What Are Lifelong Learning Classes? You may be familiar with lifelong learning classes as non-credit or continuing education. These are classes you might take just for fun — because you’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument or you’d like to learn a new skill or hobby. Maybe you want to meet other people or get out of the house to try something new. Or maybe there’s a class that will help you grow professionally and advance your career.

Who Are Lifelong Learning Classes For? You. Yes, you! Lifelong learning classes are open to the public. We’ve had people as young as 13 to over 80 and of all skill levels take our classes.

Would our classes be great for someone you know? Classes and experiences make great gifts! We have gift certificates available that you can customize to match a class price. Call 865.539.7167 for more information.

When and Where Are Classes Held? Lifelong learning classes are typically scheduled in the evenings to fit your busy schedule. Some classes are just one day, while some are one or two nights a week for several weeks. While most classes are held on the Pellissippi State Community College Hardin Valley Campus, some are held at other locations. In the schedule, classes held at the Blount County and Strawberry Plains campuses or at an off campus location will be specified. See page 17 for more information about classes.

New Genealogy Research IIHave you hit a roadblock with tracing your ancestors? Work with the instructor and group to help fill in gaps in your ancestor profiles and family trees. Review and further explore some of the newer digitized records and how to get more out of the search sites like newspapers.com. Dive into discussions about local records and little-known resources. This advanced course is for students with an online verified family tree or who have previously taken the Genealogy Research: Finding Your Ancestors class or those with similar experience.

Instructor Laura Arnett Smith has been teaching students how to trace their ancestors, create a family tree, verify genealogical records and understand DNA testing for over 14 years. New Laurel, Ivy and Dog Hobble: The Plant Life of Southern Appalachia Join instructor Mark Davidson for the 15th class in the Our Appalachia series as we focus on regional plant life. The forests of this region are still a dominant feature of the southeastern landscape. Discuss pests like the balsam adelgid, the hemlock wooly adelgid, the chestnut blight and restoration. You will also learn about the glories of catawba rhododendron and flame azalea, and meet famed herbalist and naturalist Ila Hatter of Whittier, North Carolina.

Instructor Mark Davidson is a retired social studies and history teacher and golf coach who was inducted into the Blount County Educator Hall of Fame. Appalachian Dulcimer, Beginner If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to play the traditional Appalachian dulcimer, now is the time! Learn the basics of playing this beautiful instrument. Musicians of all ages are welcome; no musical experience is necessary. You will need to provide your own dulcimer. The class is designed for students who have completed the novice dulcimer class or are comfortable playing at the novice level with simple chorded melody tunes and all the major chord shapes. Theatre Stage Combat This course offers training in simulated violence for performance. Topics include unarmed techniques as well as one of the state weapon disciplines. The program allows for companies of all sizes to start an apprentice program for as little as one employee or over 100 with Pellissippi State as the apprentice sponsor.

In partnership with the Robert C. Byrd Institute for National Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Partnership and the US Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship, we offer templates of customized on-the-job training guidelines, related training instruction as well as administrative support for applications and record-keeping to meet employer needs. Registration Closing Dates: Registration typically closes two working days before the start of the class, unless noted in the coursedescription. Class space is limited and many popular classes fill before the closing date. Early registration will ensure enrollment.

Maximum & Minimum Enrollments: Some classes require minimum enrollments; courses may be canceled if enrollment is notmet. Students will receive a full refund for courses canceled due to low enrollment. Popular courses may fill before the closing date; students may register early with payment to hold a seat.

Fees: All enrollment fees must be paid before the beginning of class. The amount for each course is stated in the information regarding each offering. Course fees are subject to change without notice. State employee, senior citizen and disabled fee waiver policies do not apply to non-credit programs.

Books & Supplies: Most courses require instructional supplies; those materials are included in the course fee unless otherwise noted. Material fees payable to the instructor are noted; these fees typically cover costs instructors incur for course-specific supplies. Instructor material fees are due at the first class session.

Class Cancellation/Postponement: We reserve the right to cancel, postpone or combine classes and to substitute qualified instructors when necessary.

Holidays: Non-credit programs generally follow the College holiday schedule.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs): The CEU is a nationally recognized measure of education and training and is defined as 10 hours of participation in an organized continuing education adult or extension experience under reasonable sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction. For a transcript showing CEUs awarded to you for successfully completing CEU-eligible non-credit courses, contact Business and Community Services at 865.539.7167.

Certificates: Upon satisfactory completion of CEU classes, students may be awarded certificates in recognition of their

achievement. The cost of the initial certificate is included in the course fee. For duplicate certificates, a fee of $5 will be charged to cover administrative costs.

Refunds: A full refund will be given for classes canceled by the College. If you are unable to attend a course, please contact us by phone two days prior to the beginning of class, unless otherwise noted, to receive a refund. Refunds requested after this two-day closing window will undergo a review process.

Motorcycle Safety Refund Policy: Cancellations or rescheduling should be completed at least seven days prior to the start date of the enrolled class. Cancellations within the seven-day period will forfeit tuition, and reschedules will incur an additional charge. If the instructor feels a student is not progressing or is being dangerous to themself or others, the instructor may ask the student to leave at any time during the class. A student who does not complete the class satisfactorily should not expect a refund.

Parenting & Divorce Seminar Refund Policy: Notification of a desire to reschedule or cancel this course must be made at least one business day prior to the start date of each class. No shows must pay the full registration fee again to re-enroll in the class.
