Dear Pelham Families, At this point in the year, we often have opportunities to celebrate and honor the achievements of our students in specific programs or areas. Several of our students were recognized in the annual Latino Achievement Awards on Friday evening, at the Amherst Regional Middle School. At the elementary level, latino students are recognized in kindergarten and sixth grade if they meet criteria in specific areas. I am delighted to honor Xavier Matias in kindergarten for “Outstanding Effort”, and sixth grade students, Xavier Toledo and Patrick Matias, both recognized for “Outstanding Community Spirit.” The program was quite festive and included traditional songs and dances from Latino cultures and a special guest of honor included Latino Anaridis Rodriguez , anchorwoman from WWLP, who delivered a poignant and inspirational talk on her experience in coming to this country as a young girl and and her family’s efforts to achieve the American Dream. Pelham School has many talented artists as well! Many of our students in grades 4-6 submitted their art work for the Arbor Day poster contest sponsored by the Amherst Public Shade Tree Committee. The focus of the contest is to create a poster that demonstrates an appreciation of trees as one of our most valuable natural resources. Of the 94 entries received for the contest, six of our Pelham students’ posters were selected as winners in this contest. We celebrate the efforts and talents of the following students: Sophie Acker, Anna Maria Biagi, Kira Bixby, Leif Corp, Arden Lloyd, and Leah Wilson. 2014 year long calendars featuring the winners artwork will be printed. Hello from the speech and language teacher:

When I started my work as a ‘speech therapist’, most of what I did was work

with helping children to pronounce speech sounds the ‘correct’ way. Gradually, my

role expanded to helping students to use their language (vocabulary, grammar, speech

sounds and social scripts) for communicating. For most of the time I have worked

here, I have guided students to improve how they produce and perceive speech

sounds, words, sentences and longer material. Many of my students find it

challenging to process and recall what they hear, including directions and lessons. I

have also worked with children to develop their skills at expressing their ideas in verbal

and non-verbal modes. One of the best parts about my job here is that I get to

connect with students in both small groups in my room and larger groups in

classrooms.

Part of my work here involves cooperating with teachers and parents to gain an

understanding of their child’s learning style. Teachers take the opportunity to consult

with me about any student, who they have difficulty understanding or who has trouble

expressing ideas in speech or written form. I have the chance to see children from

their early days in kindergarten and to watch their development over their years here.

That is a wonderful privilege for me. Thank you.

Parents have a key part in the process of encouraging the growth of speech and

language skills. The coming summer is a great time to work on that. Read stories, tell

family tales, sing songs, play car games (I am thinking of an animal…), prompt your

little ones to follow directions, make a grocery list, take your older student to the

library and talk about your books and movies….

Welcome to Pelham Physical Education!

Hello All! I wanted to give everyone a brief update on PE at Pelham. This year is

coming to an end quickly but we have accomplished so much and will be closing the last few

weeks with some great events and activities.

In Grades K-3 we have successfully been working on a number of different skills

and units. We had an excellent time learning some group dances in our Dance Unit. From the

Hokey Pokey, the Cha Cha Slide, the Limbo, and the Cupid Shuffle, students spent time

exploring their dance moves. We also learned and practiced our overhand throw, how to

field ground/fly balls, and our batting in the Softball/ Wiffleball unit. Recently we have

been working on how to throw a Frisbee at a target, in our Frisbee Unit.

In Grades 4-6 we have been getting our hearts pumping and working on our cardio-

vascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance during our fitness warm

ups. We have also had the chance to get our bodies moving in our Dance Unit. Students did

exceptionally well in our group dances and learned the benefits dancing can provide for

your health. In our Softball/Wiffleball Unit we had the opportunity to learn some

important rules to the game while working on our softball skills, and have learned how to

play different wiffleball game variations. We have also started our Ultimate Frisbee Unit

by working on our backhand throw.

Upcoming Events:

Field Day 2013 is scheduled for May 31st. Sunscreen is recommended for field day with

the majority of activities being outside. No Bathing Suits. A change a clothes is

recommended but not required. Students do not need to bring water bottles. This year

students will be receiving a brand new water bottle for participating in field day. Forms

will be sent home for parent volunteer interest as well for those who would like to help

with field day.

Lastly, the winner of the Golden Sneaker Award will be announced very soon with only a

few weeks left of school. It should be an exciting finish!

Summer Reading Program Ideas

Are you always looking for FREE ways to keep your school aged children

occupied during the summer? Then check out this list of free summer

reading program ideas.

Scholastic’s Summer Challenge: Kids can keep track of their reading minutes

by logging in. In return, they can win digital prizes. Plus, they will be able to

enter a sweepstakes for gifts like Klutz books and other fun rewards. Mom

and Dad can also register in conjunction with their children to track

progress. This even starts on May 6th, but you can get registered right now.

Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading: This one requires kids to read eight

books and then make a short recommendation on each one. They can then

turn in their completed Summer Reading form at a store and choose a free

book from this list! This even starts May 21st and runs through September

3rd.

Pizza Hut’s Book-It Program: This program is offered to schools – including

home schooling parents. Starting on Wednesday, March 1st, homeschoolers

can sign up to get in on the program. You can watch their Facebook page for

more details.

Local Libraries: Be sure to check with your local library to see what sort of

summer reading program is offered. A quick search on your local library’s

website will help you find out what programs they offer.

Showcase Cinemas Bookworm Wednesdays (select locations): Each

Wednesday from July 10 – August 7, kids can bring in a book report (unless

you are six and under and then admission will be free) – which will be cost

of admission! The films in include:

July 10th – Yogi Bear

July 17th – Ice Age: Continental Drift

July 24th – Madagascar 3

July 31st – The Lorax

August 7th – Hotel Transylvania

The Pelham Town Meeting met on Saturday, May 4th

and approved a

number of articles to support the Pelham School. The school budget

passed, and the town also voted to support the purchase of curriculum

materials as well as funds to complete necessary security

improvements at the school. The much needed chimney extension has

now been completed and the Pelham School students and staff will

have much cleaner and safer air quality during the winter heating

months. The Pelham School is very appreciative for the support it

receives from the community!!

Do you need summer care? I will be having 2 weeks of all-day

care this summer. Familiar faces staff this popular camp-like

session, scheduled for June 24 – June 28 and August 19-23.

The cost is $200 for each week with a sibling discount. State

vouchers are accepted and scholarships are available for

eligible families. This fun program, held at the Pelham School,

will run from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. (with early and late care

negotiable). Space is limited, so see Lennie Ware to sign up or

for more information.

school families. Children must be at least 5 years old by the

session date.)

PELHAM AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Pelham After School Program is a state licensed, non-

profit organization housed at the Pelham Elementary School. It

provides a safe and fun environment for children from kindergarten

to sixth grade that promotes their emotional, social, intellectual and

physical growth. The program follows the school calendar

and runs from school dismissal until 5:30 daily. A number of skilled

and well-trained staff assist the director, Lennie Ware.

The full time cost of the program is $200 monthly, with a 10%

sibling discount for siblings. Students may attend as little as one day

per week for $40 per month. A refundable, one time deposit of $50

per child is required. Daily snacks are included in the cost.

Financial aid, in the form of discounted tuition, is available for

qualified families. Please request a scholarship application. We are

also currently recognized by the state childcare voucher system.
