PCRCFUNDRAISINGGUIDE

A future for men and their familieswww.pcr.org.uk

As CEO of PCRC, I thought it would be useful to take the time to tell you what your fundraising really means. The charity you have decided to support – PCRC – is the only national charity concentrating solely on research into treatments for prostate cancer. We want to see a reduction in the number of people dying from the disease and an improved quality of life for those living with it.

We are a small, but vital, funder of leading scientists with innovative ideas but who lack the necessary investment to research potentially ground-breaking treatments. With your support, we will accept and assess only the very best research proposals. We will support and nourish them. We will provide selected scientists with the space, fl exibility and environment to transform their ideas into successful therapies.

But we can’t advance this essential research without you. Your fundraising allows us to open up new scientifi c projects and provide our scientists with the resources to fi nd new treatments more effectively and effi ciently.

Good luck with your fundraising and thank you very much for joining the team that will bring us closer to fi nding new treatments for prostate cancer.

Louise Milne's Story

DID YOU KNOW?Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer worldwide, with 45,000 diagnoses per year.

Immunotherapy

The team led by Dr Christine Galustian is working to harness the immune system’s innate ability to fi ght cancer. They are working on an innovative new form of immunotherapy that is affordable and non-invasive. Additionally, it only requires one injection and its effects are permanent. Because immunotherapy harnesses the immune system, it would only have minimal side effects.

Prostate cancer stem cells

Utilising existing pharmaceuticals, this project repurposes off-the-shelf drugs to treat prostate cancer. Stem cells drive the growth and spread of prostate cancer. Although scientists have known about cancer stem cells for over a decade, prostate cancer stem cells are diffi cult to identify and remain a novel target for therapies. Dr Aamir Ahmed’s research focuses on a specifi c set of stem cell signalling mechanisms that can accelerate the spread of prostate cancer cells.

Spread of prostate cancer

This project explores potential new therapies by conducting world-fi rst research into cell division. It is led by Magali Williamson, who is decoding the deadly spread of prostate cancer. She discovered that an overexpression or mutation of a protein called PlexinB1 is common in cases of advanced prostate cancer. By doing so, Dr Williamson identifi ed a new therapeutic target. She is now investigating treatments for prostate cancer based around stopping PlexinB1. This research has huge potential since it could contain early prostate cancer within the prostate and stop it spreading further.

OUR RESEARCH AND IMPACT Prostate cancer is curable when it is localised within the prostate. It becomesincurable and dangerous after it has become advanced by spreading around the body.Every hour in the UK, a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Current treatments for advanced prostate cancer are inadequate, often ineffective long term, and with debilitating side effects such as impotence and incontinence. Finding more effective therapies for advanced prostate cancer is an economic scientifi c and human imperative.

Our visionA future without prostate cancer.

Our challengeProstate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK

• 80% of men have cancer cells in their prostate by the age of 80

• 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime

• There are 45,000 diagnoses per year

• There are 12,000 deaths per year

• 40% of men diagnosed have life-threatening prostate cancer

Our missionTo increase survival rates, reduce morbidity and improve the quality of life for men with prostate cancer.

We have discovered:1. One of the most frequent genetic changes in prostate cancer, giving us a new target for therapy

2. A protein that is amplifi ed on prostate cancer cells, making them respond to drugs that are already in clinical use

3. A method of boosting the immune system that kills prostate cancer in model systems

LOUISE MILNE’S STORYAll people are blessed by something in their lives; I was blessed with my family. Yet on September 9th, 2016, it felt as though this was drifting away from me as my dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. Our lives had changed forever and the moments that followed this diagnosis felt like a giant black hole of unanswered questions and emotions, making it diffi cult to fi nd clarity or the strength to get through each day. However, with the support of not just each other but our extended family, friends and medical professionals, we became strong enough to start fi ghting back.

My boyfriend signed us up for the Snowdon 500 Challenge, as my Christmas present would you believe! But it is the best present I have ever received. So in May 2017 we climbed Mount Snowdon and participated in a great day organised by the team at Prostate Cancer Research Centre; the energy on the day and the number of people in attendance made me realise how many of us are affected by this disease. So whilst walking up the mountain I used my time wisely and mentally planned my next fundraising challenge: a charity gala dinner.

I fundraise for Prostate Cancer Research Centre to ensure that my Dad and everyone else that is affected by this vile disease has the best chance of survival. My dad’s prognosis was said to be 3-5 years; however, due to treatment he has received since September 2016 his cancer has now been labelled as dormant. While it remains incurable it has, for now, gone to sleep and this is all due to the continued effect and successes from the research that is carried out.

Never underestimate the power of sitting in a doctor’s rooms with someone YOU love that is fi ghting cancer and hearing the words “THERE ARE NEW TYPES OF TREATMENT AVAILABLE” or “A NEW COMBINATION OF TREATMENT HAS BEEN DISCOVERED”, and listening to the proven success rates for fi ghting prostate cancer and increasing survival rates.
