Peaches, pictured, is a Shitzu cross who was found wandering near the Stuart Highway 6km south of Palmerston on Wednesday, September 4. Her paws, legs and belly were cut up and several claws had been ripped off, leading the RSPCA to believe she may have jumped from a moving car. She is thought to be about three-years-old and is very friendly. Call RSPCA Darwin on 8984 3795. SEVERAL local businesses have pulled together to help RSPCA Darwin with some plumbing problems. HPD Plumbing owner operator Brian Petrie said he was initially approached by the RSPCA to fix a toilet on the premises. ‘‘There was only one working toilet on the premises for all the staff and volunteers, and it was all the way at the front of the block so everyone had to take a cut lunch and thermos to get to it,’’ he said. During his investigations Mr Petrie, a qualified plumber and engineer, discovered a second toilet that everyone thought was broken actually just needed connecting to the sewerage system. So he fixed that. With donations of time, tools and materials from Flowmaster, Reeces, Think Water, Humes and Palmerston Precast, HPD Plumbing was able to install a new septic system and also a third toilet. ‘‘The RSPCA do a great job — a job I can’t do, but I can use my trade to help them,’’ Mr Petrie said. ‘‘The tradies of Darwin love their animals and are willing to give as much as they can to help the RSPCA.’’ Donations of labour and materials saved the RSPCA more than $5000. RSPCA Darwin general manager Julie Ingham said the organisation was grateful to the community-minded businesses who got involved and that the completed work will help them a lot coming into kitten season. ‘‘One of the toilets is in a building we use as an isolation facility and because of that, it needs to be kept clean and have running water,’’ she said. Palmerston Mayor Ian Abbott said the council recognised the important part that refugees play in the local community. ‘‘By signing today’s declaration, council was committed to playing an important role in helping refugees integrate into our society through a number of community programs and initiatives, from our existing community grant scheme to staging a cultural movie festival next dry season,’’ he said. It’s estimated since the end of World War II more than 800,000 refugees have been successfully settled in Australia.
