Great Eastern Ecology recommends creating a network throughout the Stanley Avenue site that collects, stores, infiltrates, and treats stormwater. Based on the current layout, GEE has identified three design strategies that respond to the site’s constraints, effectively manage stormwater, and provide additional ecological improvements. The three strategies are identified on the plan and briefly outlined below:
1. Vegetated Screen SwalesIn addition to collecting stormwater, these thin, densely vegetated swales will screen views to adjacent properties.
2. Vegetated Parking SwalesLocated along the perimeter of the parking areas on site, these lightly vegetated swales will collect stormwater and direct it to the basins.
3. Vegetated Collection BasinThe largest open areas on the site will function as vegetated wetland basins. These basins will hold stormwater on site allowing it to infiltrate and nurture plant growth.
Conceptual Ecological Design : Stanley Avenue Hydrologic Overview
Vegetated ScreenDense plantings of native wetland tree and shrub species selectively screen views of the adjacent properties.
Stormwater CollectionPrecipitation falling upon the driveways and parking areas is directed into the formalized swale. Base flow outlets and high water overflows direct waters to the large vegetated basins.
HabitatNative tree and shrub species selected for planting provide cover and food sources for bird and insect species.
Stormwater InfiltrationCollected stormwater will percolate through the swale’s soil and gravel layers, recharging groundwater and limiting runoff.
Revelatory DesignActivated during rain events, the stormwater system is designed as a fountain, linking people to natural processes.
ShadePlantings within the swale will cast shade upon the parking and driveway areas, reducing surface temperatures.

Extended DetentionThe vegetated collection basin is the terminus for the stormwater network. Water that does not infiltrate or removed by evapotranspiration is slowly released into the storm sewer.
