    What an honor to be a part of the Virginia Union University family as we C E L E B R A T E 1 5 0 Y E A R S O F P R O V I D I N G A B R I D G E

    T O I N T E L L E C T U A L F R E E D O M A N D E Q U A L I T Y . We chose this theme because it symbolizes the building of a connection to a

new life for newly freed slaves. With the establishment of Virginia Union University in Lumpkins Jail in 1865, construction of the bridge

would begin and that bridge would provide the education that would lead to true freedom.

Today, the bridge is strong and tens of thousands of Virginia Union alumni continue to cross the bridge to intellectual freedom and to

make significant contributions in our city, state, and nation. We have just dedicated our first new building in more than 15 years, we are

starting a new masters degree in curriculum and instruction, and our online and continuing education options are increasing.

I am pleased to report that we have seen a 30 percent increase in our endowment during the past five years, ranking us eighth among

United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institutions. We have increased our scholarship support to our students from just over $2 million

each year to nearly $4 million during the last academic year.

We have upgraded campus computer labs, built new chemistry and biology labs, established 39 new SMART classrooms, and made

several buildings more energy efficient. Overall, in the last five years, we have performed campus upgrades of approximately $10

million without an additional debt burden.

It is indeed a time to celebrate. We have planned an exciting year of Sesquicentennial activities for our anniversary. We hope that you

will review the options outlined in this latest annual report and join us on campus as often as possible. We also solicit your continued

support and hope that you will use the envelope provided in this publication to make a special 150th anniversary gift. God bless you

and God bless Virginia Union University.

    Sincerely,

Claude G. Perkins, Ph.D. President and CEO

Virginia Union University The Bridge To Intellectual Freedom

I think this is a miracle story, Virginia Union, bridge to intellectual freedom and equality. The bridge is a miracle, that we can sustain anything under the conditions that we have borne for 150 years is a miracle in and of itself. When our enslaved forebears were brought in chains to Richmond they were taken to Lumpkins Jail to be auctioned off as human commodities Consider and never cease considering the scope of the crime. Two-hundred-forty-six years in which we lost not only our freedom but we lost our languages, our religions, our cultures, our customs . That we survived at all to stand here today is nothing short of a miracle.

~ Dr. Randall Robinson Author, Foreign Policy Advocate Law Professor, VUU alumnus

A steady rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of more than 700 students, faculty, alumni, and friends who packed Coburn Hall on

September 8 for the official opening of Virginia Union Universitys 150th anniversary celebrations. Please enjoy the following excerpts

from the enlightening and emotional ceremony:

Weve come here today to celebrate the 150th anniversary, to celebrate the journey, the bridge, the intellectual bridge that has brought us over. Weve also come to report on the bridge. Weve come to report to our forefathers and foremothers that the bridge is intact, that the bridge still surfaces above the words of ignorance and the waves that would hold us back from progress.

The bridge still stands through the storm, the wind, the rain, through criticism, and critique. This intellectual bridge called Virginia Union still stands.

~ Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson Chairman, VUU Board of Trustees

1865. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, the American Baptist Home Mission Society (ABHMS) established a school to educate newly freed slaves in Richmond, Virginia. The only space available for rent for the newly established Richmond Theological School for Freedmen was Lumpkins Jail, a former slave jail and auction complex.

1870. In 1870, Richmond Theological moved to the United States Hotel, on the corner of 19th and Main streets in Richmond, where it stayed for nearly 30 years. By the end of 1880, Dr. Charles

Corey, the head of the school, stated that student preachers had converted approximately 7,000 souls.

1899. ABHMS merged Richmond Theological with Wayland Seminary, a Washington, D.C. school with a similar mission, to form Virginia Union University. Nine noble buildings were constructed on Lombardy Street, then known as Sheep Hill. New York based architect John Coxhead developed the buildings using grey granite and a Romanesque architecture at a cost of $500,000.

1932. Hartshorn Memorial College merged with Virginia Union in 1932 and the university became a coed institution of higher education. Hartshorn received its charter in 1884 and was the first African American womens college to offer bachelors degrees. It was located at the corner of Leigh and Lombardy streets.

1939. Following the completion of the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York, Virginia Union was awarded the Belgian Pavilion from the exhibit presented by Belgium. The building was taken apart and transported to

Richmond where it was reassembled as the Belgian Friendship Building. Fundraising to finance these efforts was spearheaded by Dr. John Malcus Ellison, the first African American and VUU alumnus to become president of the University. In 1942, Dr. Ellison initiated the Graduate School of Religion.

1960. On February 22, 1960, nearly 200 Virginia Union students marched from campus to downtown Richmond to protest segregated lunch counters at Thalhimers Department Store. Thirty-four students were arrested and became known as the Richmond 34.

1964. Storer College, the first institution of higher education for African Americans in West Virginia, merged with Virginia Union University. Storer awarded its first degrees in 1942, but closed in 1955 due to loss of funding after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision ended legal segregation.

1997. On February 13, 1997, the L. Douglas Wilder Library and Learning Resource Center was dedicated. The building honors Virginia Union alumnus L. Douglas Wilder, the countrys first elected African American governor.

2014. As of October 7, 2014, all Virginia Union University fall sports were in first place or tied for first place in the CIAA. This is a first in the history of the Virginia Union athletic program. The football team and volleyball team were tied for first place as of October 7 and the mens cross-country team was the top team in the CIAA, as of October 7.

Sesquicentennial Celebration Continues with Dedication of New BuildingVirginia Union University (VUU) continued its year-long celebration

of its 150th anniversary with the ribbon-cutting for the new Living

and Learning Center on its historic Lombardy Street campus at

    11:00 a.m. on September 24, 2014. The new 68,000-square-

foot facility provides for 240 beds in suite-style rooms for

students, as well as a conference and seminar facility.

Virginia Union President Dr. Claude G. Perkins joined faculty,

staff, students, alumni, members of the Board of Trustees, and

elected officials in celebrating the official opening of the new

facility. This place was a place built to last, said Dr. Perkins,

referring to the first nine buildings constructed on the Lombardy

Street campus in 1899. The new building is patterned after the

Romanesque architecture used in the original buildings.

Dr. Perkins emphasized the theme of the 150th anniversary

celebration: Virginia Union University, A Bridge to Intellectual

Freedom and Equality. The connection is connecting our past

with our future, Dr. Perkins said. It tells our students that the

bridge is already there and has already been crossed. Theres no

excuse for you not to cross it.

Dr. John W. Kinney, Senior Vice President and Dean of the Samuel DeWitt

Proctor School of Theology, offered the blessing for the new building:

We thank God for the living saints who are still dedicated and committed

to the mission and purpose, goals, and the destiny of Virginia Union

University. So as we dedicate this building together, we are recommitting

ourselves, upholding the history, bringing life to the present, and

stretching ourselves to create a future where the unborn will come and

say, There is a bridge that has brought me over, my grandmother, my

grandfather, my mother, and my father. Thanks be to God!

There is still work to be done, said Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson,

Chairman of the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees. I am

encouraged and you ought to be encouraged by this building. This

building is only a sign of our potential. If you appreciate this building,

you must appreciate it in the light of our promise, and not in the light

of us having reached our destination.

On October 10, 2014, the VUU Board of Trustees announced a $2.1 million anonymous gift, most of which will be used to pay the remaining debt on the Learning Center, the conference and seminar facility that anchors the new Living and Learning Center. The Board also approved the anonymous donors request to name the building for VUU President Dr. Claude G. Perkins.
