Meeting the electric needs of Philadelphia with new, rebuilt and larger electric substations

$160 million in the city’s electric infrastructure to ensure reliability for current and future energy demandTuna Substation in Northern Liberties (2005)Waverly substation in Center City (2007)Southwark substation in South Philadelphia/Navy Yard (2008)Tunnel substation in University City (Spring 2009)Schuylkill & Grays Ferry tr substations in South Philadelphia (Summer/Fall 2009)These are part of a network of 20 electric substations that make up the Center City transmission systemNear future: Penrose (2011) and Peltz (2013) substations planned in near future

Tunnel Substation$25 million capital investmentNew 220/13kV - 62MVA substationLocated along Schuylkill River on University of Pennsylvania campus• Meet substantial new electric demand in University City• Two (2) 62MVA 220/13kV transformers• Eight (8) 13kV distribution circuits

Ultimate capacity of 12 circuits• Nine (9) MVAR capacitor bank• Taps the 220-27 line between Parrish & Grays Ferry• Benefits

Relieves 40MVA load on facilities east of Schuylkill River−

Improved reliability in West Philadelphia−

Provides additional capacity to University City area−

Begins the retirement of Schuylkill 13kV substation

Schuylkill & Grays Ferry Transmission substations

$18 million upgrades to Schuylkill substation• Major transmission supply for Center City• Modernizes existing facilities• Rebuilding electrical facilities on same site as existing sub• Replace 12 69kV breakers, disconnects, insulators, and bus work at the

North and Center rings• Install 4 new 69kV breakers to tie in with Grays Ferry• Relocate controls from the neighboring generating station to newly

installed control houses (North and East yards)$22 million Grays Ferry expansion• Increased electric transmission capacity for improved reliability and

operational flexibility• Install 230-kv/69-kv transformer• Install new 69kV transmission line from Grays Ferry to Schuylkill Center

ring• Install new 230kV breakers, upgrade existing breakers, and reconfigure

Grays Ferry bus into ring busConnect fiber optic rings• Schuylkill and Grays Ferry & Waverly, Lombard, and Penn
