as we go to print, i have had the great pleasure of swearing in the nine councillors who will take our city forward over the next four years.

We now have three councillors representing each of the three new wards, gateway, lake and canal, instead of seven single councillor wards.

it’s been an absolute delight meeting the new councillors and getting to know them. they are all hugely enthusiastic about starting work on the tasks ahead.

one of their first jobs is working on the council plan to set out their vision for port phillip from now until 2021. We’ll be sharing more information and look forward to hearing your thoughts next year as the plan progresses.

acland plaza is a new community space that’s ideal for busking, displays, community events or simply sitting around enjoying the passing parade.

created as part of a streetscape upgrade and new tram terminus, acland plaza will be a space for year-round activities and events.

to kick-start the 12 month program, council invited applications for Vibrant acland seed grants in november (applications closed on friday 25 november). these grants encouraged activities in and around acland plaza, including acland street between barkly and carlisle streets, monarch lane, shakespeare grove, and blessington, belford, irwell, and albert streets.

council is excited about acland plaza and precinct hosting a variety of free, diverse and inclusive events including small festivals, pop-ups, public classes, and recreational and creative activities. if you’ve got an idea, contact the council to see how you can make it a reality.

ferrars street school set for 2018With the foundations of the new primary school in ferrars street now in place, Victoria’s first vertical government school will open in just over 12 months.

Designed for 525 students, the five-storey building in fishermans bend’s montague precinct has been designed to maximise space and provide co-located community services.

the school principal will be appointed in early 2017 and student enrolments for the 2018 school year will open in mid-2017. the Department of education and training has released enrolment maps for the new school.

the roof of the st Kilda town hall is now home to a 172 kW solar panel system that will save council about $44,000 a year on electricity and supply costs. With a minimum lifespan of 25 years it will enable council to annually avoid

toward zero progress council has launched its 2015/16 toward zero annual report, which shows how council is tracking to reach its environmental targets by 2020.

Key milestones for 2015/16 include mounting a solar panel system on st Kilda town hall, installing 330 new energy efficient streetlights, and creating 2.5 km of on-road bike lanes and 21 new on-street car share bays. council is preparing a toward zero community action plan to focus on toward zero community targets, with consultation in 2017.

centenary reserve in port melbourne is looking fresh after an upgrade created new spaces for all ages and abilities.

shaped by community feedback, centenary reserve now includes new play equipment, garden beds, grassed areas, picnic space, bbQ, a community garden and mural artwork.

applications can now be submitted via the online services portal on our website, or in digital format via usb at the planning and building counter at the st Kilda town hall. West St Kilda resident Catalina fell in love with her

rescue dog Anise after viewing her on the VicDRG website.

‘It was love at first sight,’ Catalina said. Already the

to go around and dreamed about a rescue dog.

‘After we applied for adoption, we met Anise at her foster

home. Everyone got along well, so now we have her at home

there are many ways to get involved. young people between 15 and 25 meet on sunday afternoons at the pier as part of the re-generation youth project.
