The Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC) was adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council in May 1997. The Directive concerns manufacturers of items such as vessels pressurized storage containers, heat exchangers, steam generators, boilers, indu-strial piping, safety devices and pressure accessories.

Such pressure equipment is widely used in the process industries (oil & gas, chemical, phar-maceutical, plastics and rubber and the food and beverage industry), high temperature pro-cess industry (glass, paper and board), energy production and in the supply of utilities, hea-ting, air conditioning and gas storage and transportation.

TÜV SÜD Czech is a Notifi ed Body as defi ned in the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) accredited for full scope of pressure equipment, vessels and assemblies and recognized by the European Commission (NB 1017). TÜV SÜD Czech is authorized to carry out type exami-nations.

The area of pressure products is one of the traditional services provided by TÜV SÜD Czech from the beginning of its operations. It is also one of the basic reasons of the formation of the “technical supervision association” of TÜV SÜD on the German market. Today we provide services based on harmonized regulations of the European Union, we are able to meet requi-rements of a number of national regulations not only from Europe but from overseas as well.

The PED affects most equipment that will be placed on the market in the European Economic Area (EEA) designed for pressures above 0.5 bar g (7.25 psi g).

ESR (Essential Safety Requirements)

Annex I of the PED defi nes specifi c requirements that must be satisfi ed relating to hazard analysis, design, welding approval, material approval, manufacturing, inspection, testing, product marking, operating instructions and more. This approach means that any suitable design code can be used, e.g. ASME VIII for pressure vessels, provided that justifi cation can be made against all applicable ESRs.

Classifi cation of Pressure Accessories

The pressure accessories are classifi ed on the basis of:

• their maximum allowable pressure PS, and• their volume V or their nominal size DN, as appropriate, and• the group of fl uids for which they are intended,and the appropriate table for vessels or piping is to be used to determine the conformity assessment category. The demarcation lines in the following conformity assessment tables indicate the upper limit for each category:

Conformity assessment

Before placing pressure equipment on the market, the manufacturer shall subject each item of equipment to one of the conformity assessment procedures. The conformity assessment procedures to be applied to an item of pressure equipment with a view to affi xing the CE mar-king shall be determined by the category.

The conformity assessment procedures to be applied for the various categories are as fol-lows:

• category I (Module A)• category II (Module A1, Module D1 and Module E1)• category III (Module B1 + D, Module B1 + F, Module B + E, Module B + C1 and Module H)• category IV (Module B + D, Module B + F, Module G and Module H1)
