HUNTING TEST AND WC/WCX What an exciting weekend we all had at our annual hunt test and WC/WCX. This year we mentored the Rockwall Retriever club for their first hunt test. Because of this partnership, our entries increased in both junior and senior. It turned out to be a fabulous partnership for both clubs with the sharing of expenses. We had volunteers working that had never been to a hunt test! We had both tests staffed with several new members (actually they haven’t been voted in yet). We had a shooter from the Lone Star Retriever Club, Bill Mullican -- one shot and the bird was down. Thanks so much, Bill, for spending the weekend shooting for us. I hope you had a good time! Pam Richcreek did a great job of ordering the birds for both tests and she spent all day Saturday in a blind operating the winger. We brought in $475 on a raffle. Among other things, the favorite prize was a Gunner’s Up winger. John Knapp was the lucky winner! Congratulations! Nancy Crowley made gift baskets for the judges and they were beautiful! Patrick was there and took some wonderful pictures on Saturday! And what would a hunt test be without a wonderful lunch prepared by Ann Burke? The food was not the usual hunt test lunch – I mean, who has pasta salad and fruit salad at a hunt test? We do, of course, thanks to Ann! Yum! Our judges really were pleasantly surprised at the food we served. And of course we all got three homemade cookies in our lunches. They were so goooood! It definitely gave us the energy to finish all the tests! We had a lot of passes in the hunt test, gave out a bunch of qualifying ribbons and a bunch of title ribbons! Thanks again to our Senior judges Ron Cerney and Frances Powrie and our Junior judges Sarah Willett and Judy Cerney for giving up their Saturday to come judge for us. Saturday night we had a tailgate BBQ that had fantastic food, in spite of the drizzle! Sunday, the WC/WCX was faced with muddy roads which caused all the contestants to have long walks to the line since we couldn’t drive past the front gate. Everyone survived! Terry Thornton, Jim Richardson and Anna Curry cooked burgers and they really hit the spot! Pam Richcreek did a great job of chairing the WC/WCX. Not only did she make sure everyone had white shirts, but she was the marshal as well. On top of all that, she ran her dog!

All the WC dogs passed and two dogs in the WCX passed. Big thanks to Gary Sandusky for pulling the trailer out to the property and then picking up the trailer going thru all the mud on Sunday. He took the trailer home and replaced the lights, rewired the lights, replaced the ball foot and got us a set of chocks for the wheels. Thank you, thank you Carol and Gary! I couldn’t have done this test without the help of so many people: John and Janet Frick-are you tired of me yet? These two people guided me through the pre-test organization and were there both days to help. Sherri Farmer-thanks so much for helping me organize this test! And thanks for ordering all the ribbons and for all your support. The following worked the raffle, threw the ducks, fired the popper guns, manned the gates, marshalled. TAILS FROM THE SOUTHWEST…

This past weekend was the AKC National Agility Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, also recently dubbed "The Dust Bowl." Don't get me wrong. This event, as has been witnessed in the past, was done impressively well. Bypassing for the moment the incredible runs seen, we move instead to the ease of checking in on Thursday afternoon when there to set up crates, etc. I gotta tell you, this group of folks from Oklahoma are some of the most hospitable people ever to run a dog event. Friendly faces greeted you with your Goody Bag full of Tulsa information, vendors gimmies and don't forget your T-shirt (been there, got the t-shirt). The vendor line-up was awesome. You could buy exercise equipment for you and your dog, shirts, sweats, leashes, leads, collars, purses, and even socks. Public crating was spacious enough – however, it was in the midst of the dust bowl and so we (me and Patty Drom, AKC and USDAA agility judge and owner of Dallas Dog Sports) did a last-minute rental of a stall. Being a livestock/fairgrounds facility, the stalls were large enough to house a Clydesdale with room to spare. It was not unusual to see three and four exhibitors housed in one stall with mats, crates, chairs and miscellaneous equipment. Stalls were decorated to tout one's state and/or training facility. Being so close to Texas, you can just about imagine all the Texas stuff hanging around. This was the first year the AKC included the Preferred Classes into competition. Not just for the regular runs, but the top "Preferred" dogs competed through to the finals and each winner had the honor of being crowned the "First" of each height level Preferred Dog ever. Friday, the first day of competition, was the State Tournament day combined with the International classes. I chose to run International with Dancer. The two-inch difference from 16 to 18 bothers her none and she simply sails. If you checked along the way, you already know that we (Texas) took a second (again) to California. They just have so many good handlers and so many good dogs. Not that we don't here – guess we were just off our game. Keep in mind that in the ISC classes the broad jump is back in play and threadles are a given. 270s and 180s abound with sharp turns into nasty weave entries. Gotta be on your toes and be prepared to support your dog through it all. We have decided here that we need to be wearing T-shirts to remind us to Work Every Obstacle! Saturday the fun began. Course map distribution was at 6:00 a.m. (yes, it was still dark outside) with general walk-throughs starting at 6:15. At 6:45 all rings were cleared as the briefing was given over the loudspeaker and the Anthem was sung by Andy Hartmann of the AKC. This was accompanied on Sunday by a violinist. It was a lovely tribute to our country which offers us the freedom to do what we do with our dogs. While the courses on Saturday were more traditional, they did offer some real challenges. Course times were fair but just a little tight. Gotta be of the upper caliber in order to qualify on these runs. With 290 20" dogs, 178 12" dogs, and 225 16" dogs, you have to know that the competition was tight. There were 61 26" dogs that were more than awesome to watch. I believe the smallest group of dogs was the 24 inchers. There was not a group of dogs not worth the watching. The 4s and 8s were quick and mighty. No matter what your runs on Saturday, you and your dog ran the Hybrid class on Sunday morning. This run is mostly jumps with at least one tunnel, one contact (A-frame or dog walk) and the teeter. Yes, weaves are included. Another winding course, not as winding as Saturday's, this one was built for speed. What fun it was. As soon as the Hybrid class was completed (all levels), the Challengers ring was set up. The Challengers rounds this year for the first time, as mentioned above, included the Preferred dogs. While they ran more slowly than the Championship dogs, it was still delightful to have included their performances. AKC did announce that 2011 would be hosted in Perry, Georgia. We stayed till the bitter end, cheering for folks we know and folks we don't know. Well, everyone else cheered. I was in Week 4 of the dreaded "crud" and had no voice. Can't tell you how much fun it is to try running a dog in that noise level with no voice – let alone trying to breathe in the dust while coughing. The weather had not completely cooperated as we had cold mornings (in the 30s – yeah, I know) and winds up to 35 mph blowing across the plains. Ever wonder about the song? At least we had no rain or snow. With the 2010 agility nationals now behind us, we look forward to the next month or so of regular trials. One of my favorite places, Wichita Falls, Texas, is hosting a trial at the end of April. Talk about hospitable folks. On Saturday evening of the three-day trials, the club gets together and cooks a huge pot luck which they use to feed all exhibitors from the weekend. NO CHARGE! Is that cool or what? They do this as well for their obedience trials. It's a bring-your-own if you want wine or beer, but who cares! Well, folks… It's time to close for another issue. Sure wish I could get up for the NOCI agility trial one of these days. I look forward to hearing about all the good/great runs, all the new titles, and all the successes from one and all. The Brag jar should be filling soon. Run Fast, Run Clean, Run Loud!

Happy Tailwagging to you all….. Lora Seale and all the Paws

Attitude Every situation in life can have two different

responses. We can look at the roses or the thorns.

Here are some thoughts to get you through. Your

attitude is a matter of choice.

You can complain about taking the dogs for

another walk, or rejoice in the fact that they are

helping to keep you physically fit

You can grumble that the dogs barking woke up

the baby, or be thankful that the same barking

protects the house from intruders.

You can cry when your dog makes you look like

a fool on the agility course, or embrace the

opportunity to learn humility.

You can murmur when you worked extra hard

all weekend at the show, or enjoy the friendships

made and the wealth of knowledge gained by

watching.

You can lament over missing a qualifying run by

1/2 second, or be thankful for another show.

You can complain when your dog jumps over

the wrong jump on course, or be grateful he is not

lame, and CAN jump.

You can be upset that your dog happily ran over

to greet the judge during your run, or shout for joy

that he didnt growl and bite him!

You can be horrified that your dog ran excitedly

into the ring before his turn, or be elated that he

loves agility so much.

You can grumble about the dirty pawprints on

the floor, or be glad for the chance to mop and get an

aerobic workout at the same time.

You can be grumpy when you have to get up in

the middle of the night because Rover has an upset

stomach after getting into the garbage, or gratefully

remember that he never left your side when you

were sick in bed.
