In the modern world, when many have come to doubt the Church's teaching on Purgatory, the need for such  prayers has only increased. The Church devotes the month of November to  prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month. The Book of the Dead will be at both entrances of the church beginning November 1, 2010 . Please enter the names of your  beloved dead. We will lift them in prayer at each mass. All Saints Day Mass Vigil Mass: October 31st, 5pm  November 1st, 11:30am All Souls Day Mass  November 2nd: 11:30am, 12:00pm and 12:30pm Question: Where did the title 'Mary, Star of the Sea' come from? This title has been applied to Mary for centuries. One explanation is that when St. Jerome translated the Hebrew word mar , he used the Latin word  stilla. Yam is the He-  brew word for "sea." Thus, maryam (Mary's name) would mean "drop of the sea." Later, the Latin  stilla (drop) was read as stella (star). "Drop of the sea" became "star of the sea."  Ave Maris Stella is a ninth-century Latin hymn honor- ing Mary. Military Council of Catholic Women (MCCW)

Monthly Program The MCCW monthly program will be Thursday, November 3 with our guest speaker Chaplain (COL) Craig Wiley, the installation chaplain for 

Fort Gordon, with an inspiring story of Hope. We will start with Mass at 6:00 pm fol-lowed by dinner. Due to the monthly meeting on Thursday there will be no faith studyon Monday, October 31.

Best Baker Competition All bakers of the parish, get ready for the Second Annual Best Baker Competition! Thecontest will be held on Saturday, November 19 in building 13 in the RE complex. Thecategories will be cakes, pies, and cookies. You must submit your recipe with your entry. All entries have to be logged in by 11:00 am. We also need judges for the compe-tition. Who wants to eat all of these goodies?! Please contact Kim Besel if you want to

 be a judge or need more information on the contest.

Hygiene Items Needed! This year MCCW will support Catholic Social Services as our designated charity. After a very interesting and informative presentation by Sister Janet Roddy, the director, we

have learned that they really need hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap,shampoo, etc. to hand out to homeless and jobless families and individuals in the Au-gusta area. Please help us support those who so desperately need it in our very owncommunity. We will have a box in the back hallway where you can deposit your gifts.Thank you!!
