Background
PCSIR laboratories Complex Peshawar on request of Biyar Local Support Organization (BLSO)
Booni, Chitral conducted three days training workshop on “Techniques in Value Addition of fruits
and vegetables” from 23-25 November 2017. Dr. Shehzad Alam, Chairman Pakistan Council of
Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology Islamabad, personally graced this
occasion as a Chief Guest in concluding ceremony on 25th November 2017. Also the Chairman PCSIR
held meetings with the management of AKRSP during this visit.
The dignitaries, members of local community (male & female) pointed out their important
issues pertaining to fruits vegetables losses, clean and safe drinking water, training needs in fruits
vegetables processing etc. The worthy Chairman PCSIR ensured that PCSIR will provide technical
assistance to address these issues on war footing. The Chairman PCSIR announced that PCSIR will
provide Ceramic water filters, Solar dehydrator for fruits/vegetables as well as trainings in the area
of fruit processing and preservation for the local community as per their requirements.
Summary
To keep a promise, the Chairman PCSIR issued directives to the Director General PCSIR
laboratories Complex, Peshawar for making arrangements in the first week of May 2018 to hand
over the above cited items prepared by scientists/engineers of PCSIR Peshawar to the local
community, as well as a training workshop on “Techniques in Value Addition of fruits and
vegetables” at Booni Chitral.
PCSIR Peshawar after consultation with the management of Agha Khan Rural Support
Programme (AKRSP) Chitral & Biyar Local Support Organization (BLSO) Booni, arranged a three days
training workshop in the field of fruits processing & preservation at Booni on 3-5 May 2018. The
chairman PCSIR being the chief guest, awarded certificates to the participants of training; distributed
Ceramic water filters among the needy local community from different affected villages and handed
over solar dehydrator to BLSO for further utilization by the local community.
The Chairman PCSIR also held meeting with Qurambara and shandoor area development
Organization (QASADO) Mastuj and Laspur Area Rural Support Organization (LARSO) Laspur villay on
their request made through AKRSP Chitral on 5th and 6th May 2018 respectively.

The training team was headed by Mr. Shams Ur Rehman Head Food Technology Center and comprised of the following officials.

Training Contents:
Delivered theoretical lecture during the training on fruit processing and preservation techniques followed by practical demonstration to prepare different products from fruits and vegetables. The products prepared are as under:-
1. Apple Jam 2. Citrus Jam 3. Mulberry
Jam 4. Apple
Squash 5. Citrus
Squash 6. Red Syrup
7. Apple Chips 8. Dehydrated Apple 9. Apple Chutney 10. Mixed Vegetables pickle
11. Different Dehydrated Vegetables like onion, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, garlic, bitter gourd, carrot etc
49 participants from different areas of upper Chitral attended the training.

The Chairman PCSIR, Dr. Shahzad Alam, arrived to Chitral on 4th May 2018 in evening
as per schedule. The Chairman was accompanied by Member Science Mr. Faridullah Khan
Khattak, Director General PCSIR Labs. Complex Peshawar, Eng. Irfan Ahmad Rabbani and
Director Marketing Mr. Tanveer Ahmad Khan.
BRIEFING & DISCUSSION SESSION HELD WITH AKRSP AT CHITRAL
The management of AKRSP headed by Regional Programme manager Mr. Sardar Ayub
arranged an informal briefing and discussion session ON 4TH May 2018. Besides AKRSP’s past
achievements the team thoroughly discussed with the Chairman PCSIR the new emerging
issues such as food insecurities in the remote valleys, stunting growth among children,
technological innovations and replication. After having a thorough discussion the following
key decisions were made by the Chairman PCSIR.
1. Vegetable dehydration plant is available at
PCSIR Peshawar with a capacity of
dehydration of 4 tones in a day; therefore,
PCSIR will be happy if AKRSP will utilize the
facility for vegetable dehydration/drying.
PCSIR Team will facilitate the whole process
of drying & packing free of cost.
2. PSCIR will provide one tone coal briquette
for the communities of Broghil valley and
issued orders telephonically to the
concerned unit of PCSIR to dispatch the
same to AKRSP Chitral by tomorrow.
3. PSCIR will provide 1,000 packets of energized
cookies for Broghil valley and issued orders
telephonically to the Director General Lahore
Laboratories to start working on it.
4. To overcome iron & other deficiencies PCSIR
will also provide micro nutrients & mixer
machine to flour mill in Chitral.
5. PCSIR will facilitate AKRSP in provision of
different Technical and Vocational Education
and Training TVET skill for the youth of
Chitral both gender by providing PCSIR
facilities all over Pakistan.

Certificate Distribution & Handing over of Ceramic water filters and
Solar dehydrator unit to BLSO, Booni Chitral
On the next day 5th May 2018, the Chairman PCSIR Dr. Shehzad Alam being the chief guest along with team went to BLSO (Beyar Local Support Organization) Booni and attended the closing ceremony of three days training on fruit processing. The ceremony was attended by a large number of community representatives including government officials, elected representatives & community activist from different areas of upper Chitral.

Where 49 participants from different areas of upper Chitral attended the training. The ceremony was also attended by local community from different villages having supply of clean water to collect the ceramic water filters. Ceramic water filters were distributed among fifty (50) house hold representatives for use at their homes. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sardar ayub Regional Programme Manager AKRSP Chitral appreciated the commitment of PCSIR and specifically Dr. Shehzad Alam Chairman PCSIR, who visited Chitral twice to fulfill his commitments and highlighted AKRSP’s institutional development mandate and emphasized on the importance of Village/Women Organization’s in the area that have federated in to Local Support organizations and applauded the role of BLSO in the area. Chairman PCSIR also highlighted the importance of community participation in different schemes and said that CPEC on one hand is blessing for the area but at the same time is great threat for fragile environment of Chitral. The skills of the community’s needs to be enhanced to get maximum benefit from CPEC initiatives. The Chairman PCSIR offered PCSIR services and facilities available all over Pakistan and said that PCSIR will be happy to facilitate Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for the communities of Chitral.

The chairman PCSIR said that training should not be taken
as granted for the sake of training rather we have to change
our attitude and translate the skill in to business.
At the end of the ceremony the Chairman PCSIR handed
over 50 portable water filtration pots and a modern solar
dehydration unit to BLSO and distributed certificate among
the participants.
Key decisions are as follows:-
1. BLSO will develop a business model for fruit
processing and submit business plan for this specific
activity
2. PCSIR will link the products with national market &
also provide space as an outlet in Islamabad
3. PCSIR will train 10 Master Trainers from Biyar valley
4. PCSIR will facilitate certification and branding
5. PCSIR will provide two solar pump for installation
in Parwak
6. PCSIR has already signed MoU with Serena Hotel for
the development of apiculture sector in Gilgit-
Baltistan, therefore, will also work with the
communities in this sector
7. PCSIR will also extend their activities in other part
of Chitral (as demanded by the communities of
different areas)
8. PCSIR is planning to initiate R&D activities in
Medicinal & aromatic plant (MAP) sector & will also
extend these activities in Chitral
9. PCSIR will facilitate Technical and Vocational
Education and Training TVET sector trainings for
Chitral region

Meeting with Qarumbar & Shandoor Area Development Organization QASADO Mastuj On the same day 5
th May 2018, the team held meeting
with QASADO (Qarumbar & Shandoor Area Development Organization) board and discussed the potential for intervention in the area. The QASADO Management and members attended the meeting were:-

Mr. Saadat Jan Chairman QASADO explained the role & achievements of QASADO with specific focus to the need of scaling up of already initiated activities in fruit processing sector. Dr. Shehzad Alam the Chairman PSCIR admired the role of community participation in the area and discussed the possibility of scaling up of the activities in fruit dehydration sector. As a way forward following action points were agreed:- QASADO will mobilize community and enroll 100 participants for fruit processing training & share the list with PCSIR through AKRSP
PCSIR will start fruit processing trainings simultaneously in two villages by June 22, 2018
Products will linked with national market through private sector engagement
Advance courses (Three month) in different trades (electrician, Plumber, marble mosaic, welding) are available with PCSIR Peshawar, therefore, QASADO will select 10–15 participants for each trades and share the list with PCSIR through AKRSP. PCSIR will arrange food & accommodation for participants.
PCSIR will also look in to the possibility of provision of solar dehydration plants to QASADO

Naheed Bano Key points discussed & decisions taken are as follow:-
For value addition in Sea buckthorn (magic plant), LARSO will identify 10 participants from Laspur valley and sent to PCSIR Skardu as early as possible. They will be trained as a Mater Trainers and all cost (accommodation & food) will be borne by PCSIR except travelling.
LARSO will identify 10 participants for basic trainings in trades like electrician, plumber, electric welding, masonry, building painting repair & maintenance of electric appliance and share the list with AKRSP for further training by PCSIR.
PCSIR will mobilize resources (human, material & equipments) and all basic trainings will be organized at community level in Laspur valley after recommendation by AKRSP.
PCSIR will also facilitate basic fruit processing training in Laspur valley after Eid.
LARSO will identify & select 2-3 participants in consultation with AKRSP for six month auto mechanic training that will be held in Peshawar.
