92 Years of Pride and Excellence Go Gophers!

February 1, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The beginning of the second semester gives students and teachers a mid-year opportunity to reflect, reset and refresh in the classroom. Your child has received a new schedule and likely has some new teachers and new classes. Please take some time to review the syllabi sent home by the teachers and to talk with your child about academic goals and expectations for the second semester.

Glen Burnie will again host Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday, February 22. You should receive email invitations from your child’s teachers to make a conference appointment using Sign Up Genius. Links to each teacher’s conference schedule will also be posted on the school website in early February. In addition to conference appointments, we will hold Open House conferences between 12:00 and 2:30 pm. We will hold several information sessions for parents during the Open House time, including a workshop for parents of Seniors.

There are several events for families this month. We will host the Advanced Placement (AP) and College Information Night on Thursday, February 4th in the auditorium. On February 9th at 7:00 pm, GBHS will host a Social Media Awareness event open to all families in the Glen Burnie feeder system. Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams as well as several representatives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department will present on internet and social media safety for youth.

This month, school counselors will begin meeting with your child during the English classes to make course selections for the 2016-17 academic year. We encourage you to discuss classes with your child and to help us encourage them to choose classes that will sustain their interest and keep them on a path toward achieving their college and career goals.

We appreciate your patience and support during the most recent snowstorm. Now that we are back on a regular schedule, we ask for your support in getting your child to school on time, every day. Please remember to send absence notes if your child misses school.

We look forward to a terrific second semester. As always, please contact school staff if you have any concerns regarding your child’s education.

CHECKING INTO GBHS

“The safety of all students and sta in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our school is u lizing a system for checking in all visitors. The system is called V So by RaptorWare. When you visit our school for the rst me, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a sta person in the school lobby. This card will be scanned and the following

informa on will be collected: Your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This informa on will be u lized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your informa on against sexual o ender databases throughout the country. If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the school to scan your ID, you will not be allowed access to the school. The only alterna ve will be to allow the school to see your ID, verify your rst name, last name, and date of birth to be entered into the system manually. However, this method does not store the informa on and you must do this each me you visit the school. If you do have your ID scanned, you will only be asked to show your ID on future visits and your name will be selected from an exis ng list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the o ce upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the building. You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming to school to pick up your child. The informa on collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students safe is appreciated.”
