2 A Word from Our Pastor

Dear FBC Pelham Family, In 2017 we adopted a new mission statement - “First Baptist Church Pelham is a Christ-centered faith family that ex-ists to make disciples for global impact by enjoying God through worship and prayer; by equipping disciples through teaching and serving; and by engaging the world through missions and evan-gelism.” This 40-word statement helps to give greater clarity and direction to our God-given mission for not only this past year but many years to come. In 2017 the LORD added 98 new members to this faith family! He sent 315 people on 10 short-term mission trips! In addition to our many familiar events and activities, we experienced new, successful ministries such as “August in the Annex” and The Harvest revival. In addition to all of that, the LORD brought the Fuller family to Pelham to help share life and faith with us by leading us in worship and creative ministries. We give God the glory for all of these blessings. Join me in thanking God for the following individuals He brought to this com-munity of faith over the last twelve months:

recent mission trip to Atlanta sorting the Christmas Boxes, so thank you. I know that 2018 will bring about some changes, but let me encourage you to continue giving your best for Christ our Lord. Our last luncheon was a great success with 96 excited folk attending. Thanks John for cooking for us last month. Our next Senior Adult Lun-cheon is on Tuesday, January 9th, at 11:00 A.M. in the An-

Dear Senior Adults, 2018 is just around the corner already, and I want to thank you for your faith-fulness to our Senior Minis-try this past year. I pray you have had a very Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your generos-ity for all you did for Barbara and me during the Christmas season. You will never know just how much you all mean to us. You are so cooperative on our day trips and on our

nex. It is a covered dish lunch, so bring your favorite dish and we will enjoy it together. We wish for you good health and happiness. Let me encourage you to keep on keep-ing on, and it has been our joy to work with you this past year. We don’t know what the future holds for us in 2018, but we know who holds the future, and He can be trusted. Thank you for your faith-fulness! May God Bless you richly! We love you dearly, Brother Paul and Barbara

Wow, how time has flown by. I can hardly believe that another year has gone by. 2017 was a great year in the Student Ministry. We saw so many new faces come through our door and many, many lives changed. It is exciting to see what God is up to in the lives of teenagers here at FBC Pelham. With winter here, it is getting colder outside, but Student Ministry doesn’t slow down just because it’s cold. Here’s what’s coming. Our Juniors and Seniors are going on a mission trip to Louisiana to help with both children’s ministry and student ministry evangelistic events. We will be gone January 12-15. I believe that mis-sions is one of the most important things for our teenagers to do, as it is a time where God can speak to and through them for his purpose and his Glory. Please pray for us as we go serve. DNOW this year is February 16-18, 2018. Using the theme of “One,” we will be talking about

One God, One Way to Heaven, One Body of Christ, and One Mis-sion. I know our students are going to be at this one. One cool thing that we do with this event is to allow all visitors to attend for FREE. We do this because I want to make sure that as many

people as possible hear this message and have the opportunity to accept Christ as their Lord and Sav-ior. Money doesn’t need to be the reason someone doesn’t hear about Christ. If you know a teenager who needs to be at this event, help us get them here. Matt Wright Student Pastor

Children’s Ministry

February 9-10Registration Packets are available now in the Children’s Gathering Area

The beginning of a new year signals us to put away the old and to renew ourselves to walk in the knowledge of the Lord.

The making of resolutions to be a better person reminds me of the following quote:

“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.”

Happy New Year!

Jobs Ministry After much prayer, we have decided to suspend the Jobs Ministry. The ministry has been in existence since 2009 and has served over 500 people. The unemployment rate in Shelby County and the entire state is very low and there is just not as much need for the type service we were providing. We thank you all for your prayers and support for the ministry over the years. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance in a job search, feel free to contact the church office. We are still available to help on an “as needed” basis.

Education Ministry We have a new Ministry Manual. If you have not received yours, please stop by one of the tables in the hall outside the Worship Center and pick up your copy. We ask that you limit it to one per family. Our next round of FOCUS classes begin on the 7th (Sunday) of January and the 10th (Wednesday). Don Dixon

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading is Underway! Games start back Saturday, January 6th and continue each Saturday through February 3rd. If you haven’t volunteered yet, we still have many open slots. We need concession workers, scorebook and clock operators, greeters, help with clean-up, and prayer partners. Contact Allison in the church offices if you are willing to volunteer. Upward Awards Night will be on Sunday, February 4th at 3:00 pm in the Auditorium. This is an event for the whole church, not just for Upward players and families. It is a

great opportunity for our First Baptist Family to make our Up-ward guests feel welcome. We will have games and door prizes, and you will get to see this year’s crop of Upward Basketball and Cheer-leading Stars. Wednesday Night Worship will resume Wednesday, Janu-ary 10th. This is a small group Bible Study for adults. We meet in the Library at 6:30 each week. We would love to have you join us. Interested in being a Greeter? We have needs for door greeters to welcome members and visitors, help distribute bulletins, and get information from visitors. If you are interested in this very

important ministry, I’d love to talk with you. Discovery Class! If you are new to FBCP and want to know more about who we are, I hope you will join us for the next Dis-covery class on Sunday, January 28th. It includes a free meal and information on our church and our ministries. This is a great class for those who have been visiting or who are already members. Pastor Daven does a great job commu-nicating who we are and who we want to be. If you want more info, email me at [email protected]. Deadline to sign up is Sunday, January 21st. Donnie Sisk

Cheergivers Ministry

It is hard to believe we are beginning year 2018. Our home bound and nursing home friends are also starting their year and need to know we love them still. They have been where we are — active in their church and their community. Now they are limited in what they can do outside their own home, or their own nursing home room. We never want them to think they

have been forgotten or that they mean less to us than they have in the past. If you would like to help us visit them, please contact me. We would love for you to join our Cheergivers team.

We only have one January birthday. It is: Mrs. Wilma Philen 1-23 160 Sterling Gate Drive Alabaster AL 35007-3907

Mrs. Philen is always diligent in caring for her homebound husband, so she is homebound, herself. Please take a moment to send her a birthday card.

I pray that your New Year will be full of blessings from our Lord. Jeanette Owens 664-9700 Home 296-1525 Cell

A Good Scripture for the New Year “Therefore… since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)
