    The title of this book, Teaching Outside the Box, is not meant to imply that

    I can suggest a new and different way to teach. Much better minds than

    mine have tackled that question. I mean to suggest that we must step

    outside our own boxes, our own comfort zones, our own familiar territories

    in order to meet our students halfway. We must be willing to make mistakes

    -- and learn from them, just as we want our students to do.

    I extend my most sincere appreciation to you for the important work you

    do -- preparing the next generation of learners and leaders. Your work is

    important. You are important. And on those days when it feels as though

    nobody appreciates how hard you work, remember that I appreciate you.

    Your students appreciate you, too, although that may not be evident right

    now. Many students will eventually realize the gifts you have given them

    -- long after they have left your classroom.

    PrefaceSa-wat-dee to my fellow teachers in Thailand!

    Since the first edition of this book was published, I have been receiving

    email messages from teachers around the world asking my advice about

    the challenges they face in their classrooms. Those teachers also share

    with me their hopes, dreams, fears, frustrations and the incomparable

    moments of joy that every teacher experiences. Its those moments of joy,

    even if they are rare, that keep us in our classrooms in spite of the many

    frustrating demands of modern teaching. But the most important aspect

    of those many emails is the recognition that good teaching is universal.

    It doesnt matter what language we speak, how talented or remedial our

    students, how much (or how little) money and respect we receive for doing

    our jobs -- the thing that separates the successful from the unsuccessful

    teachers is our connection with students.

    There is no perfect way to teach. Each one of us has different talents and

    strengths. So we must decide how best to use our talents to challenge

    and nurture our students. Effective teachers understand that in order to

    teach well, we must know their students. Not just their names and their

    academic abilities, but what is in those young hearts -- the hopes for the

    future, the challenges and fears students face every day, and the dreams

    and desires that motivate them to succeed in school and in life. When we

    know who students are, as human beings, we can figure out how to reach

    them and teach them.
