#he Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a boo" about ideas, and the ideas
presented are those of the author, Paulo Freire. Freire is an educator and areolutionary. -lthough Freire states in the preface that he has neer been inoled
in a reolution, he loo"s upon his role in education as reolutionary and he beliees
in the ideal of a reolution of the common people. +e is interested in the problem of
impoerished, oppressed people, and he beliees that the problem is systemic,
rooted in the struggle bet!een an oppressie upper class bent on maintaining
po!er and an oppressed lo!er class rendered impotent by oppression.
Freire's ideas are essentially arist, but they are also humanist and een

For Freire, the term contradiction means a situation that is counter to the natural
human condition and the human drie to ful*ll itself. - contradiction is a situation
that negates humani$ation. #he situation of oppression is a contradiction, and so is
the traditional teacher(student relationship.

Freire uses the term prais to mean the combination of free thought and action.
Prais is a process, !hich is the interaction of clear, "no!ledgeable re1ection and
the action upon the !orld that is implicit in cogent human thought.
