As we approach the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, it has cer-tainly been a momentous and historic year for Universal MusicPublishing Group. Even as we anticipate the final approval process onour acquisition of BMG Music Publishing, UMPG and our global staffhave been focused on continuing to sign some of the biggest namesin our industry, including Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Carol BayerSager, and Juanes. We have also continued our strong chart perfor-mance globally in addition to winning many significant awards, suchas: ASCAP’s Country Music Awards Songwriter of the Year with RiversRutherford, ASCAP’s Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of the Year with 50Cent, BMI Songwriter of the Year with Mariah Carey, Best InternationalBreakthrough Artist and Best British Group at the Brits (Jack Johnsonand Kaiser Chiefs), GRAMMY Song of the Year and Album of the Yearwith U2, inductions into the UK Hall of Fame for Prince and Bon Jovi,as well as Oscar and Golden Globe wins for Gustavo Santaolalla, andmany more.

2007 will also be a historic year for our industry as we have a pend-ing copyright royalty process in Washington, D.C. following on theheels of the tribunal process in the UK. Along with the continuedgrowth of our digital business, the pending resolution of rates for suchareas as subscription, digital downloads and streams as well as thephysical rate for CD’s in the U.S. in addition to our industry settingrates for video online, etc. will all have major implications for thefuture of our industry.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our global staff for their con-tinued strong efforts in delivering record breaking results for UMPGand continuing their hard work as we face the exciting challengesahead of us in 2007.

MONEY MAKERLudacris, the multi-platinum “visionary businessman,” asIsland Def Jam Chairman LA Reid attributes him, believes truesuccess is to have balance between opposing conflicts of life.Within that balance is the source of inspiration for Chris“Ludacris” Bridges’ fifth studio album, Release Therapy, whichdebuted at No.1 on Billboard’s 200 and Top R&B Chart. Releaseversus Therapy, success versus tribulations; balance betweenthe two is the foundation of Ludacris’ new project.

Bridges is dealing with a wide range of topics on ReleaseTherapy, from the huge debut single “Money Maker” withPharrell Williams, (#1 and fastest growing single on the Hot100 with an audience reachng over 125 Million), to themes ofabuse and escape in “Runaway Love” (featuring Mary J. Blige).

Bridges is striving to achieve something beyond rappers of histime, “People can either love me or hate me, but they’ll alwaysrespect me,” said Ludacris referring to his recently broadenedcareer to motion picture. By acquiring a SAG Award, an NAACPImage Award nomination for his performance in Oscar winningmotion picture “Crash,” Oscar nominated film “Husle & Flow,”a role in an upcoming feature film starring opposite VinceVaughn and Paul Giammatti (“Fred Claus”) in addition to beingfounder of the Ludacris Foundation, the rapper has alsoacquired what he has yearned for since the commencement ofhis career; to be considered not only a “vital member of theIsland Def Jam Family” (Shawn Carter, Pres. and CEO of DefJam Recordings), but also a well-respected, well-roundedartist clearly making a strong impact in popular culture.

Elton JohnElton John began life as Reginald Dwight. By the late 60’s after a decade’sapprenticeship playing clubs and pubs he had become Elton John andhooked up with lyricist Bernie Taupin. On the back of the instant classic“Your Song” and the career making showcase shows at LA’s Troubadourclub, his second album, titled simply Elton John became a hit on both sidesof the Atlantic.

A series of landmark albums quickly followed, four alone in 1971. By 1972,with his first US number one album Honky Chateau, containing such hits as“Rocket Man” and “Honky Cat,” Elton had become a bonafide superstar. Thenext six consecutive albums topped the US charts, a string bettered only byThe Beatles. The following year “Crocodile Rock” became his first US numberone single. This period marked the critical and commercial peak of Elton’scareer. The rightly famous double record Goodbye Yellow Brick Road wasreleased in 1973 and possibly his masterwork Captain Fantastic and the DirtBrown Cowboy in 1975. The later, incidentally, was the first album ever to debutat number one in the States.

The early 80’s found Elton reunited with Bernie Taupin, enjoying a string of smashhit singles such as “I’m Still Standing” and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It TheBlues.” In 1994 Elton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 1997 fol-lowing the tragic death of Princess Diana the tribute to her, the re-recorded“Candle in the Wind,” became the biggest selling record of all time.

The new decade finds the newly knighted Sir EltonJohn still working with Bernie Taupin, andstill releasing some of his most critical-ly acclaimed records, including2006’s The Captain & The Kid.Elton John, an extraordinarycareer still very much a workin progress. RISING STAR: POLOWUMPG hit-maker Polow was recently featured on the cover of Billboardmagazine. Excerpt from article:

Producers normally slave over the boards to create a signature sound - thinkthe Neptunes' "zing" or Kanye West's nostalgic soul samples. But up-and-coming producer Polow Da Don does the complete opposite. And while aim-ing for a sonically diverse catalog, the in-demand rapper-cum-producer hasearned four top 10 hits in the past two years, including Fergie's recentBillboard Hot 100 chart-topper, "London Bridge."

"If I do a beat that sounds like another beat I did, I'll scratch it immediately,"says the 27-year-old Atlantan, born Polow-Freache Jones (his first name is ofFrench descent). "I've had a legitimate R&B hit, a legitimate rap/pop record anda legitimate pop record, and they all sound totally different."

Polow signed to Universal Music Publishing Group in November 2004 in a dealbrokered by his childhood friend Ethiopia Habtemariam, VP Urban CreativeAffairs. "For a lot of his tracks, he'll have hook or melody ideas already becausehe hears where he wants it to go. I know a couple of writers that are actually intim-idated by his tracks," says Habtemariam, who is also responsible for bringing

Ciara, Chris Brown and Ludacris to UMPG. "I don't think he'll ever admit this—he totally believes in himself—but when he steps intothe studio he's insecure about it so he does everything he can to make sure a record is perfect. Up until the last stage of mixing andmatching the record, he's making changes to the track to make it that much bigger."

+ BREAK-OUT PRODUCERS: POLOW & CANDICE NELSON

Make Room for Candice NelsonSpecializing in melody, lyrics and production, songwriter and producer Candice Nelson is current-ly working on projects with Ciara, Fantastia Barrino, Katherine McPhee, Timbaland, KevinMichael, Keke Palmer and Tiffany Evans. Nelson is also a part of the hit-making team The Clutch, consisting of fellow UMPG writer/producers Keri Hilson and Balewa Muhammad as well as J. Que,Ezekiel Lewis. This fearsome five-some putting out the heat are collectively responsible for thesongs “Take Me As I Am” by Mary J. Blige, “She Don’t” by LeToya Luckett, “Young Love” by ChrisBrown, “4 Minutes” by Avant, and “Red Light” by Usher. They’ve also knocked out recent hits forDanity Kane, Ludacris, the Pussycat Dolls, Omarion and Beyonce. Nelson’s catalogue consists ofAlicia Keys “Heartburn,” Jennifer Lopez “He’ll Be Back,” 7 cuts on Brandy’s Afrodisiac, DaveHollister “Don’t Take My Girl Away,” Yolanda Adams “He Will Arrive,” Mary J. Blige “Take Me As IAm,” Jagged Edge “Stunnas,” Beyonce “Resentment,” and LeToya Lucket “She Don’t.”

ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN THE MAINSTREAMBy Guest Columnist: Joanna Puglisi, Associate Director, Film & TVElectronic music is an extremely versatile genre, excellent for synchronizationbecause of its ability to emote such a vast range of moods. From ominous, brood-ing and aggressive to ethereal, fun and romantic. Electronic music continues to beabsorbed into the mainstream by way of synch use in film and TV. Most current pop, rock and hip-hop tracks incorporate electronic elements such as drum machines, loops, samples and scratches.

Though the genre is commonly associated with dance music, the growing numbersof sub-genres within it are actually designed more for listening rather than dancing. The listening side is similar to traditional film score in that it conveys emotions andsets the tone of a scene without the use of lyrics. The many layers of sonic texturesand grooves create lush soundscapes.

Sub-genres:Downtempo: Its calming grooves usually contain the loungey, rhythmic influencesof jazz and the lush strings of an orchestra. UMPG artists in this style include Zero7, Royksopp and King Kooba. DJ Shadow is a great example of a downtempo artistthat is constantly blurring the lines between genres by mixing in hip-hop, rock andturntablism.

Big beat: The most popular form to crossover into the synch world is big beat, whichhas vocals and are generally up-tempo. UMPG writers like Fatboy Slim and theChemical Brothers are practitioners of this style.

House music: This sub-genre has been brought into the mainstream by such artistsas UMPG’s Basement Jaxx, who employ many of the rhythmic and vocal elementsmade popular during the seventies soul, funk, and disco era.

Advertisers are getting more adventurous and attempting to gain street credibilityby tapping into underground electronic cultures. Film trailers and TV promos areconstantly requesting dark and aggressive tracks for action packed spots and fun,big beat type tracks for comedies and other more light-hearted programs. Crimescene oriented TV shows gravitate towards the more obscure, glitchy side of down-tempo songs, which are chosen for their ability to build tension and create movement.

Electronic music will continue to be a major influence, while still maintaining itsunderground roots at the hands of aspiring producers and artists who continue topush the boundaries of creating music with machines.

KILLERS“The Best Band To Come From Anywhere, Ever.”

After performing more than four-hundred gigs, and selling more that five million copies of their blockbuster

debut, Hot Fuss – the Killers thought they'd take a well-deserved break. But just two weeks after they got

home to Las Vegas, the Killers were breaking ground on their follow-up masterpiece, Sam's Town.

While Hot Fuss spawned massive hits like "Somebody Told Me," "Mr. Brightside," "Smile Like You Mean It" and

"All These Things That I've Done,” lead singer Brandon Flowers calls Sam's Town a cohesive set. NME says that

on Sam's Town,"The Killers reject their mantle as The Best British Band to Come From the U.S., and stake their

claim to the less confusing title of The Best Band To Come From Anywhere, Ever."

Armed with songs that they'd written on the road -- like “When We Were Young” (which is killing at radio), "My

List," "Why Do I Keep Counting?" and "Bones" (for which Tim Burton recently directed his first-ever music

video) -- the Killers entered their Vegas rehearsal space. In just three weeks they created an arsenal of poten-

tial album cuts, and, as Vegas' prodigal sons (and the most beloved band to ever rise out of the Nevada desert),

the Killers got the virgin run in the brand-new, studio in Vegas' Palms Hotel & Casino.

With all of their accolades – five GRAMMY nominations, two Moon Men from MTV's VMAs -- and rave reviews

for Sam's Town streaming in, the Killers are the first to admit that their musical journey has just begun. And

what better place to go than Sam's Town, named after a real-life casino that sits directly between Flowers'

hometown of Henderson, Nevada, and all the bright lights of Las Vegas.
