Fundamentals of surveying:

• Angular measurement – vertical (“z”)

θ

Distance

Vertical displacement (“z”)

Vertical displacement (“z”) = Distance x Tan θ

Page 7: PEER EGERTON LIMITED TWO-WEEK STRUCTURED WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME 2008/9 By Dr Peter Cave

Fundamentals of surveying:

• Angular measurement – horizontal (“x” and “y”)

Angle β

Distance (d)

y = d.sinβx = d.cosβ

Page 8: PEER EGERTON LIMITED TWO-WEEK STRUCTURED WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME 2008/9 By Dr Peter Cave

Simple geodesy:

• World standard

• What do surveyors measure?

• Relationship of the Geoid to the Elipsoid

• Why is this important?

• Transformations

Page 9: PEER EGERTON LIMITED TWO-WEEK STRUCTURED WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME 2008/9 By Dr Peter Cave

Understanding errors:

• 360º in a circle – 60 minutes in one degree

• Distance = radius of earth, one minute error to 1 mile

• Distance = 100 metres, one minute error to 29.1mm

• Distance = 5 metres, one minute error to 1.4mm

Page 10: PEER EGERTON LIMITED TWO-WEEK STRUCTURED WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME 2008/9 By Dr Peter Cave

Students will be shown how to establish a traverse…

Page 11: PEER EGERTON LIMITED TWO-WEEK STRUCTURED WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME 2008/9 By Dr Peter Cave

And how the observations then translate into a drawing.

Geographers, Surveyors and Timelords:

Isaac Newton (25th December 1642 Julian – 31st March 1727) was a mathematician and physicist who first postulated that the earth is an ellipsoid rather than spherical (think gravity and apples!).

Galileo Galilee (15th February 1564 - 8th January 1642) was an Italian astronomer imprisoned for supporting the heliocentric theory (the earth orbits the sun) of Copernicus.

Captain James Cook (27th October 1728 – 14th February 1779) was an explorer, navigator, and map-maker who charted the main shorelines of the Pacific Ocean, including New Zealand.

Colonel Sir George Everest (4th July 1790 – 1st December 1866) was a geographer and surveyor, and mainly responsible for completion of the Great Trigonometric Survey of India.
