Udhampuri gets national award Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Sept 24: Eminent poet, writer, scholar and critic Dr. Jitendra Udhampuri has been selected for conferment of national award for literature-2015. The award will be presented by the President of India in a function to be held at the plenary hall of Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on October 1. The award comprised of Memonto, citation and Rs-2.5 lacs in cash. Dr. Udhampuri is a house hold name in the Jammu region of the state. After rendering 30 yrs of mer- itorious service in the field of broadcasting, he retired as senior Director, All India Radio. Besides being a reputed broad- caster, Dr. Udhampuri has cease- lessly worked over 50 years for the enrichment of Dogri, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi literature. He is author of 32 books in Dogri, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi languages. Some of his notable works have been translated in other lan- guages like English, Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, Nepali and Czech. He is a trend setter in modern Dogri poetry and has introduced several innovative themes and experi- mented with new styles in his verse. His yeoman service to the cause of Dogri, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi literature and culture has been recognized by numerous hon- ours and awards conferred on him at the state, national and interna- tional levels. These include presti- gious Padmashree awards, Sahitya Akademi award, Sahitya Akademi's national award for translation, another national award by the central hindi directorate, prestigious senior fellowship by Union Ministry of culture, role of honour by the governor J&K Govt, gold medal and certificate of merit by J&K Govt. Decorated five times in the year 1985,1 986, 1990, 2004 and 2011 by the J&K State academy of art culture and languages for his best creative literary works. Policeman volunteers tractor for people’s convenience Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Upholding the tenets of humanity, a policeman in south Kashmir's Shopian district volunteered a tractor for general public to facil- itate their crossing of Ranbi Ara stream in absence of a bridge and diversion. Due to heavy rains couple of days ago, a diversion over Ranbi Ara stream at Batapora in moun- tainous region of Shopian was washed away - fourth time since last year - leading to immense inconvenience to local populace. In absence of the diversion, the public movement came to halt as gushing waters of Ranbi Ara didn't let anyone to cross and there was huge risk if any attempt would have been made by any individual. However, a policeman name- ly Abdul Majeed came to the help of people and volunteered his tractor. The policeman, who is deployed in District Police Lines (DPL) Shopian, didn't charge anyone for crossing the Ranbi Ara and hundreds of people throughout the day benefited from the tractor service. "I didn't charge anyone and filled the fuel myself. As you know everyone is in need this time because of Eid, so I decided to volunteer my tractor for peo- ple," the policeman said. Locals hailed the policeman and show- ered praises on him. When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner of Shopian, Bashir Ahmad told Excelsior that they are working to restore the diver- sion. "By tomorrow evening, the connectivity would be restored," he said. CVC briefs Governor about VC's functioning Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Sept 24: Kuldeep Khoda, Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), Jammu and Kashmir, called on Governor N.N. Vohra, here at the Raj Bhavan today, and briefed him about the functioning of the Vigilance Commission and the various objectives achieved since the Commission's establishment. Mr. Khoda apprised the Governor about the to-date status of the complaints received by the Commission, their disposal and the conclusions arrived at by the CVC for making the institution more effective and result oriented in eradicating the menace of cor- ruption, particularly by establish- ing deterrence against the corrupt elements in the State. HCC gets Rs 1783 cr NH work in J&K NEW DELHI, Sept 24: Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) today said it has bagged a Rs 1,783.42-crore con- tract from NHAI for construc- tion of a highway in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). "The company has been awarded a prestigious NHAI contract worth Rs 1,783.42 crore to construct a 36-km high- way, which includes 3 kms of tunnels between Ramban and Banihal in Jammu & Kashmir," Hindustan Construction Company said in a BSE filing. It further said: "The project is part of NHDP Phase II pro- gramme of NHAI on NH 1A (now NH 44) and is known for its difficult terrain and low tem- peratures, especially in the win- ter season." HCC President and CEO- E&C Arun Karambelkar said: "This project not only allows us to further expand our presence in road-related business seg- ments, but also gives us immense pride as this highway will contribute to infrastructure growth of our nation." HCC added that highway NH 1A is a major road connect- ing Srinagar with the rest of the country. The stock was trading at Rs 18.40, up 3.08 per cent, on BSE. (PTI) Rs 566 cr released by treasuries Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Sept 24: The Finance Department has released an amount of Rs 566 crore from various treasuries of the State September 22 to 23. All the payments for which the bills/cheques were received at the treasuries upto September 23, 2015 were paid particularly in respect of salaries, wages, con- tractors/firms, land compensation, local bodies as also all such pay- ments relating to general public and the employees. In order to ensure that the pay- ments are made smoothly at the treasuries without any inconven- ience to the general public, the Director General, Accounts & Treasuries, on the instructions of Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu visited all the treasuries of district Srinagar personally today. Don’t share videos on internet: Geelani Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Sept 24: A day after appealing people not to resort to any act on Eid which could hurt the sentiments of other communities, the separatist leader and hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani today urged the people not to make and share videos on internet. In a statement here, the sepa- ratist leader while extending his heartfelt greetings of Eid-ul- Adha to the Muslims of world in general and Jammu and Kashmir in particular, appealed people to celebrate Eid with austerity, sim- plicity and according to the Islamic principles. He said that the aim of a Muslim is to attain benevolence of Almighty Allah by this sacri- fice so they will perform this obligation according to the true spirit of Islam. Asking people not to make and share the videos of the slaughtering of the sacrifi- cial animals, Geelani said that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had pro- hibited the slaughtering of one animal in front of another ani- mal.

Asking people notto make and share the videos ofthe slaughtering of the sacrifi-cial animals, Geelani said thatour beloved ProphetMuhammad (PBUH) had pro-hibited the slaughtering of oneanimal in front of another ani-mal.
