OUR ENGINEERS HAVE DESIGNED A MACHINE – FASTER THAN A ROPE CRANE – MORE EFFICIENT THAN AN EXCAVATOR. THE PELIKAN FROM ARDELT: WITH THE BALANCERCOUNTERWEIGHT PRINCIPLE.

The Pelikan is a fully-hydraulic balancercrane, highly-regarded for its robustdesign. It is especially suitable for thefast handling of scrap and bulk goods inports and in the recycling industry.

Its luffing system consists of 4 ele-ments: main boom, front boom, tensionrod and movable counterweight.

The special features are: The mechani-cal coupling between the front arm andthe movable counterweight via the tensi-on rod minimises the moments acting onthe slewing ring and, additionally, theforces required for luffing. This results inreduced wear and reduced energy costs.A big advantage, especially comparedwith excavators. Compared with thefour-rope slewing crane for bulk materialhandling, the Pelikan makes advantageof its system: Its grab is mechanically

coupled directly to the front boom.Therefore the Pelikan can – apart fromlifting - also apply pressure of up to50% of its hoisting load on to the goodsbeing handled (bulk material densificati-on). This results in a far better filling ofthe grab and in a handling capacityincreased by up to 25%.

The ropeless Pelikan means also: Wearparts like wire ropes, rope sheaves ormechanical brakes (except for the railtravelling mechanism) do not exist.Therefore the Pelikan is a crane of lowmaintenance.

Another advantage: The Pelikan is extre-mely variable. Several kinds of load-car-rying equipment can be used, such as aload hook, several types of hydraulicgrabs, magnet beams, spreaders andvacuum lifting devices.

The change of position within a shortperiod of time either on crane rails, on acrawler travelling gear in rough terrain oron tyres can be selected.

The Pelikan is very reliable in operation,even under the most varied geographicaland meteorological conditions.

01 THE JIB SYSTEMThe hydraulic-driven jib system is typically for the Pelikan. With an optimi-sed hinge point between front boom andmain boom and with an extreme stabilityof the connection of main boom/ sup-porting frame achieved by additional stiffening. The Pelikan is available in five sizes,each with specific characteristics relatedto the lifting capacity: Pelikan 180 /Pelikan 280 / Pelikan 380 / Pelikan480 / Pelikan 580

03 THE CONTROL EQUIPMENTThe control equipment of the Pelikan isremarkable in various respects. For thecontrol of the Pelikan, we use in generala proportional valve control system.Joystick signals are transformed bymeans of digital amplifier cards and allowsensitive control, jerk-free and fast opera-tion of the crane. The use of bio-degra-dable oil is possible.

Other con-trol elements and factors also have a favoura-ble, i.e. minimising effect on the total energyconsumption: the patented movement of thecounterweight and the use of a load-sensingpump control.

06 THE OPERATOR’S CABINThe Pelikan fulfils all preconditions forachieving a high handling performance.This also includes an optimum workingenvironment for the operator. Thereforean ergonomic, air-conditioned cabin pro-viding best visibility to the working areais significant for the Pelikan.

07 THE PORTALSPelikan portals are precision work. Wemanufacture these to match exactly theprevailing on-site conditions. Alternativeversions are available with high or lowportals, either rail-mounted or travellingon bogies with rubber wheels or crawlerdrives. Stationary variants are also pro-duced with claws to provide bracingsupport or with permanent anchoring tothe ground.The optimum connection of the box-typegirder with the tower segment is alsotypical of the Pelikan. In this way, wehave created a portal design correctlysupporting the imposed loads and provi-ding a longer service life.

04 THE A-FRAME/SLEWING GEARThe Pelikan is equipped with twohydraulically driven slewing gears, whichgenerate high acceleration, but alsoassure an increased safety and reliabili-ty of the crane. Here are the technicaldetails: The slewing gear with an excen-ter at the output shaft enables an opti-mum adaptation of the backlash between the pinion and the slewingring. Thus the slewing ring and the toothing of the slewing gear drives canwork even more reliable.

The use of a high-volume slewing gear pump (180 ccm) combined withlarger slewing gear motors (80-180ccm) reduces the operating pressure in the system – and therefore increasesthe service life of the drive. And there is another, very special feature increa-sing the operating safety: Screw fittingswith cutting rings are now used onlyfor pipes up to 12 mm external diame-ter. In the case of larger nominal diameters, special couplings are used.These screw couplings offer maximumsafety in case of higher loads, such as pressure surges, vibrations, alterna-ting bending moments and temperaturevariations. All this means: Pelikan slewing gears work even longer now.

05 THE MACHINERY ROOMSThe Pelikan is equipped with noise-insulated machinery rooms and Dieselaggregates.

The Pelikan is used to best effect wherelarge quantities of bulk material andscrap metal have to be handled: in scrapyards, in steel mills, but also in othertypes of industrial applications and ports.
