon the newspapers. as winstonchurchill said: “the war is going tobe fought in a fog and the best placefor correspondence about the war isLondon, the military sought to haveone of their officers, dubbed“eyewitness”, to be the officialspokesman to enable them to controlwhat the newspapers could print.Later, diaries and letters revealedhow many of them really felt andthey had to bear the post-war shameof not writing the truth.
rePortinG theGreat warStuart Hylton
the Great war of 1914–1918 was theworld’s first total conflict. it drew thewhole population into the war effortas never before. the armed forcesrecruited on a scale that waspreviously unimaginable, and themunitions industries drew more andmore citizens into the labour market.the entire national economy wasthrown onto a war footing. the localnewspapers of those years provide aunique picture of these momentouschanges, and reporting the Greatwar uses their words to recapture theexperience of the time.

Letters from the trenches revealswhat people really thought and feltduring the conflict and covers allsocial classes and groups – fromofficers to conscripts, servicewomento conscientious objectors. among the million plus British andempire soldiers that fell in theslaughter of the Great war were anelite band of international rugbyplayers.
tragically, over 130 ‘caps’ fromengland, Scotland, wales, ireland, australia, new Zealand and Southafrica – and France - lost their liveson land, in the air and at sea.

when the call to arms was made in1914 and the years of war thatfollowed, it was answered in drovesby young men including test andFirst class cricketers. the machineguns and gas of the western Frontand other theatres did notdiscriminate and many hundreds ofthese star performers perishedalongside their lesser knowncomrades. the author has researchedthe lives and deaths of over 200 topclass cricketers who made theultimate sacrifice. he includes notjust British players but those from theempire. the enormity of the horrorand wholesale loss of life during theGreat war is well demonstrated bythese moving biographies.

Clarence (Clarrie) Wallach was born in November 1889 at Bondi Beach, Sydney,
Australia, the son of Henry and Mary Wallach of 31, Ocean Street, Bondi, New South
Wales. Clarence was one of eight boys all born towards the end of the nineteenth
century. The family was of German origin. They all attended Sydney Grammar School
and before the war were active in surf life-saving at Bondi Beach and Maroubra Beach
Surf Life-saving Clubs. Wallach played for Sydney Grammar School and Eastern
Suburbs RUFC, where he was a lock number eight. He made eight state representative
1914 for Australia.
Wallach enlisted as a private (706) in 19th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force on 7
May 1915. After training he left Sydney with the rest of the battalion on 2 June 1915.
Following further training in Egypt he landed at Anzac Cove on 21 August and was
soon in action, taking part in the attack on Hill 60. On the death of Corporal Berry he
was promoted to replace him on 12 September 1915. Hearing from his friend and fellow
international William Tasker (killed in action on 9 August 1918) about the deaths of his
friends, and Eastern Suburbs club-mates, Harold George and Fred Thompson, Wallach
wrote a letter home which was later published in the sporting magazine The Referee:
We arrived at Heliopolis about three weeks ago. We have been in some pretty solid
work, but expect to go into the real stuff next week. All the rugby union men are
well here, from the Major down to the privates. Twit Tasker told me how Harold
George died the death of deaths – a hero’s – never beaten till the whistle went.
Wallach formed part of the rearguard when the peninsula was evacuated and was
one of the last men to leave Gallipoli. Shortly after arriving in France he received his
commission (24 February 1916) as second lieutenant. He was once again soon in the
trench raid for which he was mentioned in General Birdwood’s despatches. He was
promoted to lieutenant on 21 August 1916.
On 26 September 1916 it was announced in the that Wallach had
been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. The citation read:
For conspicuous gallantry during operations. Under a very heavy bombardment
which lasted forty-eight hours, after his company commander had been killed and
the company had suffered severely, he took command and steadied the men by his
He was appointed adjutant on 3 April 1917 and then promoted captain on 17 August
1917. He named the trench he occupied at Pozieres ‘Blancmange Trench’ because it
changed shape every time he visited it.
In 1918 Wallach, with the 19th Battalion, helped to repel Ludendorff ’s big offensive
which had been launched on 21 March. It was Germany’s last chance for victory and
the German High Command knew it. On 7 April 1918, during this offensive, Clarrie
sustained the wounds that eventually killed him. In the very same action around
Hangard Wood Lieutenant Percy Storkey earned the Victoria Cross.
The attack, supported by a barrage was to go in at 4.55am on 7 April, a cold and
rainy night. Something went wrong on Wallach’s front and no barrage fell ahead of
him. He nonetheless led his men across 400 yards of open country toward the wood.
German machine gunners, untouched by shells, opened up. By the time the company
reached the edge of the wood one man in four had been hit. Wallach fell with wounds
He pushed into undergrowth with eleven men trying to get behind the Germans.
They surprised an enemy position containing eighty to a hundred men, driving them
machine gun.
Wallach had suffered a compound fracture of his left leg. Gas gangrene set in and
doctors amputated the limb. His temperature soared to 105 degrees and he was given
a blood transfusion to try to save the other leg but eventually it had to come off, too.
Wallach began to weaken: the shock was too great. He died on 22 April, aged twenty-
eight. He is buried in the Etretat Churchyard Extension in Etretat France (II,D.1).

Gary Sheffield is one of the mostversatile and stimulating of militaryhistorians at work today. For 25years, in a series of perceptive booksand articles, he has examined theFirst world war from many angles –from the point of view of thepoliticians and the high commandthrough to the junior officers andother ranks in the front line. moraleand command presents in a singlevolume a range of his shorter work, and it shows his scholarship at itsbest.
command on theweStern FrontRobin Prior & Trevor Wilson
this is a history of world war i, seenthrough the eyes of Sir henryrawlinson, a middle-rankingcommander who frequently actedunder General haig. By examiningrawlinson’s role in the war, theauthors are able to follow the actualevents of the battlefield and showhow they related to the strategies ofthe high command.
the conFUSion oFcommandDan Snow & Mark Pottle
the never-before-published papers ofGeneral Sir thomas d--oyly Snowprovide a remarkable insight into themindset of the Great warcommanders. despite being severelyinjured during the First Battle of themarne – when his horse fell androlled over him, cracking his pelvis –Snow served at some of the mostimportant battles of the westernFront.

the PaLS BattaLionS
the ‘Pals” battalions were a phenomenon of the Great war, never repeatedsince. Under Lord derby’s scheme, and in response to kitchener’s famouscall for a million volunteers, local communities raised (and initially oftenpaid for) entire battalions for service on the western Front. their experiencewas all too frequently tragic, as men who had known each other all theirlives, had worked, volunteered, a-nd trained together, and had shipped toFrance together, encountered the first full fury of modern battle on theSomme in July 1916. many of the Pals battalions would not long survive thatfirst brutal baptism, but their spirit and fighting qualities have gone downinto history – these were, truly, the cream of Britain’s young men, and everysingle one of them was a volunteer.

townS and citieS inthe Great warthe Great war affected everyone. athome there were wounded soldiersin military hospitals, refugees fromBelgium and later on Germanprisoners of war. there were foodand fuel shortages and disruption toschooling. the role of womenchanged dramatically and theyundertook a variety of workundreamed of in peacetime.meanwhile, men serving in thearmed forces were scattered far andwide. in this new series, extractsfrom contemporary letters revealtheir heroism and give insights intowhat it was like under battleconditions.
