serving Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet & Eastham on Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We are proud of the successes HOW has experienced serving women with chronic, life threatening or disabling health conditions, and providing information, referral and advoca-

cy for all community members on the Outer Cape in the past year.

Here are some of our accomplished in 2016:

More than 230 women, including 21 new clients, received help navigating challenges

of a new serious diagnosis or managing everyday life with a long-lasting illness;

Provided 259 rides to 62 individuals for medical appointments, tests, treatments or other services either locally by volunteers or to Boston using the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority daily hospital van or Cape Air flights between Provincetown and

Boston; and

Helped 131 individuals who were having trouble making ends meet with expenses that most of us take for granted like medical or pharmacy co-pays, specialized food supplements or other therapies, and household expenses like heating, electricity and

phone bills with monthly financial assistance.

Throughout the year, the women we served expressed their gratitude for HOW’s pres-ence in the community. “Just knowing HOW is there, makes my life better,” one women

said.

That is our mission: to provide direct services that improve wellbeing and create more

manageable lives for women with serious health conditions.

We are most grateful to the many individuals, businesses and other organizations whose support makes HOW’s work possible. We thank the members of the HOW Board of Di-rectors for their dedication to our mission, the volunteers eager to help make a medical trip a little easier, other volunteers giving their time to HOW committees and events, and our Client Advocate/Office Administrator, Donna Szeker, who is on the front line support-

ing our clients in every way possible.

Looking forward, we believe that there are more women in need of HOW’s services throughout our four-town region and there may be other ways that HOW can help. So, we will continue to reach out to increase awareness of HOW and to look for new approaches

to serve our community.

Client Services

All HOW clients are eligible for non-financial services which include:

Support groups and/or special workshops;

Social services advocacy and referrals;

Transportation to medical and social service appointments and assis-

tance with errands (i.e. grocery shopping, banking, etc.);

Assistance in accessing and applying for benefit programs.

Financial assistance is available to low-income clients in the form of month-

ly stipends that may be used for medical, mental health, and dental services,

alternative or complementary therapies, prescription medication and other ser-

vices related to clients’ health and well-being. Financial assistance may also be

used for utilities such as heat, phone, and electricity.

Support Groups

HOW occasionally hosts a weekly support group exploring topics for coping with chronic illness or cancer.

Helping Our Women (HOW) was formed in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1992 as a response to the lack of services available to women with chronic and life threatening illness. In 1993, HOW opened a resource and referral center, acquired non-profit 501(c)3 status and incorporated. HOW’s original focus was serving women with cancer, but in 1994, was expanded to include all women diagnosed with chronic and life threatening illness.

HOW was an all volunteer organization until August, 1993, when HOW be-gan to staff the office on a part-time basis. This position became full time in January 1997. HOW now has a full-time Executive Director and a full-time Office Administrator/Client Advocate. These two paid positions combined with a corps of volunteers work together to achieve the following goals:

Provide direct services to women with chronic, life threatening and/or

disabling illness that assist in creating a more manageable life style;

Provide clients and community members with referrals and advocacy

that improves access to health care, social services, and benefit pro-grams;

Develop and implement programs that empower and educate women on

issues related to health care and well-being and that are inclusive of diverse needs.

HOW also has an open door policy to provide referrals, advocacy and benefit assistance to all community members regardless of gender and identification.
