We are enroute byfloatplane (never

mind that the pilot isbarefoot) to a remote desti-nation in the South Pacificcalled Turtle Island, part ofthe Yasawa Group in theRepublic of Fiji. A string ofancient volcanic lagoonsand jagged islands, mostlyuninhabited, passes below.Born of violent earthlyeruptions, they are now thepeaceful paradise home ofowner Richard Evanson.

Richard acquired theisland in 1972 as a personal hideaway.

Some years later heand his Fijian neighborsbegan to extend their hos-pitality to guests seekingan enchanting respitefrom their usual cares.

Romantic, intimate, comfortable and friendlyalmost beyond belief,Turtle Island is a worldentirely beyond time andobligations. For adven-turous island wandererslooking for a private paradise, this is it.

Guests find open-air dining to be as

much fun as it is deliciousand varied. Lantern-litdinner parties are lively,as worldly problemsseem to disappear in thejoyous gatherings of ourguests. For a romanticevening, try a seasidemoonlight dinner or ameal by lantern light on afloating dock.

You’ll feast on fresh-ly caught yellowfin tuna, lobster, crab, succulentAustralian beef, nativefruits, and sweet island-grown vegetables pickedjust that afternoon fromour organic vegetablegarden. Maybe grilledlobster with lemon grassor pork fillet with honey, ginger and pineapple, followed by jasminecrème brûlée with mintsorbet. Fine French,Italian, Australian, NewZealand, and UnitedStates wines and cham-pagnes are poured gener-ously throughout theevening.

The Fijian’s vib-rant living culture

is an integral part of lifeon Turtle Island.

Fijians are taughtfrom an early age thatfamily and friends arethe most importantthings in life. The Islandhas embraced only theessentials of moderntechnology so as not toimpact on culturalauthenticity.

From this warm andancient culture comes anew sense of communityand a nurturing, teach-ing, fun-loving staff witha great South Pacificsense of humor. You’llfind them eager to sharetheir musical heritageand their ceremonies, toexplain the sea life andreefs, to demonstratemedicinal uses of treesand plants found in theforest, teach you to wind-surf or take you fishing. They will spoil you withtheir hospitality or, if youprefer, leave you to savoryour solitude.

Though rich inculture, Turtle

and the surroundingislands are essentiallyundeveloped. There areno luxury high-rises ortennis courts. No air-fields or shopping malls. No televisions or bill-boards. Just unspoilednatural beauty and thegentle rhythm of thetides.

After a few days, most guests realize thereal pleasures here gobeyond what the eye can see. You’ll easily surrender to the leisurelyflow of our friendly, sun-filled Fijian days. Atday’s end, many guestsenjoy sitting under thebanyan tree, sharing“kava” (the Fijian cere-monial drink) andsinging with the otherguests and the staff.

Turtle Island hasbeen referred to

as paradise many timesover and what betterplace to celebrate lovethan paradise?

Turtle Island’s seclud-ed, romantic, tropicalenvironment is ideal fora wedding or renewal ofmarriage vows.

For a true Fijian cul-tural event, the brideand groom may chooseto dress in traditionalFijian wedding attire.

A Turtle GrandWedding begins withthe bride nestled on aflower-decked billi billi, escorted down the calmblue waters of the BlueLagoon by traditionallydressed warriors. Thegroom and ministerwait on a powder whitesand beach, while thetrumpeting of a conchshell and the roll of thelali drums announceher arrival.

Every Turtle Islandwedding is a special andunique ceremony indi-vidually planned foreach couple.

Then forever my heart would sing in raptureMaba na rosi damu.

“Today Turtle Island is covered in a thick forest of mahogany, casuarinas, eucalyptus, rain trees, fruit trees, hibiscus and palms, and theresort continues to plant 20,000 trees each year, as well as supply neighboring islands with trees for planting. Environmental audits– the only ones in the world conducted for purposes of tourism – are commissioned by the resort every five years to assess the economical, social and cultural impact the resort has on life in the region.” TRAVEL & LIVING MAGAZINE, AUSTRALIA, 2006

Because of theenv i ronmenta l

fragility of the island and Richard Evanson’scommitment to sustain-ability, Turtle’s accessand use will always be limited to only fourteencouples. Arrangementsare in place to ensurepreservation of theisland’s wildlife andnatural habitats, and the integrity of Fijianculture.

Through an inten-sive reforestation pro-gram over 500,000 trees, including over 100,000mahogany, have beenplanted on the island inthe last thirty years. Thetrees encourage ecologi-cal diversity, re-establishindigenous forests, pre-vent soil erosion, createwindbreaks and add tothe natural beauty.

Turtle’s three-acreorganic garden providesthe island with freshfruits and vegetables, herbs and spices.

E n v i r o n m e n t a laudits, conducted in1994, 1999 and 2005 toassist the island with itsenvironmental programs,concluded that “TurtleIsland is a precious giftof nature and somethingto be treasured andprotected….”

EDUCATION

Richard Evanson identified many years agothat the retention rate between primary andsecondary schools in Fiji was as low as 20%.Poverty continued from one generation tothe next due to lack of proper schooling. Hesaw a need to educate the future leaders ofhis community and in 2002 started TheEvanson Learning Center on Turtle Island. The school is providing unprecedentedaccess to a world-class education for theyoung people in the area.

COMMUNITY RESORT PROJECTS

Richard Evanson has assisted his communityin building small, backpacker resortsthrough interest-free loans to local villagersof the Nacula and Naisisili villages. His engi-neering skills constantly at use, he has beeninstrumental in the design of the resort’sbures, and his business sense has guided thelocal owners in marketing and managingtheir resorts. The project has brought successto the resort owners who have provided over150 jobs to the area.

“It is clear that Turtle holds an important place in the heartsof those who live and work there…Richard Evanson’sinvaluable humanitarian and environmental contributions toTurtle Island and the surrounding islands will be remem-bered long after he is gone. He has created a successfultourism model that could be implemented worldwide, onethat benefits the environment and people of isolated destina-tions while pampering guests in five star surrounds andenriching their cultural experience.”

TRAVEL & LIVING MAGAZINE, AUSTRALIA, AUTUMN 2006

C o l u m b i aPictures, in look-

ing for a location toshoot “The BlueLagoon,” surveyed athousand possible sitesbefore deciding to filmthe movie entirely onTurtle Island. Columbiafelt that Turtle closelyresembled the beautiful, mythical island de-scribed in the 1906novel on which themovie was based. Themovie, starring BrookeShields, was completedin 1980. The original1949 version, starringJean Simmons, was alsofilmed here.
