I have found that integrating whenever and wherever possible is a great way tomake sure that I am addressing all of the Common Core Standards and giving mystudents enough practice to reach mastery in each skill. Since close reading is mynew favorite thing, I have decided to create differentiated close readingpassages based on different subjects that children would deem interesting, ortopics that I need to cover anyway. Many systems and states do “close reading”differently, so I have left the specifics for marking up the passage out. Insteadof having the levels on the passages where students can see the numbers, Ihave decided to put a shape to designate which level it is in the top right-handcorner. They are also included in the product in this order.

A circle designates low.

A triangle designates mid.

A square designates high.

Pearl Harbor

Japan and America were at odds over issues that they had in China. America was trying tostay out of World War II. The war had started on September 1, 1939. Japan entered World War II.They joined the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers consisted of Germany, Japan, and Italy. America wassending support to the Allied Forces. The Allied Forces included Great Britain, the Soviet Union, andeventually the United States. Japan could not reach an agreement with the United States aboutmany things. Japan needed oil and rubber to attack the Allied Forces. They needed access to thePacific Ocean. America had a large Naval base in the Pacific called Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor is located between the U.S. Mainland and East Asia. Pearl Harbor is in Hawaii.Hawaii was protected by water and supposed to be a safe place for a military base. The UnitedStates moved its Naval base there in 1940 for this reason. The Naval base had aircraft carriers.Aircraft carriers are big ships that hold airplanes. The base had eight of America’s bestbattleships and airplanes. It had several other ships scattered around the base.

Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The attack was at 7:48 am. The attackwas planned out very well. It was kept secret until the day it happened. The soldiers flying theattack planes did not know what the mission was until it was time. The Japanese sent in 353airplanes in two different groups. Their purpose was to shoot the America’s airplanes so theycould not fly and attack them back. Japan also sent in submarines. They used torpedoes and divebombers to attack the ships. Dive-bombers were planes that turned the front of their planes downtoward the ships. They dropped as low to them as they could before releasing their missiles. Thismeant they would be more likely to hit their targets. The targets were the American ships.

The Americans would not go down without a fight. They fought back. They defeated someJapanese airplanes. A great number of Americans died. The Japanese succeeded in damaging alleight battleships. They even sunk four of them. They destroyed 188 airplanes. They killed over2,400 Americans. There were also over 1,100 people that were hurt. They were trying to stop theattack.

The people who died on December 7, 1941 were brave. President Franklin D. Roosevelt shareda speech with the country. He shared it on December 8, 1941. He referred to the attack on PearlHarbor as a “day that would live in infamy.” He meant that it was a day that would never beforgotten. The United States entered World War II after that speech. They entered the war tofight against Japan. Congress declared war on December 8, 1941. They declared war the day rightafter the attack.

Seven of the battleships were raised from the bottom of the ocean. Six of them were evensent back in to fight in the war. The U.S.S. Arizona is the only battleship that still remains on thebottom of the ocean floor. Since this time the United States has built a museum to remember allthe brave men and women who died. It is located over the buried USS Arizona.

Pearl Harbor was a terrible day in history. Many brave men and women fought and died. Thisattack made the United States enter into World War II. It eventually led to the Allied Powerswinning the war and defeating Germany. The men and women who died that day helped save thelives of many others in the end. The country will never forget the people who died. The country willnever forget the infamous day of December 7, 1941.
