J esus appears to his disciples who were closed in a friendly house for fear of the Jewish authorities. Passing

through the closed door, Jesus confirms the newness of his risen reality. Yet he shows them his wounded side

to assure them that it was indeed he. He offers them and the entire human race the gift of peace. He entrusts to

them the mandate to carry on his mission, and gives them his own spirit, the Holy Spirit, to enable them to fulfil

the mission and to forgive sins. He, “the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (Jn 1:29) continues

his forgiving and healing ministry through the Apostles and their successors.

This means something more than establishing the sacrament of reconciliation; Jesus is also making his Apostles

participants in his victory over evil. Having completed the work the Father had given him, he now hands over

the mission to his disciples. Through their ministry inspired and moved by the Holy Spirit, the Risen Lord

continues his mission which he communicated to them during his life on earth.

People filled with the Spirit are new creatures, transformed by the breath that makes all things new. We should

never forget that Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit and sent us just as the Father sent him to bring reconciliation

and peace to the world.

New 5pm Vigil Mass Time & Opening Arrangements

W ith the onset of Winter it has been suggested that the 6pm Vigil Mass be held at 5pm instead. This could

become a permanent arrangement if there are no serious objections.

As soon as we are allowed to have 50 people attend the Church we will hold our three Masses (ie 5pm Saturday

and 8am and 9:30am Sunday), in the Church and in the Parish Centre simultaneously, to accommodate 100

parishioners at each Mass time. This is likely to be in the very near future. Bookings to attend will need to be

made through the parish office as soon as allowed by NSW Government.

The Church is open for private prayer from 9am to 4pm weekdays. There is currently a limit of 10 people at a

time in the Church, who must sign in and out at the door, with contact details (a public health requirement), use

hand sanitiser provided and keep social distance in the pews.

Baptisms are going ahead with the limited numbers by appointment only. Reconciliation is available by appoint-

ment with Fr Vincent or Fr Bill, in the interview room of the parish office. Please call us on 4332 2216 to book.

There is a website called massregister.com.au where parishioners may register their details once only for Church-

es of intended visits. This way you only need initial your entry and exit of the Church when visiting.

The Holy Spirit Speaks Through Conscience

T he Holy Spirit speaks to a person through his conscience, indicating what is right

and wrong, and helps him to make the decisions that correspond to the will of

God. The Holy Spirit guides in a twofold manner: on one hand, through the conscience

and, on the other, through the magisterium of the Church.

The Holy Spirit is not only the one who guides us "to the fullness of truth," according

to the words of John the Evangelist, but is also the "interior teacher," as St. Paul

describes him. He does not just say what should be done, rather he also gives the

capacity to do what he commands.

Conscience is the ambit where the Holy Spirit exercises his function. Through this

'organ,' the guidance of the Holy Spirit goes beyond the Church, to all people.

In this personal and intimate realm of the conscience, the Holy Spirit instructs us with

'good inspirations,' or 'interior lights,' and stimulates us to follow the good and avoid

evil, attractions and inclinations of the heart that cannot be naturally explained,

because they are often contrary to the direction that nature would want to take.

However, the Holy Spirit also guides believers through the magisterium of the Church,

It is just as deadly to try to forego either of the two guides of the Spirit. When the

interior testimony is neglected, we easily fall into legalism and authoritarianism; when

the exterior, apostolic testimony is neglected, we fall into subjectivism and fanaticism.

When everything is reduced to just the personal, private listening to the Spirit, the path

is opened to an unstoppable process of division and subdivision, because everyone

believes they are right.

We should recognise however that there is also the opposite risk, that of making the

external and public testimony of the Spirit absolute, ignoring the internal testimony

that works through the conscience enlightened by grace.

It is the ideal of a healthy harmony between listening to what the Spirit says to me, as

an individual, and what he says to the Church as a whole and through the Church to

individuals. The most favourable condition for making a good discernment is the

habitual interior disposition to do God's will in every situation.

Like talented actors we should tend our ear toward the voice of the prompter that is

hidden, so we can faithfully recite our part in the scene of life. It is easier than we think,

because our prompter speaks to us from the inside, he teaches us all things, he instructs

us in everything. It is enough to just give an interior glance, a movement of our heart,

a prayer.

The Apple Sermon

A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chica-

go. They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for

Friday night’s dinner. In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen

inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples.

Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach

the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding. All but one. He paused, took a deep

breath, got in touch with his feelings, and experienced a twinge of compassion for the

girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on without him,

waved goodbye, told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at their home des-

tination and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where

the apples were all over the terminal floor. He was glad he did. (continued next page)

The 16 year old girl was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her

cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce

as the crowd swirled about her, no one stopping and no one to care for her plight.

The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back on the

table and helped organise her display. As he did this, he noticed that many of them

had become battered and bruised; these he set aside in another basket. When he had

finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, “Here, please take this $40 for the

damage we did. Are you okay?”

She nodded through her tears. He continued on with, “I hope we didn’t spoil your day

too badly.” As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out

to him, “Mister…” he paused and turned to look back into those blind eyes. She contin-

ued, “Are you Jesus?”

He stopped in mid-stride and he wondered. Then slowly he made his way to catch the

later flight with that question burning and bouncing about in his soul: “Are you Jesus?”

Do people mistake you for Jesus? That’s our destiny, is it not? To be so much like Jesus

that people cannot tell the difference as we live and interact with a world (shopping,

working, reacting to others that are serving us) that is blind to his love, life and grace.

If we claim to know him, we should live, walk and act as he would. Knowing him is

more than simply quoting Scripture and going to Church. It’s actually living the Word

as life unfolds day to day.

You are the apple of his eye even though we, too, have been bruised by a fall. He

stopped what he was doing and picked you and me up on a hill called Calvary and

paid in full for our damaged fruit. Let us live like we are worth the price he paid.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Adoration in June

A doration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on all Saturdays of June in repara-

tion to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts. There is a limit of 20 people at a time

in the Prayer Room in accord with the 4m2 rule. Prayer and quiet time will be held

throughout the day from 9:30am to Benediction at the new time of 4:30pm (to finish

before the proposed 5pm Mass).

Charitable Works Fund Appeal

T he Charitable Works Fund supports five charities that provide faith based

services to the people of the Diocese of Broken Bay. Every Parish in the Diocese is

set a CWF fundraising target. This ensures that the five charities that receive funding

from the CWF can plan and budget accordingly: CatholicCare Hospital Chaplaincy

and Pastoral Care Practitioner Program, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD),

St Lucy’s School and St Edmund’s College for students with disabilities, and the

Ephpheta Centre for people with deafness or hearing impairment.

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted many areas of our lives. With collections not

being able to be taken up at Masses we would ask you to make your donations in one
