    Scripture

Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? (Isaiah 55:2a)

Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! (Isaiah 55:1) What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution (Romans 8:35)

Five loaves and two fish are all we have here. They all ate and were satisfied, (Matthew 14:17,20)

    Reflection

What are you most devoted to? What is the focus of your life?

Are you conflicted about the direction your life is taking?

What role does God have in finding the direction for your life?

Have you asked for help? Did you pray about it? Ask for guidance?

Then one day, when he was on his way home, he met a leper on the road. Francis had always feared lepersand was nauseated by even the sight of them. But when he saw this leper, he realized that he had been able topray in the cave because God had drawn near to him for embracing those whom others had rejected and whohe himself had previously found repulsive. And so he jumped off his horse, went over to the leper and not

only gave him money, but embraced him. And when the young Francis turned to leave, he looked back andthere was no one on the road. Francis knew that once again he had embraced Christ; and because he had, hewould continue to be able to hear Christ in prayer.

Q: Why is the Holy Spirit sometimes called the"Paraclete?"A: Literally the Greek word parakletos means "onecalled alongside," particularly one called to help in alegal situation: a defense attorney. A forensic orcourtroom atmosphere can be seen in words like"Advocate" and "Counselor," also used to translate

parakletos. Actually there is a legal tone to some ofwhat Jesus in John says about the Paraclete; yet thepicture is more exactly that of a prosecuting attorney.Jesus is going to die on a crossin the eyes of theworld judged guilty and convicted. Yet after hisdeath, the Paraclete will come and reverse the sen-tence by convicting the world and proving Jesus'innocence (16:8-11). He will show that Jesus did notsin; rather the world sinned by not believing in him.He is the one who is just or righteous, as shown bythe fact that he is not in the grave but with the Fa-

ther. The judgment by his enemies in putting him todeath did not defeat him; ironically it defeated hisgreat adversary, the Satanic Prince of this world.

Sometimes those who are suffering or lonely needto call in someone to console and comfort them. Thisaspect of the Paraclete is caught by the translation"Comforter" or "Consoler". In the context of the Last

Supper Jesus' disciples are sorrowful because he isdeparting; the promise that someone just like Jesus iscoming to take his place is consoling.

Nevertheless, the Jesus of the Last Supper whoprepares his disciples for the coming of the Spirit isalso realistic. The world will hate the disciples whohave received the Spirit of Truth (15:18~9) that theworld cannot accept because it neither sees nor rec-

    ognizes that Spirit (14:17).

A Study on the Book of Deuteronomy.

The Israelites are now standing at the threshold. The much longed for Promised Land that had beenpledged to Abraham more than 400 years earlier, the land flowing with milk and honey, lay just a fewmiles away. The Israelites were camped in the land of the Moabites, overlooking Jericho and the plainof Jordan, on the eastern border of Canaan.

The Promised Land symbolized freedom, prosperity and rest; all of which the Israelites had not experi-

enced up to this point. Instead, the long, tedious journey began many years before at Mt. Sinai, abouttwo years after their deliverance from Egypt. It should have only taken the Israelites 11 days to reachthe Promised Land, but it took nearly 40 years. The reasons for the delay were the same reasons thaturged Moses to lay out the commandments of God once again, as is narrated in the book of Deuteron-omy.

The last 40 years consisted of bitter complaining and acts of outrageous disobedience by the Israelites. So much so, that the first generation died in the wilderness as a consequence for their unbelief. Theonly ones who remained from the first generation were Moses, Joshua and Caleb. The Israelites were ahard-hearted people, but God in His mercy spared their lives and kept His promise to bring them to thenew land. Despite Moses' inability to enter the Promised Land because of his own disobedience, anddespite how frequently the actions of the Israelites made him mad, Moses remained faithful to God andto His people to the very end.

The book of Deuteronomy is a collection of farewell addresses that Moses made to the Israelites, which included a review of their history since the exodus from Egypt, a retelling of the Law, and afinal call to obedience. These were not just a review of the requirements of the law for the sake ofrepetition, but rather a final effort to keep the ways of God before them.

Moses knew that his time on earth was running out. In fact, Deuteronomy closes with the death ofMoses. He knew that the Israelites were going to face many new challenges on the other side of theJordan. The temptations that had plagued them in the wilderness were going to be exponentiallygreater in Canaan. There were new idols, new enemies and new abominations to the ways of Godawaiting them, and Moses wanted to spare the Israelites from complete destruction. He wanted them toive, succeed and prosper.

What is most beautiful about the book of Deuteronomy is the one central verse that continues the redthread, the renewed promise of the future Messiah: "I will raise up for them a Prophet like you fromamong their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I com-

    mand Him." (Deut. 18:18)

The Israelites were like sheep without a shepherd. Even under the leadership of Moses they stumbled. But a day was coming when another Prophet would arise; one who would share the same intimacywith the Father that Moses had. That Prophet would not only speak for God, but He Himself wouldbecome the bridge to God by way of the cross.
