A SPOTLIGHT CHAT WITH JOHN SILVIA IV

How did you first hear about FCTV and what made you interested in becoming a member? I heard about FCTV through being a part of Channel 14 Educational Access Television. I had been producing a lot of projects through Channel 14 when I realized that there was a whole other side to FCTV. I thought Channel 13 would be a great way to learn new things and meet new people. How long have you lived in the Falmouth area and where did you grow up? I have lived in Falmouth all my life and can’t imagine living anywhere else. What life experiences have you had that connect you to your membership/projects at FCTV? I have been watching channels 13, 14 and 15 for years and have always been glad we have television access covering so many things in Falmouth. I entered the media world in high school and my video teacher talked many times about the “studios downtown.” My parents and a family friend pushed me to apply for a membership at FCTV and looking back at just about one year now, I am overjoyed at the warm welcoming I have received, the people I have met and the work I have done. List the projects you have done here (and the projects you have volunteered to help produce), including the most current. My major FCTV project to date was covering the Commodore games at Fuller Field last summer. Many miscellaneous studio shoots such as the town election coverage have also been interesting. I am looking forward to our new production van to make the experience more convenient as well as the new opportunities to take it around the town for continued coverage of local events. What inspired you to take on the projects you have produced at FCTV? I have always liked how the FCTV crew has given the support and training needed to produce the shows that are about our town. Being a part of a crew with such diverse knowledge and personalities has helped me expand what I can do. I am honored every time FCTV calls me to go out in the community to meet new people and film the local happenings. How will your experiences at FCTV help you in your college pursuits? Going to college next year will restrict me a little bit from doing a lot of the activities I am used to doing in town, such as dropping in to FCTV! However, Rhode Island is not too far away for weekend trips. FCTV has helped me work in different environments and given me opportunities to meet people that are important to the town, such as doctors and town representatives. Meeting new people and working with them for a common goal has been a highlight for me. I’m sure that these experiences will enhance my education. In the future, what classes do you hope to take, if any? I hope to take some more audio software courses. I find audio engineering to be a fascinating skill. I look forward to many more Apple software classes as I am very much an “Apple Junkie.” Has becoming a member of FCTV enhanced your life? If so, how? FCTV has enhanced my ability to work in an environment that is professional. That’s something that not every high school student has a chance to do.

May Election Candidate Statements Produced by FCTV The candidates for Board of Selectmen, Planning Board, and Library Trustee each give a brief statement about their worthiness for the office they are seeking in the upcoming May 19th elections. Conversations with Barbara: Peter Franklin and Highfield Hall Produced by Barbara Kanellopoulos Barbara’s latest guest is Historic Highfield Hall’s new Executive Director Peter Franklin. Together they discuss the Hall’s past, present and future. Mr. Franklin describes the various programs happening at Highfield and shares photographs of recent and past events. Civic Education: Hope for the Future Produced by Richard Batchelor After a two-year study on Civics Education in our schools, the League of Women Voters of Falmouth recently released their results at a special event at the Falmouth Library on April 16th. The program featured two speakers and a short video about Civics Education on a national level. Saving Paradise: Sea Level Rise - Changing Cape Cod's Groundwater Produced by Elise Hugus and Daniel Cojanu The US Geological Survey, Cape Cod Commission and Association to Preserve Cape Cod are studying the effects of sea level rise on our groundwater and infrastructure. In this short documentary, we hear from various experts including APCC Executive Director Ed DeWitt, The Silent Spring Institute’s Laurel Schaider, USGS Hydrologist Peter Weiskel and others. A Tempest In A Salt Pond Produced by Dick Batchelor From the Winter and Spring Speaker Series sponsored by the 300 Committee Land Trust and Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries at the Falmouth Public Library, this presentation was given by Dr. Jeff Donnelly, a geologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dr. Donnelly’s research seeks to understand the impact of a changing climate on terrestrial and coastal landforms and ecosystems. Through the examination of a 2,000-year record of sediment preserved at the bottom of Salt Pond in Falmouth, he and his team have found evidence of many large-scale storms making landfall.

League of Women Voters Candidates Night, May 6. Live coverage starts at 7:30pm on Public Channel 13.
