This year, we are once again celebrating the spirit of innovation at Gammon with our 11th annual competition since 1999. A total of 60 ideas were submitted by our staff across Hong Kong and Singapore, demonstrating that innovation continues to thrive at Gammon.
Innovation is part of the culture of Gammon and has become intrinsic to the way we do business across the company. It not only gives us a strong competitive advantage in the industry but also contributes to our reputation as a rewarding place in which to work and pursue a career.
The spirit of innovation is alive and well in our people, who contribute not only to Gammon’s annual Innovation Competition but also our monthly competitions that recognise the innovators among our staff, subcontractors and suppliers.
Winners of the Innovator of the Month competition, who are announced in our CEO’s Message at the end of each month, are awarded an iPad or iPhone. Anyone who reports an implemented innovation is also entitled to a $500 cash coupon.
We invite you to use your imagination to continue driving innovation across Gammon. By doing so, you help us improve safety, profitability, and our environmental impact, while increasing the value of our business to the communities in which we operate.
Innovation Competition selection process
The annual Innovation Competition is open to all staff of Gammon, our subcontractors and suppliers.
To select the Grand Prize winner, Gammon’s management looked at all entries and shortlisted the top six, which were then entered into the final round.
On the day of the final judging, team members presented their ideas to our panel of judges. The winner, 1st and 2nd runners up were decided by the panel.

Building Information Modelling for OPUS HONG KONG
Team members: Sherman Tang, Kwok Yin Tse, Kai Man Fung, William Mok
OPUS HONG KONG, the first residential project in Asia by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, is based on a unique design using unconventional materials. Although the design is very innovative, it also created numerous construction challenges. The building envelope is highly complex, both spatially and geometrically, with external inclined steel columns, a precast facade, shingle glass wall, stone cladding, glass balustrade and curved glass sliding doors. To overcome these challenges, the project team employed Building Information Management (BIM) extensively throughout the construction period to coordinate all works by sub-contractors. As a result, the team was able to bring the design to life seamlessly and in a sustainable, timely and cost-efficient manner.
E&M T&C Works with the aid of BIM
Team members: Victor Tse, Lau Kwok Cheong
Typically, a full Building Information Management (BIM) model is developed for coordination and clash analysis throughout the construction process. On the CX Cargo terminal project at Chek Lap Kok International Airport, the Gammon E&M team joined the Innovation team to develop a simplified BIM-based testing and commissioning system for the commissioning works. The BIM model catered only for major equipment and converted all the traditional T&C forms into an electronic format. By doing so, an electronic format T&C form is now integrated into the object inside the model. The team can rotate the model, walk through it, and quickly locate any equipment to be tested. What’s more, this method allows T&C works to be done electronically on site and manage all information flows more efficiently.

Development and Application of Recycled Aggregate Concrete
Team members: Vincent Lo, KC Ng, TK Cheung, Nathan Lei, Walter Lee, Ka Lok Wong
In 2011, Gammon commenced the Zero Carbon Building project initiated by the Construction Industry Council to showcase low-carbon design and technologies. Under the contract, Gammon was required to use recycled aggregates in concrete production. Recycled coarse aggregates (material produced by crushing old concrete), however, were not available in the local market. The solution proposed by the project team and the Concrete Technology Department allowed an alternative source to be used, with a concrete reclaimer system that extracts coarse aggregates from residue concrete waste returned from site. Around 20% of the normal coarse aggregates in the concrete mixes are substituted by the recycled aggregates processed from the reclaimer. This cost-effective and environmentally-friendly method not only increases the recycle content in concrete to meet BEAM Plus requirements but also reduces the burden on public fill.
Category Winners
In addition to our main winners, we also award ideas that have a smaller but significant impact. These Category Prizes are an opportunity for everyone at Gammon, to contribute ideas that make a difference on our business and to receive recognition for their innovative thinking.
