Guess what I am?

BY KYLE KNOWLES

Politicians have waded in to try and save the Roy Stokes Hall.

City councillor Glenn Living-stone said he has had informal conversations with Christchurch East MP Poto Williams and Burwood-Pegasus Community Board members who are all behind the idea of keeping the hall.

The hall, sited at Central New Brighton School, could be sold or demolished at the end of 2015 when the school closes.

Cr Livingstone said he has had the same discussions with the

Ministry of Education and has had a positive response from them. He said they are keeping all options on the table and are willing to work with the community to achieve a positive outcome.

“The main message is that all of the local elected members want it retained”.

If nothing happened with the hall it could potentially be demol-ished but Cr Livingstone said there would be an enormous push-back by the community if that was to happen.

“The hall was critical at the time of the earthquakes for people want-

ing information and resources,” Cr Livingstone said.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board chairwoman Andrea Cummings said there was good

political backing in the east for the retention of the hall, including from the community board and Ms Williams.

She said: “It’s an awesome asset to New Brighton and it would be a shame to lose it. It would be really great to retain it and the Ministry of Education is open to that. The school just have to go through the process and well back them”.

Ms Cummings said there was a lot of passion in New Brighton at the moment and if they tried to bulldoze it there would be a big response.

BIG PRODUCTION: Queenspark School’s senior syndicate all in their costumes from their last performance. The senior syndicate recently performed a musical called The Junkyard Ban for parents and the community. The whole syndicate was involved, and worked on the production throughout term 3.

A performance for parents

• From page 1“There is no other venue around of

its size and there is nothing particularly wrong with it. It could service the community for a long time yet”.

The hall is located on Central New Brighton School land and board of trustees chairwoman Liarne Tamaiparea said this was a positive.

“That’s great that we’ve got that support. I think we do need to all be on the same page but basically not much is going to

happen until next year”.Central New Brighton School will merge

with North New Brighton and Freeville Schools at the end of this year but the new Rawhiti School will still use the Central New Brighton site until the end of next year.

The Ministry of Education’s head of education infrastructure service, Kim Shannon, said no decision will be made until the school closes and the site stops being used at the end of 2015.

The IMPORTANCE of a HEALTHY MOUTH

&McMASTER HEAPVETERINARY PRACTICE

Dentistry on cats and dogs would be one of the most common daily surgeries carried out by the vets at McMaster & Heap Vet practice. Most days we perform between 4-6 dental surgeries. Most pets, unless very young, have diseased, unhealthy mouths that require attention. It is not common practice for owners to inspect their pets mouth let alone brush their dogs teeth but regularly doing this could significantly improve your pets mouth and overall health. Our pets are born with perfect teeth but will not stay this way without proactive measures by us.

A healthy mouth is so important for your special pets overall health. 80% of plaque is comprised of nasty bacteria that can progress to hepatitis, pyelonephritis ( infection in the kidneys), bladder infections, joint infections and even endocarditis ( infection around the heart valves). Prevention of these diseases isn’t difficult – it just requires education on our part and time and commitment on yours. Dental hygiene for us is an unconscious daily ritual that our parents started for us – why shouldn’t our pets deserve the same treatment.

Your pets mouth will be checked regularly by the vets and nurses at McMaster and Heap Vets at routine visits. The obvious signs of advanced dental disease are terrible breath, difficulty/slowness eating dry food, salivating, weight loss, swelling around the jaw, lethargy, face rubbing and cats reduce their grooming and dogs stop playing with toys. Usually when we observe these clinical signs, there is periodontitis with diseased roots and the teeth are past saving and need to be extracted. We want to notice early stages of dental disease so teeth can ultimately be saved. Every animal is at risk of developing diseased mouths.

During an examination, the gums and teeth will be inspected carefully. We check for oral ulcers, red infected gums, fractured teeth, rotton and loose teeth and we inspect the mouth carefully for cancers, enlarged tonsils and abscesses. We assess the lymph nodes and check the skin and coat around the mouth. We will advise the best treatment plan for our patient which may include dentistry under a general anaesthetic. Other treatments we recommend include feeding dental diets, tooth brushing regularly, mouth washes, knawing at large raw bones that can’t be chewed up and some toys are great for keeping teeth and gums healthy. Don’t worry, we won’t ask you to brush your cats teeth. We would have no show of pinning down Spartacus our very ADHD Abbysinnian!!

We are now able to make accurate decisions on whether a tooth needs to be extracted or not but performing dental radiography. A perfect image is projected via digital radiography onto a computer within seconds and we are clearly able to assess the tooth roots, the surrounding bone and soft tissues. This image gives us the necessary information to decide if we can save or need to remove a tooth in question. An excellent piece of technology which will allow us to practice state of the art dentistry and hopefully your pets will have their full set of teeth for longer!

As you can see from the photos, Tara, an 8 year old Papillon, presented to Steve with a bad breath only. She was eating great, playing and exercising normally and gave no indications of a painful mouth. She ended up having 10 teeth removed – most of her premolars, molars, carnassials and canines. She recovered excellently and will continue to do well with her gummy mouth. She will have no pain nor infection now.

McMaster & Heap Vet Practice are offering FREE DENTAL CHECKS with a qualified nurse until mid December. Ring for an appointment.

The Cricket World Cup trophy is coming to Burwood Park on Saturday (Nov 22) with New Zealand legends Sir Richard Hadlee and Mark Greatbatch attending.

East Christchurch-Shirley Cricket Club, which uses Bur-wood Park, and event organisers are expecting between 1000 and 2000 people to come on the day which include a big number of junior cricket teams.

Club president Howard Morel said around a dozen extra children’s games have been scheduled to be played across Burwood Park including the south side of the park opposite the clubrooms.

This is to get as many people playing cricket at the ground so they have a chance to have a look at the World Cup trophy.

Mr Morel said the club will sell some food and drink for a bit of fundraising and hopefully by providing the ground for the day it will help raise the profile of the club too.

“It’s all profile, I imagine there will be some TV cameras there to have a look at it and it will be good for us to be doing our part to promote the World Cup”.

The nationwide trophy tour started almost two weeks ago in Auckland and has been making its way down the country.

The trophy will be on show from 10am-2pm with a number of other activities happening on the day.

An interactive exhibition on the history of the World Cup will be at the park as well as a

cricket zone to test your skills and prizes will be up for grabs.

Everyone is welcome to head along to the event even if they are not a cricketer.

The Cricket World Cup will be hosted by New Zealand and

Australia in February and March with the final taking place in Melbourne on March 29.

Christchurch is hosting the opening game on February 14 to be played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval.

Cup comes to Burwood ▌▌ IN BRIEFFire in forestA fire broke out in Bottle Lake Forest last Wednesday with a lightning strike being the probable cause. A member of the public raised the alarm with park rangers and two fire engines and a tanker attended the fire. Bottle Lake Forest deputy principal fire officer War-ren Hunt said the conditions were in their favour with rain around and high humidity. He said if this happened in a nor-west wind it could have been very serious.

New bus stopsThe Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board will discuss and decide on whether to approve nine new bus stop locations on five streets. Five of which will be permanent. The other four will be temporary while more consultation is carried out to determine the best places for more new bus stops to be placed. As a result of Environment Canterbury’s review of the bus network new bus stops are needed to cater for new bus routes. The permanent stops will be on Aston Drive, Inwoods Rd between Mairehau Rd and Queenspark Drive, and another on Queenspark Drive to be relocated. The proposed temporary stops are on Bower Ave and Lower Styx Rd.

Flooding consultationThe city council is asking residents for their preferred option to reduce flood-ing in the Flockton Basin area. Consul-tation opened last week and will close on November 26. The preferred option is expected to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in the area and ben-efit at least 585 properties. After con-sidering residents’ feedback, alongside technical advice, the city council expects to make a final decision on December 11.

LEGENDS: Mark Greatbatch and Sir Richard Hadlee.

SPARKLING: The Cricket World Cup trophy that will be on display at Burwood Park.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

A new playground may be built in South New Brighton Park by the middle of next year.

A consultation period first has to take place before the playground is built and that is due to be in December.

The consultation will cover around 400 households in the area. South New Brighton School and the South Brighton Residents Association will also be part of discussions.

A final report is scheduled to be presented to the Burwood- Pegasus Community Board in February or March with construction due to begin in May and finished in July.

South Brighton Residents Association co-chairwoman Jane Harrison said she did not even know about the proposal but said it would be a major boost for the area and the park.

“That is really exciting because there has been a lack of facilities for young ones in the area in recent years”.

She said at the association’s last meeting the topic of getting something new put into the park came up and they would be “thrilled” for a playground to go in there.

Mrs Harrison said they would be really positive in the consultation period and was looking forward to getting started.

City councillor Glenn Livingstone said if no issues arise from the consultation period it should be built by July next year and the playground will take on a nautical theme.

He said this was happening quite quick and some of the playground equipment would be the first of its kind in New Zealand.

The fort at the current playground was burnt out after the 2011 earthquake and some of the other playground equipment was installed the 1980s and 90s.

New slides, a flying fox, a 3.8m high pirate tower and a first for New Zealand 6.85m high bird’s nest tower are all proposed to be built at the park.

Big names for Lyttelton eventChristchurch mountain bikers James Minty and Nick Jordan will be lining up again in the Lyttelton Urban Downhill on November 22-23 after a long wait.

Minty won the junior section last year and the overall winner from last year, Cam Cole, who is also from Christchurch, is yet to be confirmed for the event.

The mountain biking event was postponed in March due to rain and a landslide that caused a gas spill at the port.

Other professional riders from the rest of the country and Austra-lia will also line up.

Queenstown legend of dirt and slope style Kelly McGarry will be riding and course designing for the King of Dirt event.

McGarry is famous for his double back flip across the can-yons of Utah, placing him second in the 2013 Red Bull Rampage. He was also an invited rider to Vienna Air King in 2010.

Event organiser Andrea Murray said they were still waiting for a few more pro riders yet to con-firm.

“We understand riders are in their off-season, needing a break, but just in case they want to come and ride we have numbers put aside for them. This event has a definite feel-good factor for every-one in the New Zealand mountain bike community,” she said.

November was agreed on to accommodate the New Zealand pro riders who will have only just arrived back from the gruelling

Northern Hemisphere season.Course designer Nick Sutcliffe

has a few surprises for the 1.2km long downhill course on Sunday, as well as the addition of an Urban King of Dirt event on Saturday evening.

Ms Murray said this event is unique in that it is grassroots driven.

“When we began in March 2012 we were aiming to provide a fun course for gravity riders who had been without any tracks on the Port Hills, since February 2011.

“Now the event has a large following. It is very visual and media driven, with a live stream for both events. We have been determined to keep this a free day out for the 4000 expected spectators.

“Finding funding has its challenges, and we continue to

look for a naming sponsor, which will move the event forward into 2015 when we negotiate the joining up with the City Down Hill World Tour,” Ms Murray said.

This year, the Huxster Mountain Bike Trust and event organis-ers thought it better for Lyttelton businesses if they bring spectators through the tunnel for more than one day.

To get to Lyttelton this year, organisers have asked that you consider leaving your car in Heathcote and taking a free shuttle provided by the event organisers or even better, catching the regular service of the 28 or 535 buses from Northlands or Eastgate.

Parking will be available at the Naval Point Yacht Club for a gold coin with the free shuttle to bring you to Lyttelton, where parking will be very limited.

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

The week after Guy Fawkes has now passed and the bangs and crashes audible each night are starting to lessen.

While the Fire Service got away with a relatively quiet time, we did attend 18 incidents that were directly attributable to fireworks and a few that we can’t be certain about.

In the latter category were two instances of dogs trapped in fences, one at about 9.30pm and the other at 2.45 in the morning.

I say these may have been fire-work related because these types of animal rescue are few and far between and normally during the day.

If they were the result of fire-work use or misuse then that alone would be reason enough in my mind to end sales to the public.

Mind you, the effect of fireworks going off in a car in Halswell in the early hours of last Sunday morn-ing meant the complete loss of the vehicle to fire.

That would surely have ruined someone’s night.

We now move further towards summer with some hot, dry nor’westers sure to feature.

The habit of lighting fires that Guy Fawkes encourages has

already seen an increase of such events in grass, skips and bins.

Combined with warmer weather and wind, that could spell trouble.

So, once again, we ask for early reporting and keen eyes giving descriptions, or better still, names, of those who think lighting fires is clever, exciting or an opportunity to give the finger to the rest of us.

Sigh of relief at end of fireworks

LESS BANG: Thankfully, the fire-works season is waning for another year.

What’syour normal?

Have you ever stopped to think, is your normal actually normal? Are you serious about your sport and training, looking to improve

your performance but keep getting injured? Are you living with stiffness and pain in your body that you’ve never got around to doing anything about?

From the athlete, the regular runner to the regular gardener, physiotherapists are trained to assess if your normal, is in fact, normal.

In recent years, the role of the

physiotherapist has developed from first point of call when you’re injured, to a consultant to seek advice from. Muscle People physiotherapists can help you improve your performance, or reduce your muscle stiffness through their Movement and Posture Assessment, as well as a two-stage Dynamic Spines class and their brand-new Oov Core strength class.

Movement and Posture Assessments are designed to identify and remove inefficient movement patterns, allowing you to generate the speed, power and

agility you want. Previously the domain of professional athletes, this is now available to anyone. The assessment utilises the dynamic Functional Movement Screen (FMS), a ranking and grading system of seven key movement patterns that are critical to normal function. By screening these patterns, the FMS readily identifies functional limitations, asymmetries and faulty movement patterns leading to various compensations, sub-optimal movement patterns, poor biomechanics and possibly contributing to future injury, as well as increased microtrauma to your joints. Once your Movement and Posture Assessment has been analysed, your physiotherapist will specifically prescribe an individualised corrective programme that will eliminate your inefficiencies and maximise your performance.

One of Muscle People’s popular programmes is their Dynamic Spines two-stage class which is designed for anyone with back or neck pain, or with core and postural

weakness. The programme involves a one hour a week class over an eight-week period with a home exercise programme.

The Oov is the latest training invention to hit the health and fitness industry and Muscle People are offering Oov Core classes focusing on core strength.

Movement and Posture Assessments are designed to identify and remove inefficient movement patterns, allowing

you to generate the speed, power and agility you want.

If you’re not happy with your normal, then give the team at Muscle People Physiotherapy a call at City Clinic 961 0236 or Bishopdale Clinic 360 3606.

The Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup took place at Addington Raceway on November 11. The vivacious atmosphere drew trotting fans as

well as fashion followers who indulged in the day of fun and glamour. Under the blazing sun, elegant ladies and stylish gents vied in the best dressed

contest, while on track muscular horses whipped the ground to clouds of dust and the excitement grew to fever pitch, driving frenzied punters to leap and shout as the winners crossed the post. Some tote tickets were cashed in, and others torn up to blow away on the breeze, accompanied by the sounds of celebration or disappointment.

Flooding consultationThe city council is asking residents about

their preferred option to reduce flooding in the Flockton Basin area. Consultation opened last Monday and will close on November 26. The preferred option is expected to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in the area and benefit at least 585 properties. After considering residents’ feedback, alongside technical advice, the city council expects to make a final decision on December 11.Cyclist hit

A cyclist was thrown from his bicycle after being hit by a car last Tuesday. A St John spokesman said the 30-year-old man sustained injuries to his hand and arm in the collision on Farrington Ave, outside Bishopdale Mall. The hit came after a crash on the same day on Halswell Rd when a car rolled into a ditch.Fitness trail park

The city council has proposed a $69,000 fitness park trail at Burnside Park. The trail would include four separate stations situated around the edges of the park. Community funding would be sort for three out of the four stations. The Commodore Hotel had already provided $10,000 worth of funding, which would be used for station one. The city council has asked for public consultation on the project, which opened on November 7 and would end November 21.School fairSt Albans School is hosting a Monster Fair on Saturday (November 22) from 4-7pm. Funds will go towards the redevelopment of the school’s library and community hub. The school is looking for donations of toys, puzzles and games. Donations can be left at the school office.

Belly fat - a serious health concern

World COPD Day

- Can Breathe

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is when the breathing passages (airways) in your

lungs are obstructed and your lung tissue is damaged. This causes difficulty in breathing. The early stages of COPD are often unrecognised, but it is very easy to determine whether a person is at risk. If you answer yes to three or more of the following questions, you could have COPD.

• Areyouacurrentorex-smoker?• Do you cough several times

mostdays?• Doyoubringupphlegmormucus

mostdays?• Do you get out of breath more

easilythanothersyourage?• Areyouover40yearsold?

If COPD is detected early, there are options and treatments available to help improve quality of life and prevent further deterioration of lung function. Talk to your doctor if you think you are at risk or to find out more about COPD. Join us at The Canterbury Horticultural Hall, Riccarton Avenue, on November 19 from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Free entry - all are welcome.Free information and advice, health professionals are available to answer your questions.

An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called garcinia cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight

management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr Oz Show on television has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.

The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase

Miracle weight loss fruitserotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep, improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate to help improve the results.

Excessive fat accumulation around the belly not only affects the way you look but increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood

pressure, cancer and stroke. The good news is belly fat can be reduced, and this may reduce the chance of serious disease.

Exercising regularly, drinking plenty of pure water, increasing fibre intake, reducing or eliminating sugar, reducing carbohydrate intake, having smaller meals regularly and having more protein with each meal can make a difference. The right supplements may also improve results considerably for many people.

Garcinia cambogia (Super CitriMax) provides Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) that researchers have found to help stop fat

being made and stored in the body. It is also effective at suppressing the appetite, reducing cravings and keeping you feeling fuller for longer. For effective results, it should be taken 45 to 60 minutes before each meal.

SafSlim is a product that has been shown in one study to reduce belly fat up to six times faster over a 16-week period while at the same time increasing lean muscle. One tablespoon of the great tasting syrup should be taken twice a day before meals.

A daily fibre drink and a lower bowel tonic can help improve weight loss. A cider vinegar drink can improve digestion, overall health and the metabolic rate, and has been found also to be very beneficially for weight loss.

Papanui High SchoolEvolocity: The evolution of an electric

vehicle, designed and built by teenagers

This project started earlier in the year with an invitation to take the challenge to be one of the first schools to design and build

a vehicle capable of transporting a student, with payload, powered by a small electric motor. A group of interested year 10 and 11 students attended a ‘brainstorming’ meeting where participants were encouraged to think ‘outside the square’. Our designs were based around bicycle parts. We were able to course these from the EcoShop, who kindly donated enough parts to start the project.

For our first design, we settled on the driver sitting in the sidecar. For manoeuvrability, we were fixed on steering both ends of the bike. Early tests resulted in a catastrophic collapse of the wheel. We initially powered the sidecar wheel with the motor supplied in the kit, donated by ‘Orion Energy’, but found we could turn right with ease, but couldn’t turn left at all.

We also had a team working on a ‘purpose designed and built’ speed controller, to provide gentle and controlled acceleration and would enable the team to monitor key performance indicators. Success on this front meant that we had a working speed controller. This enabled Papanui to place an entry in the ‘speed controller’ challenge.

Our second design was based on a trike with dual steering wheels at the front, with the drive wheel at the back. The driver of this vehicle sits below the axels in a ‘recumbent’ repose. The payload and batteries were to be carried under the floor plate in order to maintain a very low centre of gravity and for an aerodynamic feel. The challenge here revolved around the structural rigidity of the frame which added extra weight everytime another piece of steel was added.

Mastering appropriate steering geometry

was a problem, but some trial and error testing resulted in an acceptable solution.

With the addition of roll bars, brakes and other safety features, we now had two functioning vehicles, ready for the final challenge: a series of challenges to be held at Ruapuna Raceway at the end of November and sponsored by Orion Energy and APEV.

The learning and ‘ownership’ of the vehicles has been amazing with a huge variety of skills being developed. These included the advantages of planning before building, working with metal and wood, the engineering challenges of strength, suitability of materials for a given purpose and numerous electronic challenges.

We have been very lucky to have had the support the following sponsors: CPIT for their huge expertise in small vehicle design and electronics, Orion Energy for the donation of the power kit, ElectroFlash for electronics support, EcoShop for multiple bike parts, the Youth Development Trust for their kind donation and ‘More Mobility’ for their parts to help us with next year’s project.

Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discover

A small team of enthusiastic students from Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery is proud to be representatives of their school

for the EVolocity High School Competition coming up on November 30, where these young people will showcase an electric vehicle that they have designed and built from the ground up.

The project, which they have been working on since early in the year, has not been without its challenges. They have had to learn design and engineering processes, construct the vehicle, test it and refine it. In the spirit of the competition, this project has seen the students recycle old bicycles and incorporate them with some custom-designed features. During the project’s development students have worked largely independently, but have also connected with a range of key mentors to help guide the project as they went.

A particularly proud moment for the team was the development of the steering system. A multitude of factors had to be taken into account, including a slight slant to the vehicle that was included for stability control. Eventually the group settled on a rope and cog system that has been working well and is nice to drive.

An added complication for this group is the transient nature of the school in post-earthquake Christchurch. Formerly two central city schools, Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti and Discovery 1 have merged into a new school in 2014 and are operating out of two campuses in temporary buildings. Designing and building an electric vehicle with limited space and resources have forced this group to find creative solutions

to a number of issues. Team leader Toby Spanton reflected that having 10 people in a small workspace made clear communication and processes an essential requirement for success. With great teamwork, they were able to overcome all obstacles and deliver a final product that they are all proud of.

As an Enviroschool, the team has received generous support from Enviroschools who have provided some funding and mentoring to enable their project to get off the ground, which the team are extremely grateful for. The team would also like to acknowledge the supportive efforts of Jared, Bry and Edward in helping make this project a reality.

BMW expands SUV conceptWhen BMW launched its sport activity coupe, the X6, I wasn’t convinced its shape would catch on.

Well BMW has proved me wrong and, what’s more, the com-pany has launched a smaller car with a similar shape – the X4.

Both sit in an almost standalone category. They aren’t your normal SUV fare given their coupe-like look, however, they are both four-wheel-drive and function as an SUV should.

Which is why BMW describes the car as a sport activity model, it isn’t a true cross-country charger but it is a capable machine if you want to access the ski-field or take the family into the high-country lake for a camping holiday.

Like all BMW models, the X4 is loaded with kit for safety, and comfort and convenience. If you want extras there’s a lot of specifi-cation which can be ordered into the car.

The test car was well equipped with features such as satellite navi-gation, head-up display and heat-ed seats up front. One item I par-ticularly like is the album cover which screens on the central dis-play when a CD is playing. Other more important features include idle stop-start, EfficientDynamics regeneration system and dynamic driving modes.

Just because the X4 is smaller in stature than the X6 it doesn’t mean comfort has been compro-

mised, it is a mid-size car which makes good use of its proportions, rear seat occupants have ample leg and head room, and for three across the back it isn’t too much of squeeze widthwise. The test car was leather trimmed and seat comfort is high, especially up front.

Interestingly, the X4 gets some of the same running gear as the X6, in the test car’s case it was fit-ted with the venerable straight-six, 3-litre turbocharged diesel engine along with a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission.

I’ve experienced that engine combination in several BMWs and would rate it as my favourite.

BMW claims power outputs of 230kW and 630Nm, these are both high; consequently, the X4 feels strong, there’s always a feel-ing of willingness through the accelerator. If you look at the acceleration figures – 5.2sec to make 100km/h from a standstill, 4sec to reach 120km/h from 80km/h and a 247km/h top speed – the X4 is no slouch.

Not only is it quick but it is also docile for the majority of our driv-ing. At city speeds it works over

lazily ready to unleash if required. The big six is also a thrifty unit, and that is something that BMW as an engine manufacturer can take a lot of credit for.

It rates the double-camshaft unit with a six-litre per 100km/h (47mpg) combined cycle average, during my testing time the fuel usage readout was listing around 8l/100km (35mpg) average along with a 6.6l/100km (43mpg) figure cruising the highway at 100km/h (engine speed just 1450rpm).

These are amazing figures given the X4’s performance potential while journeys of considerable distance can be made between fill-ups.

I enjoyed the X4’s cruising abil-

ity on the fabulous high country roads. It is a quiet traveller which eases through the air with barely a sound.

When it comes time to tackle the quick corners the X4 feels firmly planted. A lot of that has to do with the calibre of the sport-specification Pirelli PZero tyres; like many BMWs today, the rear wheels are quite a bit bigger than the front.

The rears have 275/40 x 20in tyres, the fronts 245/40. Grip is superb and the feel of what the tyres are doing is directly trans-mitted to the steering wheel, there is definite loading and a firm feel translates to confidence within the driver.

Even though I rate highly BMW’s xDrive four-wheel-drive mechanism I only used it to estab-lish feel on loose surface roads, I didn’t tackle anything off-road. The weather was at its worst on testing day and I didn’t want to venture off-road for fear of a lengthy clean-up.

However, I can report that the same drive system in the X5 has provided me with enough information to safely say that it would be capable off-road bearing in mind that at 203mm ground clearance is just average.

The X4 lands here in just two models, there’s a 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel as well. The test car was the range-topper at $129,900, while this represents a sizeable outlay, if you take into account its style, presence and level of specifi-cation, it is a desirable car.

And it would certainly appear that its design shape is tempt-ing buyers. I’ve seen a lot of X6s recently, I’m sure the X4 will be just as popular.

BMW X4: An SUV perfect for the high-country camping holiday.
